During the 2023 edition of the CES, the Consumer Technology Association (CTA)® has released the second edition of its International Innovation Scorecard, an assessment of policies and practices around the world that fuel tech innovation or stand in the way of progress.  

Luxembourg, and 23 other countries, earned the highest ranking of “Innovation Champion”, rewarding nations that “embrace policies that unleash innovation and empower diverse communities to bring new technologies to life and to market, improving the lives of millions” according to Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of CTA.

The Scorecard measures 40 indicators across 17 categories, including tax friendliness, environmental quality, trade policy, broadband access, and cybersecurity. The 2023 edition expanded to include nine additional countries, assessing a total of 70 nations spanning the globe, including all members of the EU and G20.

Ein schönes Geschenk für unseren Nationalfeiertag: in dem gestern veröffentlichten EU Innovation Scoreboard wird Luxemburg wieder als führend in der Innovation bezeichnet. Damit gehört es neben Schweden, Finnland, den Niederlanden und Dänemark zu den Ländern in der EU, die laut aktuellem European Scoreboard als „Innovation Leaders“ klassifiziert werden.

Who is winning the innovation race?

I am the director of the Center for Global Innovation Studies at Toyo University. The Center recently published a Global Innovation Index, ranking the innovation performance of each country. The index was created by selecting and integrating a total of 58 indexes for comparison from five main fields: international cooperation, market trends, technological innovation, resourcefulness and relevant policies. Statistics related to these indexes are available for 60 countries, so these countries were ranked.

Luxembourg is ranked as a ‘Strong Innovator’ in the EU Commission’s 2019 European Innovation Scoreboard. For the second year running, Luxembourg ranks 1st for ‘Attractive research systems’. This underlines the considerable development of the young Luxembourgish research and innovation ecosystem, and is an important recognition of the country’s continuous efforts to develop a world-class R&I landscape.
Considerable progress has been made in Luxembourg by successive governments leading to a doubling of investments in research, development and innovation in the last decade. The report, published Monday, 17 June, states that “Attractive research systems, Intellectual assets and Innovators are the
strongest innovation dimensions. Luxembourg scores particularly well on Foreign doctorate students, Trademark applications, and International scientific co-publications”.

The Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) has been one of the key drivers to establish Luxembourg as a leading knowledge-based society through science, research and innovation. Großherzogtum rückt in die Gruppe der Innovationsführer vor
Luxemburg zählt im neuen „Europäischen Innovationsanzeiger“ der Europäischen Kommission neben Ländern erstmals zu den „Innovationsführern“. „Dies ist ein großer Schritt für das junge luxemburgische Forschungs- und Innovationsökosystem und eine wichtige Anerkennung der kontinuierlichen Bemühungen des Landes, eine erstklassige Forschungs- und Innovationslandschaft zu entwickeln“, teilte am Freitag der nationale Forschungsfonds (FNR) mit.

Schweden und Dänemark stehen auf Platz 1 und zwei des „European Innovation Scoreboard 2018“, Luxemburg folgt vor Frankreich, Irland und Belgien auf Platz 3.

Wie die EU-Kommission darauf hinweist, wurden in Luxemburg in den letzten zehn Jahren beträchtliche Fortschritte bei der Verdopplung der Investitionen in Forschung, Entwicklung und Innovation erzielt.

Demnach war der luxemburgische nationale Forschungsfonds (FNR) einer der Schlüsselfaktoren, um Luxemburg durch Wissenschaft, Forschung und Innovation zu einer führenden wissensbasierten Gesellschaft zu machen. In den vergangenen vier Jahren habe der FNR öffentlich-private Partnerschaftsprogramme weiterentwickelt und die Budgets für Programme erhöht, die den Wissenstransfer zur erfolgreichen kommerziellen Nutzung von Forschungsfunden unterstützen, teilte der FNR dazu mit. Und weiter: „Attraktive Forschungssysteme und geistiges Eigentum sind [Luxemburgs] stärkste Innovationsdimension.“

Le Luxembourg, centre mondial de l'innovation?

LUXEMBOURG - Belval doit devenir la Silicon Valley européenne. Le Fonds national de la recherche a présenté vendredi son bilan pour 2017 et ses ambitions pour l'avenir.

Le Luxembourg doit devenir la première destination des chercheurs dans les prochaines années. Le Fonds national de recherche (FNR) reçoit davantage de fonds pour cet objectif: entre 2018 et 2021, le financement du FNR par l'État s'élève à 341 millions d'euros, contre 100 millions d'euros pour les quatre années précédentes.

