Pour intégrer ce cursus, les postulants devaient être titulaires d'un baccalauréat ou d'une maîtrise en physique, mathématiques, ingénierie, informatique, géophysique ou science, histoire que chaque participant aborde les cours techniques avec le même bagage.  

Concept unique
Le but de ce master, qui se déroulera sur deux années, est de fournir aux étudiants les compétences nécessaires en ingénierie, entrepreneuriat et gestion de projets pour travailler dans le secteur spatial. 

Il s'agit d'un concept unique, comme le souligne la directrice Tonie Van Dam: «C'est la seule formation intégrant l'enseignement et l'apprentissage des missions spatiales, les ressources et la robotique à des cours en finance ou de gestion de projet. Les étudiants vont également acquérir les compétences informatiques nécessaires pour interpréter les observations de l'espace. Ce type de programme est particulièrement utile au Luxembourg où les start-up sont très fortement soutenues.»

During the visit of Luxembourg’s Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of the Economy, Étienne Schneider to the NorthStar Earth & Space headquarters in Montreal, a cooperation was launched to enable a Clean Space initiative to foster sustainability in space. The Clean Space initiative would evaluate the use of NorthStar Earth and Space Information services with the support of Luxembourg’s insurance, financial and satellite operator communities to address some of the key issues related to space traffic management, sustainable commercialization of space activities, insurance products for space operations to promote growth in commercial space activities, and satellite operational challenges.

Le 18 juillet 2019, lors de la dernière journée de la mission économique en Corée du Sud, le Vice-Premier ministre, ministre de l'Économie, Étienne Schneider, a présenté le secteur spatial luxembourgeois au "Korea Space Forum". Il s'agit de la première conférence ayant lieu en Asie du Nord-Est qui se consacre entièrement à l'émergence de l'industrie spatiale commerciale qui vise à explorer les possibilités économiques de l'espace. Placé sous le thème "Open Space Era, from Idea to Reality", le forum à Seoul a été organisé par le ministère de la Science et des TIC de la république de Corée, en collaboration avec Donga Science, une société de médias spécialisée dans les sciences, et l'Institut coréen de recherche aérospatiale.

The European Space Agency (ESA) recently chose the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) as a developer of novel nontoxic and antimicrobial surface treatments for the interior of spacecraft in order to ensure the safety of future human space missions. 

On 4 March 2019, LIST’s materials department officially launched its 18-month research project “ESA NBactspace”. As a pioneer within the scientific community, LIST will develop novel nontoxic coatings with antimicrobial broad spectrum activity for the interior of spacecraft. 

The surface treatments used on spacecraft interiors recently proved to have a long-term toxicity risk due to their composition based on heavy metal particles, such as silver and copper. In parallel, a growing number of pathogen strains have shown resistance to antibiotics. At a time of increasing human space missions, safety against such toxicity is considered a high priority.

The Luxembourg Ministry of the Economy and Thales Alenia Space today signed a letter of intent regarding the creation of a Digital Centre of Excellence in the Grand Duchy.

By signing this letter of intent, Thales Alenia Space, a joint venture between Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%), has confirmed its intention to accelerate its initiatives and cooperation with Luxembourg. The new centre, Thales Alenia Space in Luxembourg, will focus on the development of highly innovative digital solutions for space telecommunications and observation products.

Fully supported by the Ministry of the Economy of Luxembourg and the Luxembourg Space Agency, the initiative completely aligns with Luxembourg's Space and Digital Strategy.

Auf die Frage, wie lange er, der die Dauer, in der ein Minister kontinuierlich Mitglied der Regierung sein darf, im Referendum vom Juni 2015 ja auf zehn Jahre begrenzen wollte, sein Regierungsamt dann noch auszuüben gedenke, gab Schneider an, dass im Leben etwas passieren könne, das einen dazu bringe, etwas anderes zu machen. Im Moment habe er jedenfalls noch große Lust, und sei in seinen beiden Ressorts voll motiviert. Er werde also bis auf weiteres auf seinem Posten bleiben.

Die jeweils wichtigsten Punkte aus dem Regierungsprogramm zum Wirtschafts- und zum Gesundheitsministerium fassen wir nachstehend zusammen.

