La famille MeluXina s’agrandit et le Luxembourg confirme sa position et ses ambitions dans le domaine des nouvelles technologies, de l’intelligence artificielle (IA) en particulier.

En effet, alors que le Grand-Duché dispose déjà sur son territoire du supercalculateur MeluXina, et que le projet d’ordinateur quantique MeluXina-Q a été dévoilé en octobre, un consortium national a été sélectionné pour acquérir et accueillir un nouveau supercalculateur optimisé pour l’intelligence artificielle (IA), baptisé MeluXina-AI, et établir une AI Factory (usine d’IA) associée.

Juste avant 15h ce lundi, le Grand-Duc Henri a appuyé sur le gros bouton rouge, dans les locaux d’IEE à Bissen, pour marquer le lancement de Meluxina, le HPC du Luxembourg. L’infrastructure de 30,4 millions d’euros est née d’une volonté politique exprimée il y a cinq ans.

«Meluxina va pouvoir commencer à nager.» Le Premier ministre, Xavier Bettel (DP), lâche un petit éclat de rire très bref, assumant la référence du nom du HPC à l’histoire de l’origine du Luxembourg et de l’amour entre le comte Siegfried de Luxembourg et la sirène Mélusine. Dans les locaux d’IEE, ce lundi, le chef du gouvernement se félicite de «l’accomplissement d’une tâche que nous nous étions tous donnée il y a trois ans. Mission accomplie!»

L’occasion est belle pour le Premier ministre de rappeler qu’une fois encore, le Luxembourg en profite pour se renouveler, comme il a su le faire après la sidérurgie, après le développement des services financiers et après «l’extraction dans l’espace».

Le Premier ministre et le ministre de l'Economie ont annoncé, mardi, l'acquisition de Meluxina. D'une puissance de dix pétaflops, l'appareil sera dédié à la recherche, la médecine personnalisée et aux projets eHealth. Mais il vise surtout à intégrer le pays dans le réseau européen des supercalculateurs.
(ASdN) - Le Luxembourg mise sur le digital et s'en donne les moyens. Le gouvernement a ainsi annoncé acquérir, ce mardi, un superordinateur pour la modique somme de 30,4 millions d'euros. Baptisée Meluxina, la machine sera inaugurée au printemps 2021 et sera hébergée dans le data center de LuxConnect, à Bissen. 

Alimenté exclusivement par de l'énergie verte, l'engin sera particulièrement puissant, doté d'une puissance de dix pétaflops. Plus concrètement, cela signifie qu'il sera capable de calculer vite, et même très vite. A raison de plusieurs milliards d'opérations à la seconde!

Zehn Petaflops Rechenleistung wird "Meluxina" bieten, wie der neue luxemburgische Hochleistungsrechner vom Betreiber Luxconnect getauft wurde. Das sind zehn Millionen Milliarden oder 10 hoch 18 Rechenoperationen pro Sekunde, was den rund 30 Millionen Euro teuren Supercomputer weltweit auf Rang 22 rangieren lässt.

"Es handelt sich um ein Schlüsselelement unserer Bemühungen im Rahmen der Rifkin-Strategie, die ja einen Ausbau der Informationstechnologien vorsieht mit dem Ziel, eine nachhaltige Wirtschaft zu schaffen", so Wirtschaftsminister Etienne Schneider bei der Vorstellung des Projekts. Rund dein Drittel der Anschaffungskosten werden von der EU beigesteuert, da das Projekt sich in die europäische Hochleistungsrechner-Initiative EuroHPC eingliedert, die ihren Sitz ebenfalls in Luxemburg gefunden hat. Die europäische Strategie verfolgt vorrangig das Ziel, Europa mit vergleichbaren Rechenkapazitäten auszustatten, wie jene der großen Rivalen USA, China oder Japan.

Die Liste der Anwendungen eines derart leistungsfähigen Rechners sei schier endlos, wie der bei der Vorstellung anwesende Leiter der Generaldirektion EU-Generaldirektion Kommunikationsnetze, Inhalte und Technologien, Khalil Rouhana, unterstrich: "Die Anwendungen reichen von Simulationen oder Modellrechnungen und künstlicher Intelligenz in der Industrie, der Forschung und Wissenschaft, dem Gesundheitssektor, bis hin zu Entwicklungen in Startups und KMUs oder dem Finanzsektor". Rechner auf diesem Leistungsniveau seien bisher Mangelware in Europa gewesen, so dass bisher viele Institutionen und Unternehmen auf ausländische Kapazitäten hätten zugreifen müssen.

Supercomputer, Quantencomputer – und jetzt auch eine KI-Fabrik: Der Standort von LuxProvide in Bissen mausert sich zum führenden Zentrum im Bereich künstliche Intelligenz.

Es geht um sehr viel Geld – und eine zukunftsweisende Technologie: In Luxemburg soll eine der ersten KI-Fabriken Europas errichtet werden. Die EU-Behörde „European High Performance Computing“ (EuroHPC) hat „Meluxina-AI“ von LuxProvide in Bissen als einen von sieben Standorten ausgewählt, „um fortschrittliche KI-Modelle zu trainieren und KI-Lösungen zu entwickeln“, wie es in einem Presseschreiben am Dienstag heißt.

Luxembourg’s new supercomputer, MeluXina, was launched on 7 June as part of the country’s data-driven innovation strategy, addressing the needs of companies, start-ups as well as public and research institutions.

Several research projects have been granted early access to MeluXina to perform large-scale experiments and test their software on the system.

The procurement contract of MeluXina, new EuroHPC supercomputer, has been signed by the European High Performance Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU), LuxProvide, the hosting entity, and the company Atos, the selected vendor.

Luxconnect a accepté d’ouvrir ses portes à Paperjam. C’est dans une de ses salles que sera accueilli Meluxina, le supercalculateur luxembourgeois, d’ici un an. Reportage vidéo.

Chez Luxconnect à Bissen, il faut montrer patte blanche et respecter strictement toutes les procédures. À l’intérieur, les installations sont occupées à 70%. Des clients hébergent leurs données, l’or noir moderne, dans des salles auxquelles même les 20 employés de la société n’ont pas accès, sauf en cas d’urgence absolue.

Une salle blanche encore vide attend Meluxina, le supercalculateur (ou «high performance computer» – HPC) à 30 millions d’euros, qu’il faudra avoir amorti en cinq ans.

Un outil indispensable  pour le futur du Luxembourg , en particulier sur le plan économique. Il s’inscrit dans le cadre  d’un projet européen de mise en réseau  d’infrastructures de haut calcul informatique pour des applications dans la recherche ou encore l’intelligence artificielle.

Ouverture prévue en 2020.

On Friday 14 June 2019, Luxembourg's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Economy, Étienne Schneider, together with the Deputy Director General of the Directorate General of Communication Networks, Content and Technologies (DG CNECT) at the European Commission, Khalil Rouhana, as well as LuxConnect CEO, Roger Lampach, presented the future Luxembourg supercomputer, named "Meluxina", which will join the European network of EuroHPC supercomputers.

The EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, headquartered in the Grand Duchy, is an initiative co-financed by the European Commission and 28 countries, including Luxembourg, which aims to provide Europe with an ecosystem and a computing infrastructure. By June 2019, following a call for projecta, EuroHPC selected eight sites in different Member States to host supercomputers. The Luxembourg project to install the petascale supercomputer Meluxina at LuxConnect in Bissen has been selected. Luxembourg will thus obtain European co-financing for the realisation of its own high performing computer (HPC) which will integrate into the European network of supercomputers.
