Das Projekt gilt für den Internet-Giganten als äußerst wichtig: Google will im luxemburgischen Bissen ein neues Rechenzentrum aus dem Boden stampfen. Nun gab die Regierung offenbar grünes Licht für den Milliarden-Bau auf der grünen Wiese.
Es sei eine Einigung mit einem Grundstückseigentümer gefunden worden, meldet die Website rtl.lu. Dieser hatte das Projekt auf einer Fläche zwischen 25 und 30 Hektar bis zuletzt blockiert, weil er sein 1,8 Hektar großes Grundstück nicht verkaufen wollte. Letztlich ließ sich der Grundstücksbesitzer jedoch vom Wirtschaftsministerium und dem «Office National de Remembrement» überzeugen, schreibt rtl.lu. Alle Hürden sind damit aber noch nicht aus dem Weg geräumt. Im Juli hieß es bei einer Sitzung in der Chamber, dass es etwa bei der Umwidmung der Grundstücke – die Fläche ist derzeit als Grünland ausgewiesen – Probleme geben könnte. The Cybersecurity Competence Centre (C3) is to be located on Bld d'Avranches in Luxembourg city centre when SECURITYMADEIN.LU moves into its new offices from 1 Septemer 2017 . Formerly known as the Cybersecurity Expertise Centre when announced last October by Luxembourg's Secretary of State for Economy, Francine Closener, at Luxembourg’s first Cybersecurity Day hosted by PwC, the Cybersecurity Competence Centre will be based in part on the knowledge, experience and skills attained by governmental initiatives such as CASES (the promotion of IT security in businesses) and CIRCL (post-incident coordination and action services). Die Chamber hat am Donnerstag fast einstimmig ein Gesetz zum Bergbau im Weltraum verabschiedet. Damit will die Regierung den Abbau von wertvollen Rohstoffen auf Asteroiden und anderen Himmelskörpern regeln. Das neue Gesetz tritt am 1. August in Kraft. Luxemburg ist damit das erste europäische Land mit einem Rechtsrahmen, der Unternehmen gemäß internationalem Recht den Anspruch auf im Weltraum gewonnene Ressourcen garantiert.
Zuvor hatten 2015 die USA ein ähnliches Gesetz für ihre Bürger verabschiedet. Das luxemburgische Wirtschaftsministerium stellte Ende 2016 klar, dass das neue Gesetz nicht das Eigentum an Himmelskörpern regeln soll, sondern lediglich das Eigentum an dort abgebauten Materialien. Die Zahl der Ausländer in Luxemburg ist so hoch wie noch nie zuvor. Am 1. Januar 2017 wurden 590.667 Menschen in Luxemburg gezählt. Rund 170 Nationen tummeln sich im Land. Das wirkt sich natürlich auch auf den Ausländeranteil aus. Der lag Anfang des Jahres bei 48 Prozent. In Zahlen sind das 281.497 Menschen. Das geht aus einem Bericht des Statec im Juni hervor. Am Montag legten die Statistiker mit aktuellen Zahlen aus den Gemeinden nach.
In elf Gemeinden leben sogar inzwischen mehr ausländische Mitbürger als Luxemburger. So macht der Ausländeranteil in der Stadt bei einer Einwohnerzahl von 114.303 rund 71 Prozent aus. In Strassen sind es rund 62 Prozent, gefolgt von Hesperingen mit 54 Prozent, Bartringen mit ebenfalls 54 Prozent und Walferdingen mit etwas mehr als 53 Prozent.
In Esch/Alzette leben 34.378 Menschen. Davon machen die ausländischen Mitbürger etwas mehr als 57 Prozent der Einwohner aus. Innerhalb eines Jahres ist die Zahl der Einwohner in Luxemburg um über 14.000 angewachsen. Am 1. Januar 2017 leben 590.667 Menschen im Großherzogtum. Insgesamt setzt sich die Bevölkerung im Großherzogtum aus 47,7 Prozent Ausländern und 52,3 Prozent Luxemburgern zusammen. Im Vorjahr lag der Ausländeranteil bei 46,7 Prozent. Les perspectives de croissance pour le Luxembourg s'améliorent, à en croire le Fonds monétaire international (FMI). Dans ses nouvelles prévisions de croissance, l'institution basée à Washington table sur une croissance du PIB luxembourgeois de 3,7% en 2017, contre 3,5% lors de ses précédentes analyses. Le FMI prévoit une inflation certes supérieure aux années précédentes mais relativement modérée, à 1,4%. The Legatum Institute, a London-based research institute released its 10th annual global Prosperity Index in November, a huge survey that ranks the most prosperous countries in the world. The organisation compares 104 variables to come up with its list, splitting those variables into nine subindexes. One of the big components of the ranking is how healthy a country's people are. 1. Luxembourg — Nestled between Belgium, France, and Germany, the wealthy nation of Luxembourg tops the Legatum Institute's health sub-index. Auch in Luxemburg wird über Stickoxid-Belastung diskutiert. Die Werte hierzulande sind allerdings bei Weitem nicht so alarmierend wie in den Städten unserer Nachbarländer. Wie Umweltministerin Carole Dieschbourg (“déi gréng”) erklärt, ist die Belastung je nach betroffenem Ort in den letzten Jahren nur 1 bis 18 Tage lang über die Norm gestiegen. Laut EU-Regelung dürfen die Werte maximal 35 Tage lang zu hoch sein. Alles was darüber hinausgeht, ist gesundheitsgefährdend.
