Gold’s next chapter is about more than $5,000 - LBMA 2026 | Kitco News

Gold’s next chapter is about more than $5,000 - LBMA 2026 | Kitco News | La revue de presse CDT | Scoop.it
(Kitco News) - There is no denying that since early spring, gold has had a tough run. Rising bond yields and stubborn inflation, driving hawkish interest rate expectations, have made it difficult for the precious metal to attract any consistent momentum. However, despite the challenges, long-term sentiment has been bullish, and has never wavered. This attitude was on display this week during the London Bullion Market Association’s annual Global Precious Metals Conference in Sorrento, Italy. Delegates and the broader investment community heard a clear message: don't confuse short-term weakness with a weak long-term story. The conference delegates looking for gold prices to reach $5,000 by this time next year is an indication of just how bullish analysts are in the long term; however, it's not just the price we should be paying attention to. What stood out was the evolving role gold and precious metals continue to p[lay in the global financial system, and this evolution appears to be unfolding in a much faster and bigger way than many investors realize. For decades, gold has mainly been viewed as a hedge against inflation, currency weakness, or geopolitical turmoil. Those factors still matter, but increasingly, investors are looking at gold through a different lens. It's becoming an asset that offers protection in a world where confidence in government finances and traditional monetary systems is starting to weaken. One of the recurring themes throughout the conference was debt. Governments around the world continue to borrow heavily, and many investors are starting to question how sustainable this trend really is. Higher bond yields can create headwinds for gold in the short run, but they may also reflect growing concerns about the financial health of the governments issuing that debt.Central banks in particular appear to be taking that view seriously. Gold has always been part of reserve portfolios, but its appeal today goes beyond its traditional safe-haven status. Unlike many financial assets, gold carries no counterparty risk. It can't default, and physical holdings cannot easily be frozen or restricted by another country. In a world that is becoming more fragmented politically and economically, those characteristics matter.Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel noted that gold now accounts for nearly a quarter of global central bank reserves. While much of that increase has come from higher prices rather than new buying, the broader trend is still telling. Central banks are not simply chasing performance. They're reassessing the role gold can play in a more uncertain geopolitical environment. But it's not just demand that is evolving. The conference also looked at how technology and tokenization are creating more utility for gold as a global financial asset.Digital platforms can potentially make gold easier to trade, transfer, and use as collateral; the metal would become more accessible and useful to a wider range of investors. There are still legitimate questions around regulation, custody, and trust, but the potential is difficult to ignore. What the conference highlighted, however, is that gold's future may depend on forces much larger than the Federal Reserve's next rate decision.Investors can argue about where gold should be priced today. The bigger question is whether the world is moving in a direction that makes gold increasingly valuable tomorrow.

ICE brings futures trading to London’s $190 billion-a-day physical gold market | Kitco News

ICE brings futures trading to London’s $190 billion-a-day physical gold market | Kitco News | La revue de presse CDT | Scoop.it
(Kitco News) – The world’s largest physical gold trading market now has new futures contracts run by the world’s largest precious metals futures exchange. This week, the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) – owner of the New York Stock Exchange –launched exchange-traded precious metal futures trading in London. The contracts are directly linked to London's daily gold price auctions, and the exchange has also launched futures contracts for silver, platinum and palladium. The new ICE contracts give market participants an exchange-based means to trade precious metals price exposure from London.London’s physical gold trading dwarfs that of any other global market, with daily over-the-counter transactions in the area of $190 billion, while the city's vaults hold approximately $1.4 trillion in gold bullion. Unlike New York, which has had well-established gold futures trading, London has not had a major gold futures market in many years despite its dominant position in the physical bullion market.Previous attempts to establish gold futures trading in London did not last. The London Gold Futures Market was launched in 1982 but shut down only three years later after failing to attract a critical mass of trading activity. Then in 2017, the London Metal Exchange launched their own gold futures, but the contract was eventually discontinued in 2022.ICE's latest attempt leverages its existing role in London's physical metals market, as the exchange already operates the daily auctions that set the benchmark prices for gold, silver, platinum and palladium.See live precious metals prices for gold, silver, platinum and palladium — in USD, CAD and 12 more currencies.