Dezentralisierung der Wirtschaft
Etienne Schneider zeigt sich überzeugt, dass man nicht alles rund um die Hauptstadt konzentrieren dürfe. So soll zum Beispiel die „Nordstad“ weiter ausgebaut werden, die zu einem wichtigen „Pôle de développement économique“ werden soll. Auch werde versucht, eine Reihe von Aktivitäten an den Grenzen anzusiedeln, um dort die Leute aufzufangen, die ja sowieso zu einem Großteil aus dem Ausland kommen würden. Hier gebe es bereits konkrete Projekte.

Die Universität Luxemburg startet zu Beginn des kommenden Semesters einen Raumfahrt-Studiengang. Der “Interdisciplinary Space Master” ist ein Masterstudiengang, der sowohl technische als auch wirtschaftliche Aspekte der Raumfahrt behandeln soll. Laut einer Mitteilung der Regierung ist der Studiengang “einzigartig in Europa”, da sich die Studierenden Wissen im Management von gewerblicher Raumfahrt aneignen können.

Der Studiengang wird von der Luxemburger Raumfahrtbehörde mitfinanziert.

Kleos Space S.A., the space technology provider of activity-based intelligence data for defence, asset protection and rescue, has confirmed that their first cluster of satellites has entered the Integration Phase after successfully undergoing Critical Design Review (CDR) with Gomspace A/S.
The CDR ensured the satellites could proceed towards assembly, validation, integration and testing and confirms they meet stated performance cost, schedule, and risk requirements.

The satellites are being built by nanosatellite specialist GomSpace A/S, a subsidiary of GomSpace AB (SS:GOMX), a European-based Nasdaq-listed global aerospace construction partner. The Kleos Scouting Mission satellites will be launched by RocketLab on an Electron rocket from Launch Complex1 in New Zealand in Q2 2019. The satellites will be integrated into Rocket Lab’s in-house designed and built Maxwell dispensers and deployed from the Electron kick stage to Low Earth Orbit. 
The Kleos Scouting Mission satellites will operate at low orbit enabling the company’s commercialisation of its ‘Data as a Service’ (DaaS) product this year. The first Kleos Space satellite cluster, known as Kleos Scouting Mission (KSM), will perform technology demonstrations that will be the keystone for a later global high capacity constellation.

LIST AND ISPACE EUROPE ON TRACK TOWARDS LUNAR RESOURCE PROSPECTING

In 2017, the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) and ispace Europe – a Japanese lunar exploration company whose European headquarters are in Luxembourg – formed a strategic partnership with the aim of developing a first mission to prospect for resources on the Moon and, in particular, to detect and analyze water. A year later, initial research work on the development of an instrument capable of detecting water in situ at a lunar pole and performing an initial mapping of the water distribution in a polar region truly began. October 2018 saw the start-up of the dedicated FOCAL1DS - "Space Deployable 1-Dimensional Focal Plane Detector for Magnetic Sector Mass Spectrometer" research project, funded by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR), which will run for two years.

A COMPACT MOBILE MASS SPECTROMETER ON THE LUNAR SURFACE
With the aim of increasing human presence in space while at the same time using the resources available on the Moon, ispace Europe plans to detect and analyze the potential water resources present on the Moon. To achieve this, a compact mobile mass spectrometer roving the lunar surface is vital. But while ispace Europe develops lunar exploration technologies, these still need to be coupled with a high-performance compact mass spectrometer that is specially adapted for space applications.

And LIST has precisely the mass spectrometry technology that is proven to be effective for such applications. Through the recently completed MS-SPACE - "Development and benchmarking of a compact mass spectrometer for space applications" project, also funded by the FNR, its researchers were able to adapt and further develop their own mass spectrometry technology for space applications in partnership with NASA's Ames Research Center (USA). After two years of research, the technology – deployable in space to meet NASA's requirements – revealed its full potential.

La start-up taïwanaise a remporté à Bilbao le soutien du gouvernement luxembourgeois dans le cadre d’un concours organisé par l’Agence spatiale européenne. Elle devrait s’installer sous peu au Grand-Duché.

C’est lors de la conférence internationale Space for Inspiration, organisée la semaine dernière à Bilbao par l’Agence spatiale européenne, qu’Odysseus Space a remporté le prix du Spaceresources.lu Challenge.

Celui-ci récompense les meilleures idées de business pour l’exploration spatiale. La start-up originaire de Taïwan accède ainsi à la possibilité d’obtenir à un financement de la part du gouvernement pouvant aller jusqu’à 500.000 euros.

On Wednesday 10 October 2018, the Government of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, represented by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Economy, Étienne Schneider, and the Czech Republic, represented by the Minister of Transport, Dan Ťok, signed a memorandum of understanding on a cooperation in the frame of space resources exploration and utilization.    
 
