Trutzig behaupten sich die Überreste des Forts Thüngen gegenüber der Moderne. Das 1732/33 auf dem Kirchberg-Plateau errichtete Fort beherbergt seit 2012 das Museum Dräi Eechelen, das der Geschichte des Forts und der Stadt Luxemburg gewidmet ist und durch seinen Multimediabereich, audiovisuelle Dokumentationen sowie seiner interaktiven Datenbank über alles verfügt, was ein Museum des 21. Jahrhunderts heutzutage leisten kann und muss.

Dabei war der Erhalt des noch bestehenden Reduits des Forts Thüngen ursprünglich gefährdet, denn als die Planungen für das Musée d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean, MUDAM, liefen, sollte es dem Museumsbau weichen, das vom Architekten Ieoh Ming Pei gebaut werden sollte. Doch nach Protesten aus der Bürgerschaft gab die Verwaltung nach, und der chinesische Star-Architekt ersann eine einzigartige Verbindung von Alt und Neu, von Stein und Glas, von Hell und Dunkel, indem er die beiden Gebäude miteinander trotz aller Gegensätzlichkeiten zu einer Einheit verschmelzen ließ.

Luxembourg is something of a hidden gem nestled between the borders of Belgium, France and Germany.

Slightly smaller than Lancashire – and with less than half the population – the Grand Duchy has remained hidden in plain sight from those looking for a continental break.

Rich in history it offers fortifications, chateaux and old town streets for those keen to step back through the centuries and go exploring with the fairytale Vianden Castle the pick of the bunch.
Built on a rocky promontory it towers over the pretty little ‘city’ of Vianden (pop. 2,000) and is best accessed from an Alpine chairlift offering breathtaking views along the River Our and across to neighbouring Germany.

The Gothic castle dates back to the 10th century and has been rebuilt several times and even survived the Battle of the Bulge during the Second World War intact, perhaps endorsing its impregnable location.
Indeed across the ages the people of Luxembourg proved adept at creating mighty fortifications as they faced the threat of invaders from different quarters.

Among the most popular of the capital’s attractions the Bock Casemates were considered a model for European military architecture for hundreds of years.
Dubbed the ‘Gibraltar of the North’ the mysterious tunnels of the bastion have witnessed the comings and goings of life Luxembourg from their vantage point high up in the sheer city walls.

Nicht weit vom Eingang des Wildparks stehen drei Holzhäuser. Zwei dieser «Baumhäuser» bieten Platz für sechs Personen, das dritte für vier Personen. Die Hütten sind fertig, trotzdem müssen noch einige Arbeiten fertiggestellt werden. Die Holzhütten bieten künftig ein neuartiges Übernachtungsangebot für Besucher. Diese Idee des Umbaus steht bereits seit 50 Jahren im Raum – jetzt wurde sie endlich umgesetzt.

«Es ist ein teures Projekt, das zu 70 Prozent von der Stadt Esch und dem Wirtschaftsministerium finanziert wird. Kommt das Projekt bei den Besuchern gut an, können wir das Angebot um weitere Hütten erweitern», sagt die Leiterin des Tierparks Anne Meyers.

Die Unterkünfte sollen ganzjährig geöffnet bleiben, ebenso wie der Tierpark. «Unser Ziel ist es, die Öffentlichkeit für die Natur zu sensibilisieren und sie zu respektieren. Wenn Familien die Möglichkeit haben, Momente in der Natur zu erleben, lernen auch Kinder den respektvollen Umgang», erklärt Meyers weiter.

Luxemburg darf sich über ein globales Schaufenster freuen. Der französische Sender «TV5 Monde» zeigt in dieser Woche einen Beitrag über das Großherzogtum. Der Kanal wird in 200 Ländern ausgestrahlt und erreicht wöchentlich 50 Millionen Zuschauer. Für die Reihe «Destination Francophonie» drehten sie bei uns.

«Du musst nach Luxemburg kommen, um mit Klischees zu brechen. Nein, es gibt nicht nur Banken und Geschäftsleute in Anzügen. Es ist kein Land, in dem man sich zu Tode langweilt und es nichts zu sehen gibt...» Schon die ersten Sätze von Moderator Ivan Kabacoff zeigen, wohin die Reise geht.

Stolz auf Mehrsprachigkeit
Natürlich geht es auch um die Sprachen. Deshalb besucht «TV5 Monde» mehrere Schulen, darunter auch die in Munsbach. «Wir lehren Luxemburgisch, Französisch und Deutsch. Es ist eine tägliche Herausforderung für unsere Lehrer», sagt Anna Schmitt, Präsidentin der Luxemburger Vereinigung unabhängiger Lehrer (APLF). «Die Lehrer müssen in ihrer Ausbildung Tests in drei Sprachen bestehen.»