Gold doesn’t have to be a ‘dead asset’: Tokenization could unlock utility and expand the market – LBMA 2026 | Kitco News

Gold doesn’t have to be a ‘dead asset’: Tokenization could unlock utility and expand the market – LBMA 2026 | Kitco News | La revue de presse CDT | Scoop.it
(Kitco News) - Although gold is recognized as an essential monetary asset, it is also a dead asset, just sitting on a ledger; however, the tokenization of the precious metal could increase its utility, attracting more capital to the space, according to experts at the London Bullion Market Association’s annual Global Precious Metals ConferenceVincent Domien, Head of Precious Metals Trading at ICBC Standard Bank, said during a panel discussion that while institutional demand for tokenized gold remains relatively low, that could change dramatically once the metal can be put to work more efficiently.“I think the biggest thing for me at the moment, especially with price going up, is you have this dead asset on your balance sheet doing absolutely nothing for you,” he said.Domien said that although physical gold can already be used as collateral, the process remains cumbersome, with restrictions around vault locations and significant haircuts. Tokenization could potentially make gold easier to transfer and allow institutions to use their holdings as collateral for swaps or to meet margin requirements.“If you're able to tokenize gold and everybody's able to instantly use it, then suddenly you increase the use of gold dramatically,” he said. “How do we make this asset that lies on everybody's balance sheet doing nothing, do something?”Mike Oswin, Global Head of Market Structure and Innovation at the World Gold Council, said unlocking dormant gold could potentially release billions of dollars of new collateral into financial markets. For the gold market, greater utility could ultimately translate into greater demand.James Willis, Global Head of Precious Metal Sales at HSBC, said successful digital products could lead to higher gold holdings while encouraging investors and institutions to trade and use the precious metal more frequently. Because properly structured tokens are backed by physical bullion, growing adoption could ultimately feed back into demand for vaulted gold.“If we try and develop a product and we are successful, and we can get something out there into the ecosystem that is useful and helps to expand gold's utility, potentially this is a good thing for us as a business,” Willis said. “We will see gold holdings go up and we will see people...trading and using gold more frequently.”Tokenization could also expand gold’s appeal among retail investors.Willis pointed to HSBC’s digital gold token in Hong Kong, saying the product attracted new clients even though those investors already had access to physical bullion, ETFs and paper gold products. He said the simplicity of buying and transferring the token helped attract consumers who had not previously been interested in existing options. The potential market for this is significant. Oswin said the World Gold Council estimates there is between $6 trillion and $7 trillion in retail investment assets, compared with only roughly $50 billion to $60 billion in the retail vaulted-gold and token market. He added that gold has a unique opportunity in the broader tokenization trend because, unlike many financial assets that already exist electronically, bullion is a physical asset sitting in a vault. The challenge is using digital infrastructure to mobilize that physical wealth.“It’s physical, it sits in a vault, it needs management,” Oswin said. “It’s so important that we use the innovation now to be able to mobilize and get utility from that physical asset.”However, panelists emphasized that tokenization cannot compromise one of gold’s most fundamental qualities: trust. The panel noted that any digital representation ultimately has to be backed by physical metal, requiring trusted custodians, clear legal ownership and common standards. James Chapman, Director at Hilltop Consulting, said holders need confidence that actual gold sits behind their digital asset and that they retain enforceable rights to that metal. The World Gold Council is working on a Wholesale Digital Gold initiative designed to combine some of the advantages of allocated and unallocated bullion. The goal is to preserve the legal certainty and ownership rights associated with allocated gold while adding fractionalization and easier transfer and settlement.Rather than replacing the existing market, Chapman said the project is designed to create a complementary “third” way to hold, transfer and settle bullion. As Domien noted, investors can be long gold through either an ETF or a token, but the difference is what they can do with the asset once they own it.“In both cases you're long gold, but you don't have the same utility out of it,” he said. The U.S. dollar index (Kitco Global Index shows how much of today's gold move is the dollar versus the gold market itself.)

