Luxembourg's Ministry of Housing has announced the launch of a new public housing portal: Logement.lu.

The ministry's website www.logement.lu is aimed at all interested parties and those involved in the housing sector in Luxembourg.

Developed by the Government IT Centre (CTIE) in collaboration with the Ministry of Housing and the Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research (LISER), the website is designed to strengthen the visibility of financial aid for tenants and owners. It also explains the steps and procedures to follow in order to benefit from such aid. Many publications from the housing ministry can also be downloaded here.

In 2020, the total government budget allocations for R&D (GBARD) across the EU stood at €100 786 million, equivalent to 0.8% of GDP. This information comes from data on government budget allocations for R&D published by Eurostat today.

In 2020, government budget allocations for R&D at an EU level stood at €225 per person, a 22% increase compared with 2010 (€184 per person). The highest allocations were recorded in Luxembourg (€648 per person), followed at a distance by Denmark (€519) and Germany (€443).

On the other hand, EU countries with the lowest R&D budget allocations per person were Romania (€15 per person), Bulgaria (€21), Hungary (€39) and Latvia (€42).

La pandémie a aggravé les écarts de niveau entre élèves et les risques de décrochage scolaire. Pour lutter contre ce phénomène, Claude Meisch a annoncé que l’obligation scolaire serait étendue de 16 à 18 ans. L’enseignement du coding sera aussi généralisé afin de réduire la fracture digitale.

Les voyageurs ferroviaires pourront bénéficier de wifi gratuit dans presque toutes les gares du Luxembourg à partir de 2022. Plus de la moitié le proposent déjà.

Actuellement, plus de la moitié des gares sont déjà équipées de wifi gratuit. D’ici la fin de l’année, ce chiffre sera de 95%. Il sera aussi proposé dans certains trains, dont la livraison est attendue entre 2023 et 2025.

Studierende, die finanzielle Hilfe für ihr Hochschulstudium beantragen möchten, können das ab sofort über die Handy-Anwendung MyGuichet.lu tun. Das geht aus einer gemeinsamen Pressemitteilung des Ministeriums für Digitalisierung und des Staatlichen Zentrums für Informationstechnologie (CTIE) vom Dienstag hervor. Bei der offiziellen Einführung der App im Juli erklärte Marc Hansen (DP), beigeordneter Minister für Digitalisierung, dass die Anwendung im Laufe der Zeit erweitert werde. Die erste neue Entwicklung in diesem Zusammenhang ist jetzt in der App verfügbar. Der Ausbau werde laut der Mitteilung allerdings in den kommenden Wochen und Monaten noch weiter fortgesetzt.

Luxembourg among the top 3 most attractive cities
Just like in 2020, Luxembourg is 3rd on the list, just after Zürich and Geneva. Other high-ranking European cities include Munich (4th), Vienna (9th), Berlin (15th), Dublin (26th), Amsterdam (30th), Madrid (33rd), Brussels (38th) and London (39th).

Luxembourg ranks 15th for financial criteria (the same place as in 2020). In the lifestyle ranking, it progresses by four places compared to 2020 and is now in 21st place.

Here at SnT, our own Prof. Tegawendé F. Bissyandé has won a prestigious European Research Council (ERC) grant to research new tools that will revolutionise the way software repair — especially the bug response process — is handled. His project, NATURAL, will explore how natural language processing (NLP) technology can be used to automate the bug-response process.

Bissyandé’s ERC grant is a Starting Grant, which supports up-and-coming young researchers with stellar research track records. It provides the NATURAL project with a total of 1.5 million Euros in funding.

In einer parlamentarischen Anfrage weist die Abgeordnete Nathalie Oberweis (Déi Lénk) darauf hin, dass es «noch viele Hindernisse» auf dem Weg zu einer gleichberechtigteren und inklusiveren Gesellschaft gibt.