Die betroffenen Ortschaften
Trotzdem sollte man die Stickoxide nicht unterschätzen. Sie müssen im Auge behalten werden. Laut Umweltministerium gibt es einige Ortschaften, bei denen Überschreitungen der Werte zu befürchten sind. Betroffen seien laut Dieschbourg im Zentrum Luxemburg-Stadt und Walferdingen, im Süden Niederkerschen, Differdingen, Niederkorn, Esch/Alzette, Petingen, Tetingen und Kayl, im Osten Remich, Wasserbillig und Mertert und im Norden Diekirch und Ettelbrück.
In diesen Orten seien die Werte vor allem wegen des vielen Vekehrs besorgniserregend. Er macht immerhin 81 Prozent der Stickoxid-Belastung in der Luft aus. Der sozio-ökonomische Index ermittelt soziale und wirtschaftliche Ungleichheiten in den Gemeinden. Erstellt wird er vom Statec unter Berücksichtigung von fünf Variablen (siehe Kasten). Der Index-Wert variiert zwischen 0 und 1, wobei 0 der stärkste und 1 der schwächste Wert ist.
Die Statistik-Behörde kommt zu dem Schluss, dass sowohl die Minette-Region als auch der Nordosten und der äußerste Norden zu den strukturschwächsten Regionen in Luxemburg zählen. Die schwächsten Werte wurden für Wiltz (0,8997), Esch/Alzette (0,8898), Differdingen (0,8737), Ettelbrück (0,8558) und Vianden (0,8247) ermittelt. Doch auch Reisdorf, Echternach, Rümelingen und Petingen schneiden schlecht ab.
Die stärksten Gemeinden liegen erwartungsgemäß im Speckgürtel der Hauptstadt – die mit einem Wert von 0,4 selbst nur im Mittelfeld landet. Von allen Städten schneidet Luxemburg noch am besten ab, alle anderen liegen jenseits von 0,6 Punkten. Auch wenn die ersten Plätze von kleineren Ortschaften wie Weiler-la-Tour (0,1230), Garnich (0,1370), Reckingen/Mess (0,1774), Niederanven (0,1776) und Contern (0,1874) belegt werden, weisen nur wenige Gemeinden im Zentrum einen Wert von über 0,3 auf. Spürbarer Fachkräftemangel
Während europaweit der Anteil von Firmen, die Schwierigkeiten haben, ICT-Stellen zu besetzen, bei 41 Prozent liegt, sind es in Luxemburg 61 Prozent der Unternehmen, die ICT-Personal benötigen, aber nur schwer welches findet. Europaweit beschäftigten 2016 eines von fünf Unternehmen Fachpersonal in diesem Bereich. Der EU-weite Durchschnitt von ICT-Fachleuten lag bei 3,7 Prozent an der Gesamtbeschäftigtenzahl. In Finnland waren es fast sieben, in Schweden mehr als sechs und in Estland mehr als fünf Prozent. In Luxemburg sind es 4,1 Prozent (2011 waren es 4,3 Prozent). Das hat auch die Politik in Luxemburg erkannt und 2014 die „Digital Lëtzebuerg“-Initiative ins Leben gerufen, wozu der Ausbau der ICT-Infrastruktur genauso gehört wie die Entwicklung und Förderung von digitalen Fertigkeiten vor allem des Nachwuchses. So hat die Initiative Projekte wie „Bee Creative“, „Digital4Education“ und „Girls in ICT“ gestartet, auch das „Luxembourg House of Financial Technology“ gehört dazu, schließlich soll der Finanzplatz mit der Entwicklung mithalten. La loi instaurant le programme d’éducation plurilingue dans les services d’éducation et d’accueil de la petite enfance (1 à 4 ans) a été votée par la Chambre des députés le 11 juillet 2017. L’entrée en vigueur est prévue pour octobre 2017.
