Foreign-born population in 2023
On 1 January 2023, more than half (50.4%) of the population in Luxembourg was foreign-born. Malta (28.3%) and Cyprus (22.7%) completed the top 3 EU countries with the highest shares of foreign-born population.

The national statistics institute STATEC has presented the first results of Luxembourg's 37th population census, conducted between 8 November and 5 December 2021.

Compared to the last census in 2011 (512,353 residents), Luxembourg witnessed a population increase of 25.7% (i.e. 131,588 people), reaching 643,941 residents. This was fifteen times higher than that of the European Union (EU-27), which experienced growth of 1.7% during the same period.

On the occasion of International Day for Older Persons 2019 (1 October), Statec has gathered statistics on people aged 60 and over; a report by the national statistical agency has revealed that people aged 60 and over represent 19.8% of the total population in Luxembourg.

As of 1 January 2019, Luxembourg was home to 121,759 people aged 60 and over, thus representing 19.8% of the total population. The oldest person at the time was an 111-year-old man. Similarly, on 1 January, an older woman celebrated her 110th birthday.

Luxembourg's population is growing continuously and almost reached 600,000 residents in 2016, the exact figure being 590,667 on January 1, 2017.

Luxembourg's statistics office STATEC released this number and others on Friday, based on data from the national registry for physical persons.

Like in previous years, Luxembourg's population growth is largely caused by immigration rather than by Luxembourgers themselves. The part of the population without Luxembourg nationality is close to 48%.

Innerhalb eines Jahres ist die Zahl der Einwohner in Luxemburg um über 14.000 angewachsen. Am 1. Januar 2017 leben 590.667 Menschen im Großherzogtum.

Insgesamt setzt sich die Bevölkerung im Großherzogtum aus 47,7 Prozent Ausländern und 52,3 Prozent Luxemburgern zusammen. Im Vorjahr lag der Ausländeranteil bei 46,7 Prozent.

Les résultats du dernier recensement de la population montrent que le Luxembourg dispose d’un dynamisme démographique exceptionnel au sein de l’Union européenne, avec une croissance de 25,7% de sa population en dix ans pour atteindre 643.941 personnes en novembre 2021.

La population résidente du Grand-Duché continue de croître pour se rapprocher du seuil symbolique des 600.000 résidents, selon les données du Statec, publiées vendredi. Au 1er janvier, près de la moitié des résidents (48%) ne possédaient pas la nationalité luxembourgeoise.
