Icelandic naming committee: Yes to Luis and no to Pírati

Icelandic naming committee: Yes to Luis and no to Pírati | Name News | Scoop.it
The Icelandic Naming Committee have issued a new ruling for name applications.

The names Luis and Dóróthea are allowed but the middle name Sjafnar is not accepted as it is not conjugated according to Icelandic grammar rules.

Last month, the name Pírati (Pirate) was found unacceptable as the name does not derive from the Icelandic language.  The name Bambus (bamboo) however complies to grammatical rules.

If you want a name that deviates from that list, you have to send an application to the Icelandic Naming Committee, whose three members will decide whether or not yo
Clare's insight:

Think you've heard all there is to hear about Icelandic name laws? Think again. I especially enjoyed the story of Jón Gnarr, who after many years of trying to prod the law, went to Texas to legally change his name. Now he advises parents on how to get around the law, for example by spending 48 hours in Denmark.