Le nombre de nuitées comptabilisées l'an passé au Grand-Duché a légèrement dépassé la barre des trois millions, selon des chiffres présentés ce mardi par le ministère de l'Économie et Luxembourg for tourism (LFT). La progression sur un an est de 4,3%, selon ces données qui ne tiennent pas compte des locations, des gîtes, et de l'économie partagée (Airbnb, etc.). L'hébergement dans l'hôtellerie est en hausse de 4% et représente plus de la moitié du total, devant les campings (un million de nuitées pour la première fois depuis 2015, +4%) et les auberges de jeunesse, qui profitent de l'ouverture d'une nouvelle infrastructure à Esch-sur-Alzette (+12%).

Une étude sur l'ampleur des logements proposés à la location pour les touristes par les particuliers, de type Airbnb, doit être présentée d'ici cet été par le ministère de l'Économie. «Ce phénomène d'économie partagée est en principe une bonne chose, car il offre une complémentarité par rapport aux hébergements classiques. Mais c'est une activité commerciale et il faut penser aux impôts. Peut-être devra-t-on l'encadrer et la réglementer davantage», a expliqué Francine Closener.

Au-delà de ce nouveau site, les raisons de cette performance sont, selon LFT, liés au retour de la clientèle lointaine, au dynamisme de l'économie, à la météo favorable, ou encore à la promotion renforcée sur les marchés prioritaires. Les touristes venant de Suisse ont ainsi consommé 12% de nuitées supplémentaires entre 2016 et 2017, ceux originaires de Grande-Bretagne, des États-Unis et de Chine étaient 9% de plus.

Les touristes venant des pays voisins et des Pays-Bas restent les plus représentés. «L'offre sur le terrain grandit, et on y investit. La promotion est aussi plus stratégique, plus ciblée» explique Anne Hoffmann, directeur de LFT.

Today, on 10 January 2018, Luxembourg Secretary of State for the Economy, Francine Closener, presented the strategic framework for the evolution of the tourism sector by 2022.

Presented in the form of a document entitled Tourism 2022, the strategic framework sets a course for the sector and formulates the way in which Luxembourg wants to position itself as a quality and diversified tourist destination over the next five years.

This vision for 2022 is the result of a joint reflection initiated by Francine Closener and led by the Directorate General of Tourism of the Ministry of Economy in collaboration with its partners. The document sets out the common foundations on which the different actors and branches of the tourism sector can rely when developing their respective strategies.

Im vergangenen Jahr besuchten 129.682 Menschen die Bock-Kasematten. Damit war das im 17. Jahrhundert angelegte unterirdische Verteidigungssystem die meistbesuchte Sehenswürdigkeit in Luxemburg. In der Schwesteranlage, den Petruss-Kasematten, wurden seit 2014 fast keine Besucher empfangen. Lediglich in den Schulferien wurden sie für insgesamt 12.724 Schaulustige geöffnet. Seit der erneuten Schließung liefen die Vorbereitungen für die anstehenden Arbeiten auf Hochtouren.

«Wir beginnen gerade mit einer Reihe von technischen Umbauten, beispielsweise Elektroinstallationen. Außerdem wollen wir ein neues Sicherheitskonzept realisieren», sagt Tom Bellion, Direktor des Luxembourg City Tourist Office (LCTO), das seit 1977 die Kasematten betreibt.

In einem Land wie Luxemburg in dem Europa zu 85 % in der Bevölkerung gelebt wird, kommt es nicht auf die eigne Flächengröße an, denn davon hat das Großherzogtum mit rund 2.600 Quadratkilometern in der Tat nicht ganz so viel abbekommen. Dafür hat es andere Vorzüge wie z.b. den, dass man aus 60 km normaler Wegstrecke, durchaus locker 230 km Motorradtour auf besten Straßen planen kann, ohne sich dabei weh zu tun.

Finanzplatz, EU-Metropole, UNESCO-Kulturerbe: Luxemburg-Stadt präsentiert sich auch als attraktives Ziel für einen Städtetrip. Kaum ein Ort, dem der Spagat zwischen Weltstadt und provinziellem Charme so gut gelingt.

In der Hauptstadt des wohlhabenden Großherzogtums leben Menschen aus mehr als 170 Nationen, gut 70 Prozent der 116.000 Einwohner besitzen keinen luxemburgischen Pass. Diese internationale Mischung sorgt für ein bemerkenswertes Flair. Chic und mondän ist Luxemburg-Stadt, ein klein wenig wie Paris mit breiten Boulevards und mediterraner Gelassenheit. Ziemlich wichtig scheint sie zu sein mit vielen EU-Institutionen auf dem Kirchberg, und doch noch urig-gemütlich.

Sie verkörpert Vielfalt, bleibt aber von der Größe her immer überschaubar. Ein Spaziergang führt zu den schönsten Ecken der "Ville de Luxembourg".

C'est une vitrine mondiale que TV5 accorde au Luxembourg cette semaine. La chaîne internationale francophone diffusée dans 200 pays et qui touche 50 millions de téléspectateurs par semaine met à l'honneur le Grand-Duché dans son émission intitulée «Destination Francophonie».

