The World Economic Forum's Inclusive Growth and Development Report 2017lays out strategies for cutting the current vicious cycle of stagnation and polarisation of income and opportunities. It aims to answer the question - how can this be turned into a virtuous cycle of greater social inclusion and stronger, more sustainable growth?

How can we create more inclusive societies, with higher living standards for all?

Luxembourg and Switzerland come in second and third place in a top 10 dominated by Northern Europe. This is driven by robust growth and employment, high median living standards, strong environmental stewardship and low public debt.

Scientists from Strasbourg have identified a gene: USP9 which would significantly reduce the activity of the Tau protein, responsible for Alzheimer's disease.

Although there is still a lot of work to do, this could be a start for a treatment

Les chercheurs du Luxembourg ont découvert un gène, USP9 après étude de séries de données sur des échantillons de cerveau de patients décédés.
Le gène USP9 influence l’activité de MAPT, gène impliqué dans la maladie d’Alzheimer. Son inactivation réduit l’activité de la protéine Tau et ainsi la formation des plaques séniles.
Même si des efforts restent à fournir, l’utilisation de USP9 en tant que cible pharmacologique de la maladie d’Alzheimer semble possible.

The U.S. isn't at the top of the list

With a new law barring work e-mail after hours, the French have honored a truth long recognized by economists: working longer hours doesn’t necessarily result in increased productivity. Mexico—the least productive of the 38 countries listed in 2015 data from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)—has the world’s longest average work week at 41.2 hours (including full-time and part-time workers). At the other end of the spectrum, Luxembourg, the most productive country, has an average workweek of just 29 hours.

The United States ranks fifth, according to the OECD, contributing $68.30 to the country’s GDP per hour worked, countering claims that Americans are the most productive workers in the world. America put in more hours—33.6 per week on average—than all four of the European countries with higher productivity rankings.

the united states worldwide is not on the top GDP-wise. it ranks fifth, according to the OECD. America put in more hours 33.6 some per week on average. productivity is calculated by dividing each country's GDP by the average number of hours worked annually by all employed citizens. Which is in short methodology.

Nach Rügen der Europäischen Union hat Luxemburg ein mögliches Steuerschlupfloch für Großkonzerne gestopft. Somit könnten Gewinne aus internen Finanzdienstleistungen künftig höher besteuert werden. Die Änderung sei Ergebnis eines konstruktiven Dialogs mit Brüssel, teilte Luxemburgs Finanzminister Pierre Gramegna am Dienstag mit. EU-Wettbewerbskommissarin Margrethe Vestager lobte die Korrektur, die ab 1. Januar 2017 gelten soll.

Vestager hatte Luxemburg nach dem Luxleaks-Skandal um lukrative Steuerdeals für Unternehmen im Großherzogtum mehrfach ins Visier genommen. Im Oktober 2015 prangerte sie Steuervorteile für die Fiat-Tochter Finance and Trade an, mit denen der italienische Konzern seit 2012 bis zu 30 Millionen Euro gespart haben soll. Diese Vergünstigung wäre nach den nun geänderten Regeln nicht mehr möglich, hieß es.

Le SNJ, en collaboration avec le SCRIPT et LIST (Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology), a invité le 19 et 20 décembre 2016 à la première édition du « BEE CREATIVE Makerfest » au Forum Geesseknäppchen.

L’événement a rassemblé plus de 1200 jeunes visiteurs venus des maisons relais, des écoles fondamentales et des lycées ainsi que de nombreux enseignants, professionnels et familles intéressées aux nouvelles technologies. Une trentaine d’ateliers pratiques leur ont permis de découvrir les nouvelles technologies de façon ludique et instructive. L’impression 3D, l’utilisation d’un drone, la construction d’un robot ou encore la réalisation d’un « Rudolphe » (le renne au nez rouge électronique) n’en étaient que quelques-uns. À côté des makerspaces Base1 (SNJ), Ecole Privé Sainte-Anne (EPSA), Lycée des Arts et Métiers (LAM), Lycée Technique d’Esch-sur-Alzette (LTE), Lycée Technique Privé Emile Metz (LTPME) et Schengenlycée (SLP), plusieurs partenaires ont contribué au succès énorme de cette première édition. Entre eux le « Luxembourg Science Center », Pins asbl, le musée Henri Tudor, Digital Lëtzebuerg, Jeunes Scientifiques, FANUC, Code Club Luxembourg, MICSE, Syn2cat et BEE SECURE.

Inauguration of the European Commission's new Datacentre in Luxembourg

Today the European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society Günther H. Oettinger, Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel and Minister for Home Affairs Dan Kersch inaugurate the European Commission's new Datacentre in Betzdorf, Luxembourg.

‘Thanks to a fruitful collaboration with the Luxembourg authorities, the Commission is today opening a world class datacentre to ensure its IT infrastructure which is operating EU and pan-European Information systems, is modern, reliable and cost-efficient’ Commissioner Oettinger said.

The Datacentre will be housing more than 1400 information systems such as pan-European systems supporting the Single Market, climate policy, health and food safety or structural funds. It will also house internal systems, which help run the Commission’s administration, such as its financial and HR systems.

The Betzdorf datacentre will be a datacentre of the future enhanced by cloud services and which is energy efficient, flexible, agile and secure at the same time. The move to the Betzdorf datacentre completes the Commission’s move out of the old Jean Monnet building where asbestos had been detected in 2014.

The Legatum Institute, a London-based research institute released its 10th annual global Prosperity Index in November, a huge survey that ranks the most prosperous countries in the world.

The organisation compares 104 variables to come up with its list, splitting those variables into nine subindexes. One of the big components of the ranking is how healthy a country's people are.

1. Luxembourg — Nestled between Belgium, France, and Germany, the wealthy nation of Luxembourg tops the Legatum Institute's health sub-index. The country's average life expectancy is 82.

Cloud strategy obviates the need for users to invest in their own expensive infrastructures, which would require maintenance and security measures. Which means it will provide the administrations with access to a large catalogue of solutions, both for their own requirements and for services provided to the population.

It makes sense that America, being the wealthiest country on Earth having many cities on the highest cost of living list, but not when you break down what's actually being owned and wages adding into the mix. With the top 1% owning over 90% of our wealth, the disparage is frightening and telling of how the rich seem to get richer, with simply no repercussions for abusing the working class.

This initiative aims at gathering all the startups awards organisers across Europe under the umbrella of the StartUp Europe Awards Alliance.