En 2017, le FNR a distribué 66,2 millions d'euros pour 240 projets. Les bourses de recherche ont bénéficié aux scientifiques de l'Université de Luxembourg et à d'autres organismes de recherhce comme le List, le LIH, le LISER ou encore le Centre hospitalier de Luxembourg. Doctorants et post-docs sont également soutenus.

Die Idee ist zu gut: Altes Plastik schreddern, einen 3-D-Drucker damit füttern – und etwas ganz Neues drucken. Claude Wolf, der angehende Maschinenbau-Ingenieure an der Universität Luxemburg unterrichtet, hat sie gemeinsam mit dem Technoport FabLab und dem EcoInnovation Cluster von Luxinnovation umgesetzt, unterstützt vom „Fonds National de la Recherche“.

Vor gut einem Jahr ging das als Projekt „Fused Deposition Modeling“ (FDM) durch die Presse. Seither ist es still geworden. Warum? „Das Projekt wurde eigentlich zur Sensibilisierung der Studenten für Recycling und ‚Circular Economy‘ durchgeführt. Aber es gab auch das Ziel, die Ausbildungswege der Universität klarer und bekannter zu machen. Alle diese Ziele wurden erreicht“, meint Wolf. Er hat mit seinen Studenten sowohl den Schredder als auch den 3-D-Drucker entwickelt. „Wir haben das auf mehreren Messen und in Lyzeen gezeigt. Was wir aber sehen, ist ein echtes Interesse der Studenten, 3-D zu drucken und zu recyceln.“ Gerade die Generation Z sei interessiert an Projekten, hinter denen auch ein Sinn steht, hat er beobachtet.

Es wäre angesichts der Idee nur normal, wenn sie auch genutzt würde. Doch bislang gibt es keinen industriellen Partner. „Wir haben zu wenig Mittel und zu wenig Zeit“, bedauert Wolf, der die meiste Zeit mit dem Unterricht verbringt. Er hatte Kontakt mit dem Unternehmen Husky, das unter anderem PET-Flaschen herstellt. Husky stellt ihm verschiedene Polymere für Tests zur Verfügung. „Aber wir sind noch nicht auf industriellem Niveau“, bedauert der Wissenschaftler. Auch mit französischen Unternehmen hatte er Kontakt, ohne dass es zu einer Übernahme der Idee kam. „Dabei könnte es wirklich interessant sein“, ist Wolf überzeugt.

Deshalb hat er sowohl die Pläne für die Maschine als auch die Möglichkeiten als „Open Source“ gratis im Internet zur Verfügung gestellt. So könnte es doch noch zu einer industriellen Nutzung kommen.

Preparations are underway for the House of Start-Ups, the future home of nyuko, the Luxembourg House of Financial Technology (LHoFT) and the Luxembourg City incubator. 

Set to open its doors in the first quarter of 2018, the House of Start-Ups welcomes entrepreneurs active in a variety of sectors, from tourism and urban development, to information and communications technology, as well as fintech.

Spanning some 5,000 square meters, over four floors, the incubator for start-ups will be based inside the Dôme building on rue du Laboratoire, in Luxembourg City.

Les efforts du gouvernement dans la recherche et l’innovation ont été vivement loués par le commissaire européen Carlos Moedas, de visite ce jeudi à Luxembourg.

Lors de sa visite au Luxembourg ce jeudi, le commissaire européen à la Recherche, l’Innovation et la Science, Carlos Moedas, louait les efforts du gouvernement luxembourgeois dans la recherche et l’innovation.

Grâce à ses initiatives dans les domaines de la «troisième révolution industrielle», du space mining, du big data et de la «cybersecurity», le Luxembourg «est dans les thèmes du futur», déclarait le commissaire. Il qualifiait la stratégie de gouvernement d’«importante» en tant que contribution à la recherche dans l’Union européenne.

La Commission européenne a publié ce mardi l’édition 2017 de son tableau de bord de l’innovation. Le Grand-Duché apparaît en bonne position, en dépit de certaines faiblesses. 

La dernière version du tableau de bord de l’innovation publiée ce mardi par la Commission européenne place le Luxembourg en bonne position, dans le second peloton (celui des «innovateurs puissants»), juste derrière les sept pays considérés comme étant leaders en la matière.

PM Xavier Bettel presents new initiative aimed at giving young tech companies the opportunity to expand their international network via Vodafone.

Auch dem Minister war zunächst leicht mulmig, als man ihm anbot, einen der „Spots“ zu steuern. Nicht zuletzt, weil ein Gerät alles in allem mit rund 100.000 Euro zu Buche schlägt. Aber die Steuerung ist völlig intuitiv. Wer schon einmal einen Spielkonsolen-Controller in der Hand hatte, findet sich gleich zurecht. Der „Spot“-Controller ist natürlich größer, mit Schirm, auf dem man sehen kann, was die Kameras des Roboters gerade filmen. Und: Das Hightech-Produkt ist kein „Gimmick“, kein Spielzeug, denn es soll künftig Produktivität und Präzision am Bau deutlich erhöhen. „Spot“ kann so autonom personalintensive und zeitraubende Aufgaben wie eine Baustellenkontrolle übernehme.

