C'est une révolution pour le secteur spatial, doublée d'un coup de projecteur, encore, sur le Luxembourg. Lundi, le Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) et la société Gradel ont scellé un partenariat qui donne naissance, à Hautcharage, à un laboratoire inédit associant chercheurs et ingénieurs des deux structures. L'objectif est simple, développer une technologie pour créer, à l'avenir, des satellites (entre autres) avec des composants ultralégers. Car l'une des clés du développement de l'industrie spatiale réside dans le poids des matériaux utilisés, essentiellement métalliques à l'heure actuelle.

Aujourd'hui, un kilo envoyé dans l'espace coûte de 5 000 à 10 000 euros. La technologie développée au Luxembourg permettra de réduire ce poids, et donc proportionnellement les coûts, «jusqu'à 75%». Comment? Grâce à un système de tissage à base de fibres de carbone ou d'autres matières naturelles, configuré de façon digitale et ultraprécise, puis reproduit à la main ou via un bras robotique unique lorsqu'il s'agira de produire en série. Les géants français Airbus et Thales, mais aussi l'Allemand OHB, ont déjà montré leur intérêt et scellé un contrat exclusif avec le Luxembourg.

Advanced Materials are among the important Key Enabling Technologies (KET), which are critical drivers and accelerators to allow European industries to retain competitiveness. With fascinating chemical and physical properties, new advanced materials have the potential to introduce new functionalities and improved properties to new products. As an example, advanced materials are the basis of sensors, which are ubiquitous in our modern society, more broadly speaking, of the Internet of Things.

Both, the University of Luxembourg and the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), have an internationally recognised expertise in Materials Science, which is today one of the fields of excellence of Luxembourg’s research and technology. Based on this, the two main actors of public Research in Luxembourg have decided to join forces to take full advantage of their complementary expertise by creating Luxembourg’s first interinstitutional research group (IRG): Multifunctional Ferroic Materials. The IRG is one of the instruments of the recently signed bilateral agreement between the University and LIST to foster synergistic collaborations in research and education, namely doctoral education.

The mission of this IRG is to conduct cutting-edge research on multifunctional ferroic materials, which present multiple physical properties such as magnetism, ferroelectricity or ferroelasticity. Because of their many interesting properties, multifunctional ferroic materials are considered to be ‘smart’ materials. The IRG has a particular interest in understanding the interplay of such different physical properties in smart materials. As a matter of fact, the interactions - called coupling - between multiple properties are the very basis of modern transducers, devices that convert energy from one form into another.

On Wednesday 20 January 2021, Luxembourg's Ministry of Energy and Spatial Planning and Ministry of Mobility and Public Works inaugurated the first of 88 ultra-fast electric vehicle charging stations, known as "SuperChargy".

Present at the inauguration were Luxembourg's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Mobility and Public Works, François Bausch, the Minister of Energy, Claude Turmes, and the Director General of Creos Luxembourg, Marc Reiffers. Ensured by the distribution network operator, Creos, 88 ultra-fast charging stations (160-320 kW) intended for 100% electric cars are being deployed gradually until 2023.

Distributed throughout the national territory, nineteen ultra-fast charging stations will be installed on the service areas of the motorways and on the other main axes of the country. The first two SuperChargy terminals have been operational since Wednesday 20 January 2021 at the University of Luxembourg Kirchberg campus car park.

Alors que l'arrivée de la 5G est sur toutes les lèvres ces derniers mois, au Luxembourg et dans les régions limitrophes, le ministère de l'Économie a présenté, ce lundi 21 décembre en milieu d'après-midi, «des premiers projets publics en matière de 5G».

Selon le Service des médias et des communications (SMC), ces projets, qui bénéficieront d'un cofinancement public» ont pour ambition d'apporter «une importante plus-value socio-économique» et de «collecter des données sur les ondes électromagnétiques».

Et le ministère de l'Économie ne compte visiblement pas perdre de temps, car cinq projets vont déjà se concrétiser dans les prochains jours, dès le mois de janvier 2021.

