Luxembourg's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Economy, Étienne Schneider, and Secretary General and Executive Head of the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR), Marc Schiltz, have signed an agreement to develop a programme to support research for the commercial space industry in Luxembourg. The "Space Research Programme" will provide funding for national public research institutions and Luxembourg based companies to collaborate with each other to advance knowledge, to attract and nurture top-tier talent, and to provide sustaining contributions to the Luxembourg space industry ecosystem.
Funded projects will need to be conducting research that supports the country’s space vision. Research results, new technologies and expertise will later be at the disposal of the local space and non-space industries. Deputy Prime Minister Schneider stated: "Since the 1980s, a strong R&D culture and cross-sector co-operation has been key to a thriving ecosystem that stimulates innovation and accelerates the evolution of business in space. The new research program will further encourage local space business players to team up with Luxembourg’s research community to develop competencies and talent for a burgeoning space sector". The FNR is the main funder of research activities in Luxembourg. Its Secretary General and Executive Head, Marc Schiltz, declared: "The 'Space Research Programme' is in line with FNR's vision to establish Luxembourg as a leading knowledge-based society through science, research and innovation, thereby contributing to the country’s economic diversification in a key high-tech sector like the space industry.

From Leonardo da Vinci and Galileo to Stephen Hawking, the moon has long held a fascination for astronomers, philosophers, scientists and stargazers. Now it is also becoming a focus for a growing number of companies as rapid technological progress makes lunar mining more viable. The potential upside for space start-ups is clear, with lunar resources including water, helium-3 and rare-earth minerals estimated to be worth quadrillions of dollars.
Tech companies aiming high Moon Express – the first private company to get US government approval to go to the moon – is one of the players at the forefront of this new space race. The Florida-based firm, led by space entrepreneur Bob Richards, is entirely focused on mining the moon for minerals and water. It has developed a moon-specific lander called the MX-1E, which is in testing phase at its Cape Canaveral headquarters.
Another challenger is Deep Space Industries. Like its competitors, the California-based firm is trying to reduce the cost of deep space exploration – currently estimated at more than US$1 billion per mission – to make resource extraction viable. Focused more on asteroid exploration than moon mining, Deep Space Industries’ Chief Business Developer, Peter Stibrany, predicts prospecting is only five years away.
Planetary Resources, a start-up backed by Luxembourg (yes, the country) and Google’s Larry Page and Eric Schmidt, is another industry newcomer working on technology that it hopes will make underground asteroid exploration a reality from 2020. Like Deep Space Industries, Planetary Resources wants to dig up water and minerals in space for use in orbit, rather than transporting them back to earth.
Other firms include Los Angeles-based OffWorld, Japan’s ispace and Kleos Space, which is developing robotic explorers to mine the moon. Elon Musk’s SpaceX, meanwhile, has been working on the problem of launch costs with reusable rockets, which could help lower the cost of getting to the moon. A race is on to mine billions of dollars in resources from the solar system’s asteroids, fuelling our future among the stars. An artist’s impression of Japan’s Hayabusa spacecraft approaching the Itokawa asteroid in 2010. Photograph: Jaxa In an industrial park in San Jose, California, Grant Bonin is holding what looks like the end of a metal water bottle. It is the casing, he jokes, of his company’s “flying steam kettle”: a propulsion system for small spacecraft that uses super-hot water vapour, heated to 1,000C (1,832F), to produce thrust. The company has sold about 40 to date. “It comes right out of the hole,” explains Bonin, who is the chief technology officer of Deep Space Industries (DSI).
It is literally rocket science, but the ultimate aim of Bonin’s startup is even more audacious: mining asteroids. No private company has even got close to one. One of the main reasons asteroids will be mined in the future, so the thinking goes, is for the water locked in their clay deposits – and one of the chief uses of that water is likely to be as propellant for spacecraft. Probes and other spacecraft will be able to refuel in space either directly with water, or the hydrogen and oxygen that can be created from it, enabling them to zip around merrily anywhere they want with no end to their useful life. But before the idea of a solar system dotted with gas stations is realised, what is needed are more spacecraft that can actually run on water, which is where selling flying steam kettles comes in.
New Space
Learn more / En savoir plus / Mehr erfahren: https://www.scoop.it/t/luxembourg-europe/?&tag=Space

Learn more / En savoir plus / Mehr erfahren: https://www.scoop.it/t/luxembourg-europe/?&tag=Space

KLEOS Space Successfully Raises Capital and Heads into the Australian Stock Exchange
Luxembourg/Sydney based company, Kleos Space S.A., have successfully closed AU$11 million in funding and will begin trading on the Australian Stock Exchange today (Friday, August 24) at 11:00 a.m.
Co-founder and CEO of the company, Andy Bowyer, feels that the interest shown in Kleos’ by investors is reflective of the worlds current desire to advance space-powered intelligence, particularly in Australia. Backed by the Luxembourg government, the company’s satellites will be able to locate radio transmissions from anywhere on Earth, detecting where the transmission was transmitted from... and when.
Plans to construct the company’s first satellites are already underway. After the successful first mission, Kleos hopes to grow their number of satellite systems and strengthen the company’s service offering. In May, the federal government introduced a new legislation aimed at growing Australia’s satellite launch capability, and announced it will provide $26 million to establish a national space agency. In 2017 the Government also pledged to invest $500 million in improving Australia’s space-based Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities. As a new space race gathers pace, many tech executives have sold Mars as humankind’s off-Earth destiny. But they may be looking too far afield. Our most immediate chance for life-beyond-Earth lies much closer, a path likely to be blazed by far lesser-known companies.
Building colonies on the Moon will “provide a blueprint to Mars”, Nasa scientists say. The men and women who will found these lunar settlements will in all likelihood be employed by small private mining companies, not tech tycoons. Many of these companies are connected to the tiny EU nation of Luxembourg.
Amazingly, Nasa believes such Moon colonies could be established within the next four years. Learn more / En savoir plus / Mehr erfahren: https://www.scoop.it/t/luxembourg-europe/?&tag=Space