FOMC minutes show the Fed ready to hike again in 2026 as AI buildout replaces tariffs as main driver of core prices | Kitco News

FOMC minutes show the Fed ready to hike again in 2026 as AI buildout replaces tariffs as main driver of core prices | Kitco News | La revue de presse CDT | Scoop.it
(Kitco News) – The minutes from the September 15-16 Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting showed Fed members acknowledging the need to respond to persistent inflation, with most expecting that another rate hike would be necessary before year-end, while several saw the effects of the AI buildout on core inflation increasing while the effects tariffs waned. In the staff review of financial conditions, they noted that “the market-implied path for monetary policy had risen notably over the intermeeting period and that both market prices and market outreach indicated that investors placed high odds on a 25 basis point increase in the target range for the federal funds rate at the September meeting. They also noted that responses to the Desk survey “indicated that a considerable probability was placed on at least 25 basis points of policy firming by the end of the year.”“The shift in expectations was attributable in part to FOMC communications as well as to the incoming inflation data,” they said. “The manager also observed that considerable uncertainty remained about the path of policy at longer horizons.”In the staff review of the economic situation, they wrote that “information available at the time of the meeting indicated that inflation remained elevated,” while labor market conditions “continued to be broadly stable with some signs of gradual tightening,” and real GDP “was expanding at a solid pace.”“Economic growth abroad stepped up in the second quarter, as most foreign economies continued to demonstrate resilience despite heightened geopolitical tensions and elevated energy prices,” the staff wrote. “By contrast, indicators of economic activity in China through August suggested that the country's domestic demand growth remained weak.”They noted that total inflation abroad “remained above central banks' target levels in many foreign economies, reflecting higher consumer energy and food prices due to disruptions stemming from geopolitical developments,” adding that  “most foreign central banks remained focused on inflation risks.”In the staff’s review of the economic outlook, they wrote that inflation was expected to decline over the remainder of the year, with gas prices projected to move lower and core inflation forecast to edge down. “The staff's inflation forecast was somewhat higher for 2026 through 2028 than the one prepared for the July meeting,” they said.“Real GDP growth was projected to pick up over the second half of this year and to outpace potential through 2028, reflecting strong business investment, solid consumer spending, and supportive financial conditions,” they noted. “The staff's outlook for economic activity and the labor market was stronger than the one prepared for the July meeting, mostly in response to incoming information.”They warned, however, that the uncertainty around their projections was “substantial, considering the unknowns related to persistently elevated inflation, the potential economic effects of AI investment and adoption, and geopolitical developments.” They said the risks around the forecasts for employment and real GDP growth were “roughly balanced,” but risks to the inflation forecast were “skewed to the upside, given the possibility that inflation could prove to be more persistent than the staff anticipated.”Turning to FOMC members’ deliberations, the minutes noted that participants “noted that inflation remained elevated and that they had not seen sufficient progress on lowering inflation in recent months.” They said that “ongoing geopolitical developments, which had pushed up prices for crude oil and refined fuel products, and surging AI-related investments were contributing to inflation pressures.” Several FOMC members “observed that the rate of price increases in the core goods category also remained elevated, as effects of the AI buildout appeared to increase while the effects of tariff increases waned.”Participants “generally expected that inflation would remain elevated in the near term and then decline toward 2 percent over the medium term under appropriate monetary policy.” FOMC members “generally assessed inflation risk as skewed to the upside; some participants remarked that those risks had become more skewed to the upside in recent months,” the minutes said. “Many participants assessed that the longer energy prices remained elevated, the greater the risk that cost increases in certain sectors could lead to broader price pressures,” while some participants “expressed concerns that, after more than five years of inflation above 2 percent, elevated inflation rates could begin to affect inflation expectations and wage- and price-setting decisions.”Regarding the labor market, participants “judged that labor market conditions were stable and generally viewed the labor market as close to maximum employment,” and a majority of participants “assessed that the labor market had strengthened a bit recently, pointing to developments such as employment gains modestly outpacing labor force growth.”Participants “generally expected labor market conditions to remain stable, with the unemployment rate staying close to current levels,” the minutes said. “Participants generally viewed the upside and downside risks to the labor market as broadly balanced.”In their consideration of monetary policy, “all participants supported raising the target range for the federal funds rate 1/4 percentage point,” and FOMC members “generally emphasized that inflation remained elevated while the labor market appeared to be near full employment, with some signs of strengthening, and that economic activity was expanding at a solid pace.”“Based on the outlook and the changing balance of risks, all participants viewed a higher target range for the federal funds rate as appropriate,” the minutes said. “Many participants emphasized that a higher path for the target range would be prudent on risk-management grounds, providing insurance against inflation remaining persistently above target due to stronger-than-expected demand or further adverse supply shocks. A number of participants viewed a higher path for the target range as necessary based on their modal outlooks rather than on risk-management grounds.”“Several participants stated that they viewed the current policy rate as not restrictive or only mildly restrictive,” they added.Regarding the outlook for monetary policy, “most participants assessed that another increase in the target range for the federal funds rate would likely be appropriate by year end,” but they emphasized that “decisions at future meetings would depend on incoming information and its implications for the outlook and the balance of risks.”The vote for the 25-basis-point rate hike was unanimous.Gold prices continued to trade near the bottom of their daily range following the 2 pm ET release. Spot gold last traded at $4,110.38 for a loss of 1.28% on the session.