Both countries agreed to regularly consult and exchange views on their positions regarding the economic, legal, regulatory and technological aspects of the commercial utilization of space resources discussed in international fora and organisations such as the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNCOPUOS) and its subcommittees. 
 
Furthermore, Luxembourg and the Czech Republic agreed to promote and to seek a constructive dialogue with other United Nations Member States with the goal to establish a clear and transparent global framework for the utilisation of space resources that may lead to new scientific information and knowledge about the solar system and to valuable commercial applications.

La société japonaise Ispace, présente au Luxembourg depuis début 2017, a dévoilé jeudi soir un banc d’essai de 100m2 qui simule les aspérités présentes sur le satellite naturel de la Terre. Objectif: tester le robot qui devra trouver et exploiter l’eau qui y est emprisonnée.

Au lendemain de la signature d’un contrat avec SpaceX pour le lancement de robots à destination de la Lune, Ispace reste sur le devant de la scène. Depuis son quartier général européen, situé au sein du Paul Wurth Incub, la société japonaise a dévoilé jeudi soir un banc d’essai pour le moins étonnant, puisque composé d’un bac à sable de quelque 100m2, simulant à l’identique une partie du sol lunaire.

«Nous avons ouvert cette plate-forme d’expérimentation scientifique au grand public pour donner une plus grande visibilité du secteur spatial et particulièrement du new space présent au Luxembourg», indique Kyle Acierno, directeur d’Ispace Luxembourg.

Composé actuellement de 20 entreprises internationales, employant quelque 70 personnes, ce secteur promu via l’initiative Spaceresources.lu ambitionne de représenter quelque «500 personnes» d’ici 2020, selon les chiffres avancés jeudi par Étienne Schneider (LSAP), ministre de l’Économie, qui se référait aux business plans des sociétés qui ont fait le choix du Grand-Duché.

La société japonaise Ispace procédera à deux lancements vers la Lune en collaboration avec la société de lanceurs SpaceX du milliardaire américain Elon Musk.

La société japonaise Ispace aurait trouvé un accord avec la société SpaceX pour opérer deux lancements en direction de la Lune à partir de 2020. Selon le Wort, Kyle Acierno, le directeur d’Ispace Luxembourg, l’annoncera ce mercredi matin.

Le premier lancement devrait permettre d’emmener l’engin spatial Hakuto-R en orbite autour de la Lune au premier trimestre 2020. Le second interviendra dans les mois suivants, avant la mi-2020, et devrait permettre un alunissage pour l’engin lunaire modulaire développé par Ispace.

La société japonaise a développé un centre de recherche au Luxembourg dans le cadre du programme Spaceresources.lu.

Son objectif est de trouver de l’eau présente massivement sur la Lune pour en faire du carburant, en agissant sur les propriétés des molécules de l’or bleu.

Officiellement, Kleos Space change d’orbite pour avoir 2 à 4,5 fois plus de données maritimes à proposer à ses clients. La réalité, c’est que face aux difficultés de Rocket Lab à tenir son calendrier, la société luxembourgeoise a signé avec les Indiens de PSLV.

Un lanceur peut en cacher un autre, à condition de le mettre sur de bons rails. C’est ce que Kleos Space vient de faire. Dans un communiqué diffusé ce lundi, la société luxembourgeoise annonce avoir signé avec les Indiens de PSLV.

Le Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) est un lanceur de moyenne portée, «extrêmement fiable, conçu et exploité par l’Organisation indienne de recherche spatiale», admet Kleos Space dans son communiqué. Ce choix permet de rester dans l’objectif de lancer au quatrième trimestre de cette année – même si les objectifs étaient d’abord de lancer début août, délai qui n’est pas rare dans le monde spatial.

On 18 July 2019, during the last day of the economic mission to South Korea, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Economy, Étienne Schneider, presented the Luxembourg space sector at the "Korea Space Forum". This is the first conference in Northeast Asia devoted entirely to the emergence of the commercial space industry, which aims to explore the economic possibilities of space. Under the theme "Open Space Era, from Idea to Reality", the forum in Seoul was organised by the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT, in collaboration with Donga Science, a media company specialised in science, and the Korean Institute for Aerospace Research.

La deuxième journée de la mission économique luxembourgeoise en Corée du Sud a notamment été marquée par un accord avec l’entreprise spatiale coréenne Contec. Elle a annoncé qu’elle comptait implanter son siège européen à Luxembourg.