Basé sur des connaissances scientifiques, le programme d’éducation plurilingue met les petits enfants en contact avec les langues du pays et du système éducatif, notamment le luxembourgeois et le français, et valorise la diversité de langues parlées en milieu familial. Les enfants en bas âge sont en effet d’apprendre plusieurs langues, de manière intuitive et naturelle. Ils acquièrent également une plus grande aisance par rapport à l’apprentissage des langues en général, un avantage dont ils bénéficieront tout au long de leur vie. The European Commission has published its 2017 edition of the European Innovation Scoreboard; overall, the European Union's innovation performance improved further, partially catching up with the United States and Canada.
Luxembourg ranks 8th, well above the European average. Luxembourg is described as a "strong innovator". Thus, innovation performance improved by 1.4% compared to 2010. The European Commission particularly mentions the attractiveness of the Luxembourg research system, calling it the European leader. Luxembourg was singled out as a leader in "attractive research systems and registration of intellectual assets".

Luxembourg's population is growing continuously and almost reached 600,000 residents in 2016, the exact figure being 590,667 on January 1, 2017.
Luxembourg's statistics office STATEC released this number and others on Friday, based on data from the national registry for physical persons.
Like in previous years, Luxembourg's population growth is largely caused by immigration rather than by Luxembourgers themselves. Luxembourg is in a particularly good position to lead this global effort because it is a prosperous nation with an extensive space heritage, dating back to 1985 when the government helped form SES, Europe’s first private satellite operator, said Pete Worden, the former NASA Ames Director who chairs the Breakthrough Prize Foundation.
Luxembourg also attracts less suspicion than a superpower would if it called for revision of the Outer Space Treaty. With its 1,000-person military force, it is “unlikely that Luxembourg is going to be regarded as a threat to anybody,” Worden, a member of the SpaceResources.lu advisory board, said during the April 12 panel discussion.
Worden said he is honored to advise the board because mining space resources are essential to “human expansion into the solar system.” Asteroids could become an important source of water to support life and provide fuel for exploration missions. In addition, asteroid metals could help pay for further exploration because they are valuable.
“It is easy to calculate that even a relatively small metal asteroid has enough platinum group metals to be worth — and I use a very technical term — a bazillion dollars or Euros,” Worden said. “I don’t know what the exchange rate is right now, but they are roughly similar. That’s why investment in Luxembourg is a good deal right now for Americans.”

People in Luxembourg have the largest holiday budget in Europe and go away more often than those living in bordering countries.
Almost all spend their holiday abroad, mainly in Europe, and leave with a healthy budget of more than 2,800 euros each every year.
This is according to a Statec survey based on figures from 2015.
People from Luxembourg have an average annual holiday budget of 2,814 euros per person, topping the leader board ahead of Denmark and Finland and creating a near 1,000 euro gap with France, which has a 1,827 euro budget, Germany at 1,669 and Belgium at 1,327 euros per traveller.

On 1 February 2017, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Economy, Etienne Schneider presented the first accredited certification body and first certified service provided in electronic archiving.
Currently, Luxembourg is the only country in the European Union with an operational legal framework for electronic archiving. Consistent with the Digital Lëtzebuerg initiative, the current legislation recognizes in particular the legal value of digital documents and, under certain conditions, offers important guarantees as to their conformity with the original. In addition, this legislation provides for a new statute called 'dematerialisation or conservation service provider' (CSDP) for companies active in the field of electronic archiving.
Yesterday, Minister Schneider attended the accreditation by the ILNAS (Institut Luxembourgeois de la Normalisation, de l'Accréditation, de la Sécurité) of PECB Europe as the first certifying body for electronic archiving in Luxembourg and the certification of LabGroup Luxembourg as the leading provider of dematerialisation or conservation services (CSDP). Professor Alexandre Tkatchenko from the Physics and Materials Science Research Unit of the University of Luxembourg won a highly esteemed “Consolidator Grant” awarded by the European Research Council (ERC). Tkatchenko investigates the interactions between molecules, which determine the properties and behavior of materials. He will receive about 1.8 million euros funding over five years for his research project “Beyond Static Molecules: Modeling Quantum Fluctuations in Complex Molecular Environments” (BeStMo).
