This post is Part 1 of a series on implementing username/password authentication for your Mongoose user models. In this first installment, we will discuss how to implement one-way encryption of user passwords with bcrypt, and how to subsequently use the encrypted password for login verification.

A while ago I wrote a post about how to hook up node.js with the MongoHQ database hosting service. I still love MongoHQ, but my mongo wrapper around the node mongodb native driver sucked! I recently switched wereviewutah.com over to use Mongoose and just wanted to share with everyone how easy it is to use Mongoose with MongoHQ.

When my co-founders and I first started on our startup a little over a year ago, we asked other startups about what to database they were using. Nine out of ten people all had the same response: “Just go with Mongo.”

There are plenty of existing messaging systems out there (Redis, AMQP, ØMQ, etc.) but I’ve recently found MongoDB to be a very compelling alternative, especially if you’re already running MongoDB somewhere in your setup.

Working on my pet project I ran into an issue where the data coming for mongo needed to be prepped for client-side view. Traditionally, if it was an RDBMS, we could use a “group by” query.

Have you ever need to wait for several, unrelated asynchronous functions or processes on NodeJS in order to met dependencies of a last request/method/function/etc? I’m really sure you have, and it can be a pain if you do not know how to properly handle it. The worst and common case is having each one of this nested on then previous one.

For the past 3-4 months I’ve been part of a developer team here at e-conomic that’s working full-time on a Node.js and MongoDB solution. We’re primarily developing a REST API that’s used by a web client and a mobile app. Later on, we will make the API publicly available to our partners.

MongoDB provides a simple http interface listing information of interest to administrators. This interface may be accessed at the port with numeric value 1000 more than the configured mongod port; the default port for the http interface is 28017. To access the http interface an administrator may, for example, point a browser to http://localhost:28017 if mongod is running with the default port on the local machine.

This morning I woke up with a lingering thought on my mind that was left over from recent conversations. In the technical community we often get so invested in our work that rather than talk about the simple building blocks that build our success we talk about the huge breakthroughs we make.

Many language drivers include libraries (either native or third party) that help you create schemas. Let’s take a look at one NoSQL database in particular, MongoDB, and a server-side system called Node.js (which uses JavaScript), and work through an example to see how it’s done.

While SQL databases are insanely useful tools, their monopoly of ~15 years is coming to an end. And it was just time: I can't even count the things that were forced into relational databases, but never really fitted them.

MongoDB's query language is good at extracting whole documents or whole elements of a document, but on its own it can't pull specific items from deeply embedded arrays, or calculate relationships between data points, or calculate aggregates.

In this post, I will demonstrate how to build a simple REST API using Node.js with NoSQL database MongoDB. This demo app will be using MongoDB object modeling tool Mongoose to connecting with MongoDB from the Node app. This demo app is a very basic level API app without following any better practices and mainly created this sample demo for demonstrating Node.js and MongoDB using with Mongoose Node package.

Last time we mentioned two fundamental principles while monitoring any object: 1. The monitor should collect as much important information as possible that will allow to accurately evaluate the health state of an object. 2. The monitor should have little to no effect on the activity of the object.

MongoDB Monitoring Service (MMS) is a free cloud-based service provided by 10gen for monitoring MongoDB deployments in real time. MMS features charts, custom dashboards and automated alerting to track performance, utilization and other KPIs. It requires minimal setup and configuration, and within minutes devops and sysadmin teams can manage and optimize MongoDB deployments.