Le Luxembourg confirme son statut de nation des start-up lors de la mission économique en Corée du Sud. À l’occasion de ce voyage mené par  le ministre Schneider , Contec, une entreprise dérivée de l’Institut de recherche aérospatiale de la Corée, a annoncé son intention d’implanter son siège européen à Luxembourg.

Actuellement fournisseur de services de stations, Contec vise à étendre ses activités au sol, au traitement de données d’images spécial. L’entreprise créée en 2015 a participé à l’ICT Spring Europe au Luxembourg cette année et en 2018.

Dans le cadre de la visite du pavillon de l'entreprise Thales Alenia Space et d'un échange avec leur président Jean Loïc Galle, le Vice-Premier ministre, ministre de l'Économie, Étienne Schneider a signé avec Thales Alenia Space une déclaration commune relative à l'implantation au Luxembourg d'un centre de compétence digital. Ce centre spécialisé de Thales Alenia Space, prévu pour fin 2019, se concentrera sur le développement de solutions digitales innovantes pour les services de télécommunication et d'observation spatiales.

Étienne Schneider a déclaré: "Ce projet s'aligne parfaitement avec notre stratégie d'innovation basée sur les données qui facilitera au Luxembourg le développement continu d'une économie de données durable et de confiance. De plus, le centre de compétences de Thales Alenia Space vient compléter et diversifier notre écosystème d'entreprises et de centres de recherche actifs dans le secteur spatial."

L’Université du Luxembourg et le fabricant européen de fusées ArianeGroup ont annoncé, ce mardi, un accord de collaboration pour promouvoir la recherche dans le domaine des systèmes de propulsion.

L’Université du Luxembourg a annoncé, ce mardi, dans un communiqué, la signature d’un partenariat avec ArianeGroup pour promouvoir la recherche dans le domaine des systèmes de propulsion. «Ce projet de deux ans a pour objet de réduire le coût de lancement des fusées. La recherche est financée par ArianeGroup et le Fonds national de la recherche (FNR) du Luxembourg», ajoute le communiqué de l’Uni.

Luxembourg expects to sign a space cooperation agreement with the US, anticipated to be the “most far-reaching agreement since the launch” of the Space Resources initiative.

Speaking at a Space Café meeting at BIL headquarters on 26 February, deputy prime minister and economy minister Etienne Schneider told an audience of over 100 people that the US ambassador to Luxembourg had said the White House was very interested in Luxembourg’s activities in the newspace sector.

“The first thing I thought was ‘that’s not good because I’m not minister of defence any more. I won’t be able to defend my initiative’. He explained that they really see a bright future between Luxembourg and the US in order to put our forces together to further develop our activities,” the minister said.

Le Luxembourg a signé mardi une alliance avec la Belgique pour travailler ensemble, avec leurs partenaires européens, à l’élaboration d’un cadre international de l’exploration minière spatiale.
Le Luxembourg et la Belgique ont décidé de s'associer pour développer l’exploration et l’utilisation des ressources dans l’espace. Dans cette perspective, Étienne Schneider, ministre de l’Économie, et Didier Reynders, vice-premier ministre de Belgique, ont signé à Bruxelles une déclaration commune dans laquelle les deux pays s’engagent à collaborer ensemble au développement d’un cadre international pour l’exploration et l’utilisation des ressources spatiales.

Selon Étienne Schneider, "cette collaboration renforcée nous permettra d'identifier et de discuter nos intérêts communs dans l'exploration et l'utilisation des ressources spatiales".

Après la Chine, le Japon, les Émirats arabes unis, la République tchèque, le Portugal et la Pologne, la Belgique, est le septième pays avec lequel le Luxembourg coopérera dans le secteur des ressources spatiales.

Luxemburg greift nach den Sternen, oder besser gesagt nach dem Mond. Seit Oktober 2018 arbeitet die luxemburgische Firma iSpace zusammen mit dem Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (List) an einer Möglichkeit, den Mond wirtschaftlich nutzbar zu machen. Das Unternehmen iSpace, dessen Mutterkonzern in Tokio sitzt, hat sich auf die Entwicklung von Robotertechnologie für den Weltraumeinsatz spezialisiert.

Wem gehört der Mond?