Wall Street nears bullish majority after gold’s late-week rally, Main Street fails to reclaim bullish bias as inflation data take center stage | Kitco News | La revue de presse CDT | Scoop.it
(Kitco News) – Gold prices finished the week higher after a volatile stretch, as early pressure from rising Treasury yields, a firmer U.S. dollar, and renewed inflation concerns gave way to a late-week rebound driven by softer yields, lower oil prices, and renewed dip-buying near $4,100 per ounce.Spot gold kicked off the week trading at $4,142.40 per ounce on Sunday evening, and the yellow metal initially pushed higher as traders continued to assess the inflationary impact of the U.S.-Iran conflict, elevated oil prices, and another round of central bank gold buying from China. The rally stalled Tuesday as the dollar and yields strengthened, and gold came under heavier pressure after the minutes of the September Fed meeting showed most policymakers still expected another rate increase would be needed before year-end.The selling accelerated Wednesday as rate hike expectations and a stronger dollar kept pressure on non-yielding assets, with spot prices setting their weekly low at $4,066.31 per ounce before buyers returned near the lower end of the recent range. Gold recovered Thursday after a strong 30-year Treasury auction helped yields retreat from the morning highs, even as oil’s surge kept inflation risk and December Fed-tightening expectations in the trade.Friday delivered the strongest move of the week, as the U.S. dollar softened, Treasury yields eased, and oil prices pulled back after reports of productive U.S.-Iran talks reduced some of the downward pressure on prices. The rebound gained further traction after preliminary University of Michigan consumer sentiment fell to 46.3 and inflation expectations rose, reinforcing gold’s appeal as an inflation hedge while keeping next week’s CPI and PPI data in focus. After climbing to its weekly high of $4,207.48 per ounce early Friday morning, spot gold eased into the weekend trading just $5 short of the key $4,200 resistance level. The latest Kitco News Weekly Gold Survey showed Wall Street back on the brink of a bullish majority, while less than half of Main Street believed gold would gain ground next week.“Up,” said Darin Newsom, senior market analyst at Barchart.com. “Fundamentally, the market hasn’t changed. However, if the latest mood of the US president holds and he decides not to bomb Iran again until after US midterm elections, the Energies sector could come down and metals rally. Technically, Dec gold is oversold and could post a short-term bullish close Friday if it settles above the previous high daily settlement of $4,187.10 (October 6). Dec remains well below its 45-day moving average calculated near $4,398, meaning there is some space to move higher short-term.”“Unchanged,” said Adrian Day, president of Adrian Day Asset Management. “We expect more back and forth until an end to the war, leading to expectations of lower CPI and less pressure on central banks to hike. The end of the war would also remove the safe-haven premium on the dollar. We don’t expect a large decline but no breakout either.”“Up,” said James Stanley, senior market strategist at Forex.com. “I think we may have seen capitulation this week as there was a clean sell-off and sellers quickly backed away from the lows. Closing the weekly bar in the green is notable and while trying to predict bottoms is tough, there’s mounting evidence that gold is continuing to see buyers show at or around the $4k level.”“Up,” said Rich Checkan, president and COO of Asset Strategies International. “The overriding belief now is there will be no Fed interest rate hike at the October FOMC Meeting. So, that should take some of the short-term pressure off gold. Treasury yields and a strong U.S. dollar will cap appreciation, but gold should still climb over the next week.”Kevin Grady, president of Phoenix Futures and Options, is watching next week’s CPI report for gold’s near-term reaction as well as clues about the Fed’s medium-term direction, but warned that one number doesn’t truly capture the complexity of the situation.“We have some inflation numbers coming out next week, which I think are going to be important,” he said. “I think we have to just wait on the data. We also have earnings coming out, and I think earnings are going to be great. I think the markets look positive. I think a lot of the news coming out has been positive.”