The lines of the building could be made out and there was a reference point in the form of a street lamp. Electric lighting had been introduced in Paris but was still relatively new when this painting was made.

Painters used the Chiaroscuro style (which translates to "light and shadows") so the focus of the subject could be seen even in poor lighting- which candle light often was for such huge paintings.
