Erythrocytes transport oxygen through the body to cells and return carbon dioxide back to the lungs for removal from the body. Red blood cell counts can reflect deficits in many different body systems. The presence of red blood cells decreases with age, and the quality and quantity of red blood cells can be indicative of systemic failures associated with multiple aging processes. This may account for why red blood cell counts are so good at predicting biological age.