«Il faut venir au Luxembourg pour casser les clichés. Non, il n'y a pas que des banques et des hommes d'affaires en costume. Ce n'est pas un pays où l'on s'ennuie à mourir et où il n'y a rien à voir...». Le ton est donné d'emblée par le présentateur, Ivan Kabacoff, qui apparaît à l'écran et sous la neige sur le parvis de la cathédrale Notre-Dame de Luxembourg. «L'autre surprise? C'est que le Luxembourg est un pays complètement cosmopolite...», enchaîne-t-il rapidement, avant d'insister sur le nombre de frontaliers qui se rendent quotidiennement au pays pour y travailler.
«Les gens nous jalousent»

Quelle est la situation de la langue française au Luxembourg et comment donner envie d'apprendre cette langue au Grand-Duché? Pour le savoir TV5 Monde fait le pari de se rendre dans plusieurs écoles dont celle de Munsbach. «Apprendre le français en même temps que l'allemand et le luxembourgeois, c'est un défi quotidien pour nos enseignants», souligne Anna Schmitt, présidente de l'Association Luxembourgeoise des professeurs indépendants (APLF). «Pour s'y préparer, nos enseignants doivent d'ailleurs passer des diplômes dans les trois langues».

La secrétaire d’État au Tourisme, Francine Closener, a présenté mardi les résultats du bilan touristique pour l’année 2017, et les résultats sont tous positifs.

Après quelques années en petite forme, il semble que les touristes soient revenus sur les routes du Luxembourg.

Ainsi, les hôtels affichent +4% avec quelque 1,8 million de nuitées, les campings et auberges de jeunesse affichent des résultats en hausse avec 1 million de nuitées pour les campings, grâce à une météo favorable notamment. Pour ce qui est des auberges de jeunesse, l’ouverture de l’auberge à Esch-sur-Alzette a boosté le secteur (+12%).

La secrétaire d’État à l’Économie, Francine Closener, a présenté mercredi la stratégie d’évolution du secteur touristique luxembourgeois au cours des cinq prochaines années. Une enveloppe de 60 millions d’euros lui sera consacrée.

Les ambitions du Grand-Duché de « se positionner en tant que destination touristique de qualité et diversifiée », ainsi que les manières d’y parvenir, sont compilées sur une feuille de route intitulée Tourisme 2022. D’ici à cette date, un budget total de 60 millions d’euros sera alloué « pour soutenir l’amélioration continue et la création d’infrastructures touristiques ». Soit une augmentation de 30% de l’enveloppe budgétaire des cinq dernières années, souligne le ministère de l’Économie.

Vianden Castle is now equipped with an information centre to welcome its some 200,000 annual visitors.

The new information centre at the castle, which was officially inaugurated on 15 November, focuses on the different eras of construction of the building as well as the evolution of its functions.

Visitors, whether young or old, will now be able to discover the respective periods following a route that takes them through the centuries of the castle’s past. The history of the Grand Ducal family and the history of the castle have been studied and documented by historians, architects and archaeologists and this scientific work is the basis of the new centre.

Nestled in the Pétrusse Valley, behind leafy trees and in the shadow of the Viaduct lies the Chapelle Saint-Quirin, a small chapel carved into the rocky valley wall.

There are no signs, no brochures and no plaques on site to hint at the name or history of the chapel.

But, the layers of dust and cobwebs covering pews and statues locked inside the barred door and windows let passersby know that it probably hasn’t been used for a while.

Patron saint of Luxembourg

The chapel is named after Saint Quirin of Neuss who was, from 1544 to 1666, the patron saint of Luxembourg Ville. It has been an enclosed chapel since 1355, when the outer wall was built; the bell tower and rooftop were added during restorations in the late 19th Century. Religious uses of the chapel site can be traced back much further, however, as the Luxembourg City Tourist Office claims that the site was originally used by the Romans as an early Christian sanctuary.

Take a look behind the scenes of the built heritage

Heritage Days open up a number of heritage gems that are often not open to the general public, from 22 September to 8 October 2017. This year's edition, focusing on houses and people ('Haiser a Leit') not only tells the stories of the Grand Duchy's built heritage. It is more about the people that built them, shaping them and steeping them in their stories - and even their legends.

Heritage Days are known for allowing people to visit places that are not normally open to the public. So they provide a great opportunity for visiting some of the emblematic places of the Grand Duchy's built heritage and hearing the stories behind them.

For the 2017 edition, however, the National Sites and Monuments Service (Service des sites et monuments nationaux) has decided to let the people connected with these buildings speak for themselves. Relations between human determination and constructed substance, between characters and stones, between personal destinies and the destiny of the buildings: it is these links that the 2017 Heritage Days aim to bring out, offering themed guided tours and conferences to help the public (re-)discover a number of sites.

Places that are normally inaccessible, with stories that are little-known

So the programme includes not only buildings to be discovered, but also a number of destinies and stories. For example, how can you tell the story of the fortifications of the City of Luxembourg without mentioning Count Wenceslas or the French engineer Vauban? Or the story of Beaufort castle without referring to its first owner, Baron Jean of Beck, or its last, Anne-Marie Linckels?
