Collapse of UK energy firms could cost each household extra £120 | Energy bills | The Guardian

Rise would plunge hundreds of thousands of consumers in England, Scotland and Wales into fuel poverty
Graham Watson's insight:

It seems as though the collapse of so many energy firms in the UK is going to significantly increase energy bills for all of us, according to investment bank, Investec.

Indeed, they estimate that the total cost per household of having to support firms such as Bulb UK is going to be around £120. And this comes at a time when inflation is rising, living standards being squeezed and there being little sign of commodity costs falling. As a result, more people are going to be plunged into fuel poverty.

This pandemic is throwing into stark relief a treacherous fact: we depend on employment, both for survival and a sense of self, says psychoanalyst Josh Cohen
Graham Watson's insight:

I just 'scoop' this and put it here - it makes for interesting reading, not particularly economic - but it gives you an insight into the dignity of labour, and why work plays such a central part in determining living standards. It's not just about the income it provides.

Percentage of workers paid by platforms such as Uber and Deliveroo jumps from 6% in 2016 to 15% now
Graham Watson's insight:

This article looks at the changing structure of the UK labour market - noting that the number of workers now in the gig economy has increased from 6% in 2016 to 15% today.

Is this a healthy position to be in? Yes, it may mean that the labour market is more flexible but to what extent are these workers employed in insecure occupations, and likely to struggle to maintain their living standards?

Millions in precarious, low-paid work feel overlooked by the government in its aid package for a nation facing months at home
Graham Watson's insight:

Again, sobering reading in the Observer: this is the reality of life in the gig economy. Can the model survive the coronavirus outbreak? I'm not sure - it makes it abundantly clear how fragile the livelihoods of this group of workers is, and the strains that this might impose upon them, and their families.
