Adding Up The Cost Of Low Literacy Among Adults

Adding Up The Cost Of Low Literacy Among Adults | Magpies and Octopi | Scoop.it

"Low literacy rates for adults can have wide-ranging effects on those around them. They may rely more heavily on government services; their children may not get that extra hand with schoolwork; their families may not get sufficient financial support.

But for the millions of adults with low literacy, the ability to read, write and speak English might offer them the most important opportunity of all: a chance to emerge from the shadows and participate as equals in society."

Mary Reilley Clark's insight:

Great article to share with students--the stories will grab them.

Virginia Woolf on How to Read a Book

Virginia Woolf on How to Read a Book | Magpies and Octopi | Scoop.it

"Do not dictate to your author; try to become him. Be his fellow-worker and accomplice."

Mary Reilley Clark's insight:

"To admit authorities, however heavily furred and gowned, into our libraries and let them tell us how to read, what to read, what value to place upon what we read, is to destroy the spirit of freedom which is the breath of those sanctuaries. Everywhere else we may be bound by laws and conventions — there we have none."
