Architects and local governments around the world are now fighting the good fight against dismal, uninspiring schools and the groundbreaking results are re-shaping the learning experience for our future generations. From a colorful kindergarten in Slovenia made out of toy planks that lets kids play with and manipulate their environment to a high school breeding a new generation of environmentalists, click through to check out the future of a free education. The 21st century learning spaces are based on years of research by architects, principals and education experts into the best way to design, build and fit-out schools.
To maximise the benefits of these spaces, they incorporate enhancements such as ICT, ESD features and furniture and equipment.
Hear what the architects from Gray Puksand and Hayball have to say about their experience with the design process.
Learning Space Design Summit 2011 | 5-6 December 2011 | Rendezvous Hotel Melbourne will focus on how to best integrate evolving technologies into collaborative, formal and informal learning environments within Australia's tertiary education...
Welcome to the evaluation of learning spaces project website. This is a partnership project between Swinburne University of Technology, Victoria University and University of Queensland. The project team has been chosen for their collective expertise in education and evaluation, and for their leadership roles in campus development projects in their respective institutions. The project aims to provide a framework for a full evaluation cycle, from conceptualisation and design to implementation and post-occupancy.

PM - This free downloadable PDF book was the catalyst for a change in thinking about learning environments. While not the first, it really gathered some traction within the tertiary environment in 2006. A great, worthwhile read. EVERY teaching space architect should be forced to read this book before designing a classroom or any building at an educational institution. I love the whole book, but my favourite is chapter 13, the lecture hall at LeBaron, Iowa State.
But the choice for Christchurch is whether it wants to rebuild pretty much what it had pre- earthquake or have a bunch of new schools designed for this century's learning needs, schools just completely different in concept, says ...
PM - Albany High School is an amazing facility. I did some work with their teaching team a couple of years back. Via Anne Whisken, Ezrina Fewings |
The Learning Spaces Portal is a learning common, between Deakin University's Centre for Research in Educational Futures and Innovation (CREFI) and the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD).
Anne Kenneally started the year looking at desks in rows and thought there just has got to be a better way. She has spent this year experimenting with student designed learning spaces, allowing the students to take the lead in deciding what spaces they need for different activities. In this EDtalk Anne explores the changes in her students and their learning environment.
Consultants at Learning Spaces have been designing and installing exciting and engaging learning environments for over 5 years, producing some of the most inspirational classrooms and interiors the UK education market has ever seen.
ICT enables schools to create physical and virtual learning spaces. Good design of physical learning spaces and effective use of ICT can maximise student learning. The learning environment includes:
• the physical space and furniture • the ICT available and in use • the teaching practice undertaken.
This section outlines how physical space and access device (computer) options are broadly related to teaching practice and describes different examples of ICT learning spaces.
PM - Some neat furniture and design images here! :-)

PM - I visited the SJSU Incubator classroom a few years back. A great example of how tertiary learning can be changed by changing the environment. |