Wie Gesundheitsministerin Paulette Lenert (LSAP) am Donnerstag erklärte, sei die Einführung eines dritten Geschlechts im Personenstand geplant. Erste Überlegungen diesbezüglich seien abgeschlossen und eine interministerielle Arbeitsgruppe arbeite derzeit an den «Modalitäten zur Einführung des dritten Geschlechts im Melderegister». Die dritte Geschlechtsoption richte sich an «alle, die intersexuell geboren wurden, sowie an alle, die sich nicht mit dem binären Geschlechtssystem identifizieren».

Wir sprechen regelmäßig über Apps, künstliche Intelligenz, Blockchain, aber unser Ehrgeiz ist es, mit allen oder zumindest der großen Mehrheit der Bevölkerung voranzukommen», sagte Marc Hansen (DP), Beigeordneter Minister für Digitalisierung, am Montag bei der Vorstellung der Zusammenarbeit mit der gemeinnützigen Organisation Erwuessebildung. Das Projekt zielt darauf ab, der Bevölkerung Schulungen im digitalen Bereich anzubieten.

Konkret wird Erwuessebildung «Anfang September mit der Ausbildung des Lehrpersonals beginnen», erklärt ihr Präsident Pit Péporté. Die Kosten für die Kurse werden sich im einstelligen Bereich bewegen, Hansen spricht von «symbolischen» Beträgen von «etwa drei Euro pro Stunde». Nicht nur ältere Menschen könnten sich dafür interessieren, so der Minister.

On Wednesday 7 July 2021, France's National Centre for Space Studies (Centre national d'Études spatiales - CNES), the Luxembourg Space Agency (LSA), the European Space Resources Innovation Centre (ESRIC) and Air Liquide, a French industrial gas supplier, signed a letter of intent confirming their commitment to work together on developing research and technology (R&T) activities.

In the coming months, the four partners will be pursuing their discussions on research projects encompassing space exploration and in situ resource utilisation (ISRU).

Luxembourg's Ministry of State and the Ministry of Education, Children and Youth have announced that a Holocaust education centre will open its doors at the Abbey of Cinqfontaines next year.

During a ceremony held at the abbey on Sunday in memory of the nearly 300 Jews who were interned there before their deportation, Luxembourg's Minister of Education, Children and Youth, Claude Meisch, announced the opening of a centre for citizenship education and remembrance of the victims of the Shoah (also known as the Holocaust) in 2022.

During the Second World War, the former Abbey of Cinqfontaines was requisitioned and used in Luxembourg as a place of internment for Jews. Internment in appalling living conditions preceded deportation to Nazi concentration and extermination camps such as Theresienstadt and Auschwitz.

Laut einer Studie im deutschen Spiegel hat Luxemburg die Corona-Krise bislang gut bewältigt. In einem globalen Vergleich, der auf vier Kriterien basiert (Übersterblichkeit, Ausmaß der Einschränkungen, Rückgang des BIP und Impfquote), liegt Finnland an der Spitze der Liste. Obwohl Luxemburg in jeder der vier großen Kategorien außerhalb der Top 10 liegt, hat es sich in der Gesamtstudie auf Platz 2 der Weltrangliste positioniert. «Die Bilanz ändert sich ständig», denn die Pandemie ist nicht vorbei, stellt die in Deutschland hoch angesehene Publikation fest.

Die Autoren der Studie, die «die Erfolge und Misserfolge der Regierungen in ihren Daten erfasst» haben, sehen keine einzelne Ursache für gutes Management, sondern «eine Kombination von Faktoren». Zudem fanden sie einen Zusammenhang zwischen Krisenmanagement und dem politischen System, wonach die Top 10 Demokratien waren, mit Ausnahme von Singapur (6.). Die Veröffentlichung der Studie wurde in Luxemburg positiv aufgenommen, so auch von Familienministerin Corinne Cahen (DP), die das Ergebnis auf Twitter teilte. «Die Hauptdiskussion wird jetzt sein, warum Luxemburg nicht den ersten Platz belegt», witzelte die LSAP-Abgeordnete Francine Closener.