Sind die Mauern gerade? Wurde korrekt gegipst? Sind die Kabel so verlegt, wie sie sollen? Alle Fenster eingesetzt? Die Steckdosen ordnungsgemäß platziert? Mit einem Rundum-Scanner versehen kann das Gerät bis auf den Millimeter genau messen, ob die ausgeführten Arbeiten auch den Plänen im „Cloud“, mit denen es die vor Ort gesammelten Informationen vergleicht,  entsprechen. Je nach erwünschtem Präsizisiongrad dauert das zwischen 20 Minuten und vier Stunden bei einem der Häuser, die Stugalux an der Baustelle in Alzingen – eine von 300 im Land – errichtet.

Laut "Digital Readiness Index" von Cisco gehört Luxemburg zur Spitzengruppe, wenn es um die Voraussetzungen für den digitalen Wandel geht.

Viele Luxemburger sehen den Fortschritt in Sachen Digitalisierung hierzulande kritisch. Eine Studie bescheinigt Luxemburg dagegen eine Spitzenposition. Das Großherzogtum erreicht im internationalen "Digital Readiness Index" des Netzwerkanbieters Cisco unter 141 Ländern Platz zwei - nur Singapur erzielt höhere Werte. Auf Luxemburg folgen die USA, Dänemark, die Schweiz, die Niederlande, Schweden und Südkorea. 

Entscheidend ist hier die Frage, was man genau unter Digitalisierung versteht. Cisco bewertet dabei die sogenannte "Digital Readiness". Damit soll abgebildet werden, wie gut ein Land auf die digitale Zukunft vorbereitet ist und inwiefern es wirtschaftlich von der Digitalisierung profitieren kann.

Monday marked the official launch of the Luxembourg Digital Innovation Hub (L-DIH), in the presence of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Economy, Étienne Schneider.

Hosted and managed by Luxinnovation, the L-DIH platform is a key element of the national strategy for a data-driven economy. It forms part of a European initiative aimed at bringing together supply and demand in the context of the digitisation of industry, in particular SMEs. The establishment of the L-DIH is the result of a partnership between the Ministry of the Economy, FEDIL, Luxinnovation, the Chamber of Commerce, the University of Luxembourg, the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) and the Fonds National de la Recherche (FNR).

Its mission of is to actively contribute to digital transformation by supporting companies in their strategic thinking and concrete actions. It will facilitate contacts between companies that need access to digitisation skills, technologies, services and support mechanisms on the one hand, and digital technology and service providers that meet the needs of industry, on the other.

THE DAILY WORK OF AN RTO #3: NEW WINDSHIELDS

The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) has published its new corporate video presentation providing its viewers with a closer look at the daily work of an RTO. In four and a half minutes, L.A.I.L.A (LIST’s Artificial Intelligence Learning Avatar) pin-points several innovative technologies or solutions developed at LIST, starting its journey at street-level before gaining height towards the stars.

LIST launches a series of short news, each representing a part of the new corporate video to be found on LIST video channel. The third issue of “The daily work of an RTO” series is focused on new windshields.

L.A.I.L.A explains:

“New windshields will prevent the glass from fogging up and heating the inside of the car. The technology is perfectly invisible and, as we speak, it’s being developed and tested at LIST.”

Le List vient de placer sur les rails Lion Nano-Systems, une spin-off chargée de commercialiser un outil d’exploration de l’infiniment petit développé par l’institut de recherche luxembourgeois.

Luxembourg Ion Optical Nano-Systems sàrl (Lion Nano-Systems), une spin-off créée en août 2017 avec le soutien du Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (List), volera désormais de ses propres ailes dans les locaux du Technoport.

Son objectif sera désormais de commercialiser le Vector 500 Sims, un outil développé au sein du List pour explorer l’infiniment petit, dont elle détient la licence commerciale après le dépôt de plusieurs brevets par le List.

Ce nouvel outil, qui combine microscope puissant et instrument d’imagerie à spectrométrie de masse à ions secondaires, permet l’analyse de surfaces avec une résolution autour de 10 nanomètres, c’est-à-dire des surfaces jusqu’à 10.000 fois plus petites que le diamètre d’un cheveu humain.

