Just for fun, I thought I'd check how the top 50 Polish names are doing in England and Wales. Their 2013 ranks are in brackets. The usual caveats about ranks versus raw numbers apply. As I was checking, various data-sorting possibilities occurred to me, like ranking the names in order of how much their usage/rank has increased since Poland and other central and eastern European countries joined the EU, making for easier migration to the UK. For many of the names here, looking at the graphics on http://names.darkgreener.com, the rise has, unsurprisingly, been dramatic. Several, including Jakub and Julia, rose steeply but are now on a gradual downwards trend.

The fact that Muhammad is even in the discussion of top names is remarkable, given that the Muslim community represents only one in ten births in the U.K. In centuries past, the names John and Mary alone would have dwarfed that entire Muslim baby population. But John and Mary no longer crack the top 100 in England. Only one English boy in a thousand is named John. Even the #1 boy's name accounts for only one boy in fifty.

Stunned to read in the comments that Germans think Poppy should be banned as a "Chantalmusname" or something, whatever that is. "Is this just a German thing?" they ponder. Um yeah.

Well spotted, I didn't read that far. A name with Chantalismus is perceived as a bit anglicised/pop culture influenced/"tacky". I suppose Poppy might seem like that to a non-English-speaker (especially as I think flower names aren't much of a thing in Germany) but it does seem bizarre. It's such a pretty, symbolic, inoffensive name!
