The most prestigious research grant from the European Research Council for Lionel Briand | #UniversityLuxembourg

The most prestigious research grant from the European Research Council for Lionel Briand | #UniversityLuxembourg | Luxembourg (Europe) | Scoop.it
Professor Lionel Briand, FNR PEARL Chair and Vice Director of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) at the University of Luxembourg, has been awarded an “Advanced Grant” by the European Research Council (ERC) for his research in the field of software reliability and security. He is the first Luxembourg-based researcher to receive an Advanced Grant, the most prestigious of the European Commission grants. Briand will be receiving 2.3 million Euros in funding over the next five years. This funding adds to a series of recent successes at the University of Luxembourg in acquiring research funding, including two ERC Consolidator Grants.

Briand’s research programme “Testing the untestable (TUNE)” focuses on improving testing methods for highly complex, software-intensive systems whose dependable operation is of critical importance. Examples include decision and assistance systems in aircraft and vehicles, information systems in financial institutions, and control systems in power and nuclear plants, where any failure would pose a serious risk. Relying on models of the system and its environment, together with advanced artificial intelligence techniques, Briand’s research tackles the problem of bringing more automation and effectiveness to the testing and verification of such systems, which are inherently difficult to test. The ultimate goal is to increase their dependability (reliability, security, safety) within time and resource constraints.

Uni.Lu Signs Strategic Partnership for Big Data Analytics with CHOICE Technologies | ICT

Uni.Lu Signs Strategic Partnership for Big Data Analytics with CHOICE Technologies | ICT | Luxembourg (Europe) | Scoop.it

The University of Luxembourg’s Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) has announced the signing of a strategic partnership agreement for a long-term collaboration, with CHOICE Technologies, with the intent of researching into new analytical methods in the field of Big Data.

SnT Director, Prof. Dr. Björn Ottersten, expressed his delight and optimism with the project agreement, saying that its global nature, demonstrates the worldwide appreciation for the centre’s expertise in IT applications for industry and the utilities.

CHOICE, headquartered in Luxembourg and with operations in Brazil, Colombia and Turkey, specialises in computer-based systems to detect irregularities in power grids. Brazil, and other developing countries in Latin America, Eastern Europe, Middle East and Asia are undergoing rapid infrastructure expansion. As a result, electric energy suppliers are faced with the problem of non-technical losses in the power draw, due to, for example, electricity theft.

Denis Maciel Maia, CEO of CHOICE, also lauded the agreement, saying it was a decisive factor when choosing Luxembourg as its headquarters and that it will be a huge step forward in developing the necessary next-generation algorithms.

Implanted neurons become part of the brain | Luxembourg (Europe) | Scoop.it

Scientists at the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB) of the University of Luxembourg have grafted neurons reprogrammed from skin cells into the brains of mice for the first time with long-term stability. Six months after implantation, the neurons had become fully functionally integrated into the brain. This successful, because lastingly stable, implantation of neurons raises hope for future therapies that will replace sick neurons with healthy ones in the brains of Parkinson’s disease patients, for example.

The University of Luxembourg has signed an agreement with the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley), often considered to be the best public university in the world.

On collaboration and exchange

This agreement on research collaboration and the exchange of scientists was signed recently by the President of the University of Luxembourg, Professor Rainer Klump, and Chancellor Nicholas B. UC Berkeley and the University of Luxembourg already collaborate in research areas such as biology, computer science, history and law. Both sides wish to widen the scope of this research collaboration to areas such as information and communication technology (ICT), finance, social inequality and European studies.

Moreover, the pair have both recently opened a new campus on a brownfield site and are therefore keen to exchange experience.