Selon le List, le Vector 500 Sims se révèle ainsi être l’outil le plus performant sur le marché pour des applications de recherche et développement dans des domaines aussi variés que les études toxicologiques sur les nanoparticules, le photovoltaïque, les semi-conducteurs, les batteries Li-ion, les aciers, la cosmétique et la médecine.

Le 18 janvier 2018, le ministre de l’Éducation nationale, de l’Enfance et de la Jeunesse, Claude Meisch, a présenté deux organes qui seront prochainement créés pour objectiver le débat sur l’éducation en lui donnant un fondement scientifique et en y associant la société civile : l’Observatoire national de la qualité scolaire et le Conseil national des programmes.

Le ministre a également lancé l’idée d’une plateforme qui associerait tous les acteurs scolaires et autres parties prenantes dans une réflexion commune. « Le débat autour de l’école est un débat de société. Il a besoin d’objectivité, de sérénité et de continuité » a expliqué Claude Meisch. Voilà pourquoi il ne doit pas relever des seuls décideurs politiques, mais d’une démarche collective qui implique et responsabilise tous les acteurs intéressés. Un tel « Lëtzebuerger Bildungsdësch » permettrait de dépolitiser la discussion autour de l’éducation et d’assurer sa continuité au fil des mandats ministériels successifs.

Un tel processus a déjà été amorcé par le ministère :

L’autonomie élargie accordée aux écoles a entraîné une nouvelle répartition des rôles et des responsabilités entre le ministère et les établissements scolaires.
Avec la mise en place d’un ensemble de mesures cohérentes, les acteurs du système scolaire se sont activement engagés dans une démarche de développement scolaire.

Des adaptations ont été ou seront prochainement faites pour renforcer le rôle des interlocuteurs représentatifs des acteurs scolaires et mieux les associer au débat sur la politique éducative.
La création prochaine d’un Observatoire national de la qualité scolaire et d’un Conseil national des programmes permettra de donner au débat un fondement scientifique et d’y associer la société civile.

L’Observatoire national de la qualité scolaire analysera régulièrement la qualité scolaire, avec l’aide d’experts scientifiques, d’instituts de recherche et d’universités, et proposera des pistes pour l’améliorer. Indépendant et neutre dans son travail, il analysera également les études nationales et internationales en matière de qualité scolaire pour situer le Luxembourg par rapport au niveau international.

Le fabricant américain de pneus devrait annoncer mardi la construction d’un bâtiment dédié à l’innovation dans le secteur de la mobilité. Le CEO du groupe, Richard Kramer, et le ministre de l’Économie, Étienne Schneider, seront présents pour la présentation de ce nouveau projet.

Dass die Luxemburger Wirtschaft und insbesondere die Industrie innovativ sind, wird kaum von jemandem bestritten. Doch am heutigen Mittwoch hat Wirtschaftsminister Etienne Schneider eine weitere große Investition in einem ganz besonderen Industriebereich vorgestellt.

Es handelt sich um das Unternehmen OCSiAI, den weltweit führenden Hersteller von Nanoröhren (englisch Nanotube) aus Kohlenstoff. Die Firma plant, rund 100 Millionen Euro in einen Produktions- und Forschungsstandort in Differdingen zu investieren. Rund 200 neue Jobs sollen entstehen. In wenigen Jahren könnte Luxemburg so zum weltweit wichtigsten Standort für die Produktion von Nanoröhren werden.

The European Commission has published its 2017 edition of the European Innovation Scoreboard; overall, the European Union's innovation performance improved further, partially catching up with the United States and Canada.

Luxembourg ranks 8th, well above the European average. Luxembourg is described as a "strong innovator". Thus, innovation performance improved by 1.4% compared to 2010. The European Commission particularly mentions the attractiveness of the Luxembourg research system, calling it the European leader. Luxembourg was singled out as a leader in "attractive research systems and registration of intellectual assets".

The University of Luxembourg and the Luxembourg Institute of Standardisation, Accreditation, Safety and Quality of Products and Services (ILNAS) strengthen their collaboration in the field of Smart ICT and standardisation. A formal signing ceremony took place on Wednesday, 17 May 2017 at the Ministry of the Economy.

Following the launch of the University Certificate “Smart ICT for business innovation” in September 2015, the creation of a new Master’s degree and the development of research activities are on the top of the agenda. The existing Certificate is aimed at experienced ICT professionals and consists in a one-year programme hosted at the University and supported by industry partners as well as European standardisation organisations. This training aims at strengthening professional skills and expertise in important aspects of Smart ICT (e.g. Cloud Computing, Internet of Things, Big Data) as well as illustrating their applications in concrete business cases. The curriculum is building on the latest technical standardisation advances that represent a key source of knowledge and support for the development of the related technical areas.
