Natixis Asset Management has announced that investors have successfully purchased shares in its funds through FundsDLT, the Luxembourg blockchain-powered fund distribution platform for fund managers. This is the first real blockchain transaction in the global investment fund industry.
The asset manager, based in Luxembourg and a leading affiliate of Natixis Global Aasset Management, announced its intention to be the first asset management player in the industry to use the FundsDLT platform applying blockchain technology across several of its business lines. For the first time in the fund industry, investors are using a blockchain based platform to purchase real funds’ shares with real cash. FundsDLT is the result of collaboration between Fundsquare (a subsidiary of the Luxembourg Stock Exchange), InTech (a subsidiary of POST Group) and KPMG Luxembourg. The successful transaction is a significant milestone for Luxembourg’s FinTech environment and its investment fund industry. For the past four decades Luxembourg’s financial sector has been the principal driver of the country’s economy. The government now hopes that by encouraging fintech it will be able to insulate the industry from the challenges of the digital age as well as allaying concerns over the grand duchy’s high economic reliance on financial services.
That effort has taken on greater urgency over the past decade as banking secrecy has eroded and the government has been forced to rethink the business models of the country’s private banks. Reforms that threaten the country’s competitive advantage as a low-tax haven for multinational groups have also focused attention on how best to defend its status as a corporate hub.
Britain’s planned departure from the EU has provided policymakers with an incentive to build a fintech hub in Luxembourg that could attract UK technology companies looking to maintain a foothold in the EU.
Prime minister Xavier Bettel has made the country’s digital transformation a priority since succeeding the long-serving Jean-Claude Juncker in December 2013. Mr Bettel launched the Digital Lëtzebuerg [Luxembourg] initiative the following year as a platform for encouraging new technology in the financial industry as well as society as a whole. The Fintech Hotline, a simple solution to a common problem One Question, One Answer, One Immediate Solution
Fintech startups tend to have a lot of questions, and most of the time the questions are similar — related to legal issues or banking. More specific queries might be more technical, IT-related or even real-estate based. To meet the needs of the Fintech startups, based in or outside Luxembourg, the LHoFT is gathering a panel of experts to provide answers as quickly and directly as possible. The primary objective is providing a solution for the caller, but ultimately we aim to create a database of answers for the benefit of the whole Fintech ecosystem.

The Fincluders Bootcamp -- a two-week long programme dedicated to microfinance -- starts in Luxembourg on Monday.
The training will involve coaching and mentoring for 12 selected fintech start-ups looking to increase financial inclusion in a number of countries worldwide, from Jordan and Kenya to South Africa and Georgia.
The selected participants will spend one week in the Grand Duchy where they will receive extensive mentoring and coaching as well as take part in peer to peer learning activities.
The participating start-ups were selected through a Fincluders Startups competition organised by the European Fund for Southeastern Europe (EFSE) and the SANAD fund for small and medium-sized entreprises in the Middle East and North Africa.
In Luxembourg, the bootcamp is held in partnership with the Luxembourg House of Financial Technology (LHoFT) with the support of the Ministry of Finance and the Aide au Développement Autonome (ADA) organisation.
"Luxembourg is the microfinance centre for Europe and it makes sense to capitalise on this by having 12 really incredible startups from all over the world spend the week in the Grand Duchy learning as well as discussing the latest challenges of financial inclusion and networking with the Luxembourg finance community," said Nasir Zubairi, CEO of LHoFT. The Luxembourg Bankers' Association ABBL has launched a dedicated membership package for companies active in financial technology (fintech).
Responding to a growing need for banks and other financial services providers to collaborate on both regulatory and technological advancements, ABBL aims to bring these players together and help them form partnerships.
The new service will also allow fintech start-ups to gain first-hand information on Luxembourg's financial sector, from bank representatives, lawyers and consultants, and will help these small players to "have a voice" within the industry.