Claude Haagen (LSAP) stellte in der Chambersitzung vom Donnerstag zwei Gesetzesprojekte zu Aktivitäten im Weltall vor. Der Weltraumsektor mache in Luxemburg 500 Arbeitsplätze respektive vier Prozent des BIP aus. In den vergangenen Jahren habe eine Diversifizierung eingesetzt, die einen klarer definierten gesetzlichen Rahmen nötig mache. Künftig müssen Unternehmen, die sich in diesem Bereich hierzulande ansiedeln wollen, eine zentralisierte Autorisierungsprozedur durchlaufen und es wird ein nationales Register für alle Objekte, die ins All geschossen werden, geschaffen.

Vertreter fast aller Parteien unterstrichen die wachsende Bedeutung des Weltraumsektors. Fundamentale Kritik kam lediglich von Marc Baum (Déi Lénk), der die Privatisierung anprangerte die Kommerzialisierung von Ressourcen an. Die beiden Texte wurden mit breiter Mehrheit angenommen.

Die Arbeit hat sich gelohnt und das große Ziel wurde erreicht. Gestern teilte das Raumentwicklungssyndikat Pro-SUD mit, dass die Bewerbung der „Minette“ um den Status einer UNESCO-Biosphäre positiv beurteilt wurde: „Die (…) UNESCO hat heute, am 28. Oktober 2020, bei der 32. Sitzung des Internationalen Koordinierungsrates des Programms „Der Mensch und die Biosphäre“ (MAB) eine befürwortende Stellungnahme zur Bewerbung „Minett UNESCO Biosphere“ der elf Gemeinden des Gemeindesyndikats PRO-SUD im Rahmen des Programms MAB „Man and the Biosphere“ abgegeben.“ Die Einzigartigkeit der Kulturlandschaft „Minette“, einer Symbiose aus Spuren des Bergbaus, Denkmälern der Montanindustrie und von der Natur zurückeroberter Industrielandschaft, wurde damit von der UNESCO als einzigartig erkannt.

Den im deutschen Sprachgebrauch üblichen Begriff „Biosphärenreservat“ hört man im Süden und bei der Luxemburger UNESCO-Vertretung gar nicht gerne. Wobei der Begriff „Reservat“ nur die Fläche des UNESCO-Gebietes abgrenzt und keineswegs eine „Käseglocke“ für die Landschaft bedeutet, aber es klingt komisch. Bei PRO-SUD spricht man von UNESCO-Biosphäre oder vom UNESCO-Programm „Man and Biosphere“.

Weltweit nur wenige UNESCO-Biosphären
Die Auszeichnung mit dem UNESCO-Label „Biosphäre“ ist keine Banalität. Weltweit tragen nur etwas mehr als 680 Gebiete (Stand 2019) dieses Label von höchstem Rang. Nach der nun erfolgten Aufnahme neuer Gebiete in die Liste werden es jetzt um die 700 weltweit sein.

Nicht weniger als 165.000 Lastkraftwagen steuern jedes Jahr auf ihrem Weg nach Frankreich die Raststätte mit ARAL-Tankstelle an der A3 in Höhe von Berchem an.

In der Vergangenheit war der Parkplatz für schwere Lastwagen am Wochenende oft überfüllt. Dies führte dazu, dass sich die Lastzüge vor der Einfahrt zur Tankstelle, auf den Parkplätzen für Pkw und andere Fahrzeuge breit machten und auf den Ein- und Auffahrten zur Raststätte stauten. Daraus ergaben sich gefährliche Situationen, die zu Unfällen, Polizeikontrollen und sogar zur vorübergehenden Schließung der Raststätte führten.

Um den Raum für die parkenden Lkw auf dem Rastplatz zu optimieren, musste man auf eine intelligente computergestützte Parkraumbewirtschaftung zurückgreifen. Aufgrund der Computersteuerung konnte die Anzahl der Lkw-Parkplätze erhöht werden, ohne die Parkfläche zu vergrößern.
