Why Learning Through Social Networks Is The Future

Why Learning Through Social Networks Is The Future | Latest Social Media News | Scoop.it

Students Need Professional Learning Networks, Too

Learning to create, manage and promote a professional learning network (PLN) will soon become, if it’s not already, one of the most necessary and sought after skills for a global citizen, and as such, must become a prominent feature of any school curriculum.

Kim Flintoff's curator insight, July 8, 2014 1:27 AM

Collaboration can be both a formal structure for learning activity but also an underpinning framework for engagement and fostering life-long learning.  Learning networks are part the new learning ecosystem and should be recognised and supported.

Dismiss ye olde newspapers if you will, but curation is one of the world's most undervalued commodities

Dismiss ye olde newspapers if you will, but curation is one of the world's most undervalued commodities | Latest Social Media News | Scoop.it
I have rehearsed this scenario before, but try to imagine we live in a world where printed media had not been invented, and our only source of information and entertainment was the Internet.

And then someone came up with a really smart idea, and gathered together a group of really clever people, got them to sift through the mass of information that's freely available in digital form, decide what's important and what's not, what you can trust and what you can't, and put it all together in a thing called a newspaper, which can be delivered to your very home.

It's portable, it's not dependent on a wireless connection and, for many, there is also an intrinsic pleasure in turning over the pages. I posit this idea not to promote the virtue of newspapers, but to illustrate my growing feeling that one of the most prized - and undervalued - commodities in the modern world is curation.

Educators as Curators: 8 Steps to Bringing Your Students the Best of the Web

Educators as Curators: 8 Steps to Bringing Your Students the Best of the Web | Latest Social Media News | Scoop.it

Last spring, Dr. Corinne Weisgerber turned her undergrads into Guggenheim-like curators. After building personal learning networks that delivered subject-specific tweets and blog posts, her students chose the most salient content and arranged it online the way a museum curator might an art exhibit. Their goal was to design a learning experience that cut through the noise to bring the Internet’s best content to others.

The project arose from Weisgerber’s own experience curating content for students, which she and her St. Edward’s University colleague Dr. Shannan Butler shared at the second annual SXSWedu conference in March.

Today, they answer questions about why they think the museum curator is the perfect model for today’s educators (and students), and how you can become one too.

4 Twitter Tools Every Teacher should Know about

4 Twitter Tools Every Teacher should Know about | Latest Social Media News | Scoop.it

Twitter is a powerful educational social networking website that has a huge potential for  teachers professional development.

Twitter is also ideal as a  PLN  where you get to connect with other educators from all around the globe and exchange teaching and learning materials with them. Building a PLN, however, requires making acquaintances with similar like-minded teachers and also developing your list of followers; but once you have such a solid PLN problems of maintaining it and staying updated with what others tweet become a tricky challenge.

I have curated for you some powerful tools to help you benefit the maximum from  the PLN you create on Twitter. Check them out below.

How to Find New Competitive Knowledge in Social Media | Latest Social Media News | Scoop.it
Buzz used to be an intangible — something you just felt. No longer.

"Buzz volume" is one of the metrics offered by a new generation of social-media-based tools that are transforming the way corporations gather intelligence about customers and competitors. "Consumer sentiment" is another: You can now get a reading on how customers are feeling about your products or services, your customer service, or your prices.