Rechtlich gesehen ist der Abbau von Ressourcen im Weltall vergleichbar mit dem Fischen im Meer, erklärt Kyle Acierno. Das Meer selbst gehöre zwar niemandem und niemand könne das Meer als Besitz für sich beanspruchen, anders sei dies jedoch mit den Fischen. Wer die Fische angelt, dem gehören sie auch.
Damit es auf dem Mond nicht zu Streitereien über die Ressourcen kommt, arbeiten führende Unternehmen gerade an Regelungen. Eine Regel könnten 50 Kilometer Abstand zwischen zwei Projekten sein, um zu vermeiden, dass sie sich gegenseitig gefährden. Beispielsweise durch aufgewirbelten Staub und Schutt.
Das Institut List versteht sich als Brücke, die die neuesten Forschungen mit der praxisorientierten Wirtschaft verbinden soll. Gemeinsam entwickeln sie einen Rover, der Ressourcen auf dem Mond finden und in ferner Zukunft nutzbar machen soll. Die Technik für den Rover und die dazugehörige Landestation kommt vom japanischen Mutterkonzern von iSpace. List arbeitet an Geräten, mit denen der Rover, Proben auf dem Mond analysieren soll.

Mehr als 80 Millionen Dollar hat das japanische iSpace bereits in die Entwicklung der Rover investiert. Ein Teil davon ist auch in die luxemburgische Niederlassung geflossen – die übrigens die einzige in Europa ist. Seit zwei Jahren arbeitet diese an dem Projekt. Bald steht bereits der erste Weltraumflug an: Mit dem privaten US-amerikanischen Raumfahrtunternehmen SpaceX, das Reisen in den Weltraum nutzbar machen möchte, startet der Rover 2020 ins Weltall. 2021 soll er dann auf dem Mond landen.

The Luxembourg Space Agency has announced that, along with the Space Frontier Foundation, is organising the 2nd NewSpace Europe conference on 27 and 28 November 2018 at the European Convention Center Luxembourg (ECCL) in Luxembourg-Kirchberg.

NewSpace Europe is the only annual space conference in Europe to focus solely on the new space industry and the emerging opportunities in the space sector, the Global Space Economy.

Leaders from industry and major corporations, entrepreneurs, investors and representatives from government agencies will meet in Luxembourg to explore how the space industry can break down barriers to economic growth and fuel the expansion of the commercial space industry with a focus on launch, remote sensing, investment, space-based economy and communications.

LuxCube: First CubeSat satellite student project in Luxembourg!

LuxCube is first CubeSat satellite student project to be developed at the University of Luxembourg. Having primary educational objective, LuxCube project aims to provide hands-on satellite-build experience to students. Students will learn to design, build, test, and operate space hardware. LuxCube design complies with one unit CubeSat standards of 10x10x10cm in size and a maximum weight of 1.33kg.

LuxCube secondary mission objective is to image the Earth’s surface, particularly Luxembourg, and to evaluate the flight data collected from the subsystems for future CubeSat’s designs.

The arrival of Made In Space, Hydrosat and CubeRover further widens the spectrum of activates of the Luxembourg business-oriented space ecosystem and reinforces the Luxembourg space capabilities.

Étienne Schneider stated: “We have managed to forge for the Grand-Duchy a repute of an innovation-focused and progressive location for commercial space initiatives. The success of our development strategy for the space sector, including the recent launch of the Luxembourg Space Agency, is confirmed once more with the settlement in Luxembourg of three space companies that plan to employ up to 85 people in the Grand-Duchy by 2023.”

Made In Space, Inc. will open a Luxembourg facility focusing on bringing low-cost robotic systems to the European market. Jason Dunn, Founder & Director at Made In Space, said: “We see our robot arms as being integral to constructing space gateways, building lunar habitats, and assisting in the in-space construction of future space stations. Combining Made In Space’s success on orbit with the strategic locale of Luxembourg positions us to develop the best possible product for our customers.”

Hydrosat, a data analytics company that converts thermal infrared imagery from space into innovative business products for agriculture and related industries, will establish new headquarters in the Grand Duchy and move its R&D activities to the Luxembourg operations.  Royce Dalby, CEO of Hydrosat, said: “We were attracted by the excellent business environment and the cutting-edge data analytics in Luxembourg. CubeRover, as spin out organization from Astrobotic Technology, Inc., the space robotics company based in Pittsburgh, USA, will develop next-generation planetary rovers in Luxembourg. Mike Provenzano, President of CubeRover said: “With the launch of CubeRover in the Grand Duchy we will enable customers around the world to begin pursuing lunar science, exploration, and commerce with low-cost rovers. Luxembourg is buzzing with talent and creativity for innovative space technology.