“I just think it's about how the Fed wants to digest that data,” Grady added. “We saw the bad jobs number of 29,000. Everyone's saying it's clear markets rallied on that, because they're not going to be raising rates again. Right now, everyone's just in this position of trying to figure out what the Fed's going to do. We're stuck at a level, and we have to just wait it out and see where we land on this.”“It's just one of those things; you don't really have a choice. We have to just wait it out.”Grady said he thinks gold has lost the support it was enjoying from the debasement trade, and it’s now watching other markets for future direction.“We're trying to figure out month to month, on each number, what's moving,” he said. “If that 0.2% changed what the Fed's going to do… there's a lot of things right now that gold is waiting on.”“The key thing is, with everything going on, with where the bond market and yields are, gold is holding up.”Grady said that while he expects gold to continue trading in its recent range, he expects enormous volatility within that range because of the automated trading that's dominating the market right now.“I think it's very tick sensitive because the people aren't trading; it's the algos,” he said. “The algos trade literally every word that comes out. So the volatility in the market is not coming from traders trying to pick and see where the market's going. It's algorithms that are in there trading literally off the verbiage that is coming out. Every single sentence, every word is digested by an algorithm, and the algorithm [reacts].”Grady expects next week’s inflation numbers to come in hotter than expectations. “The inflation numbers have been kind of muted, but I think it's going to hit this month,” he said. “It's tied into energy prices and that's just a fact of it. I think the market's going to digest that; I think they're going to be factoring into it. It's going to be a higher print for inflation.”“It's not like this is the long-term inflation numbers,” he added. “I think that's what people are trying to decipher. Is this short-term? Is it long-term? There are so many moving parts to it. I just don't think we're going to be trading off of that one number.”This week, 14 analysts participated in the Kitco News Gold Survey, with half of Wall Street leaning bullish once again after gold’s positive weekly performance. Seven experts, or 50%, expected to see gold prices gain ground during the week ahead, while only two, representing 14%, saw the yellow metal declining. The remaining five analysts, 36% of the total, said they couldn’t predict gold’s direction, or expected sideways churn next week.Meanwhile, 206 votes were cast in Kitco’s online poll, with Main Street investors still failing to reclaim their bullish majority despite gold’s price resilience. 93 retail traders, or 45%, looked for gold prices to rise next week, while 77 others, or 37%, predicted the yellow metal would lose ground. The remaining 36 investors, representing 18% of the total, expected to see sideways price action during the week ahead.Inflation data will be the major focus next week, with the release of September’s Consumer Price Index and Producer Price Index reports, but markets will also be watching key regional manufacturing surveys and comments from Fed chair Kevin Warsh.Tuesday morning will see the release of Existing Home Sales for September. Then on Wednesday morning, the CPI report will be the focus, followed on Thursday by PPI, along with Retail Sales for September, weekly jobless claims, and the Philly Fed and Empire State manufacturing surveys. Then on Thursday evening, traders will watch for comments from Federal Reserve Chair Warsh when he speaks at an IMF event in Bangkok.Marc Chandler, managing director at Bannockburn Global Forex, sees gold prices under pressure next week. “In the past week and a half or so, gold basis spot has moved above $4200 on an intraday basis only to be greeted by sellers,” he said. “It must reestablish a foothold above $4230 to suggest a base has formed. Next week, the US will likely report CPI accelerated and with the pendulum over Fed expectations through the middle of next year at the lower end of their recent range, the adjustment could weigh on the yellow metal.”Colin Cieszynski, chief market strategist at SIA Wealth Management, believes gold’s next major pivot will likely come on the back of geopolitical developments.“I'm neutral on gold right now,” he said. “It seems to me like it's just range-bound, and that's fine. There's nothing wrong with that.”Cieszynski said he’s continuing to keep an eye on Treasury yields, but there are plenty of potential sources of volatility for the precious metals these days.“It's an interesting time, because we've seen that things could just come out of nowhere,” he said. “But they could come out of nowhere in either direction. World peace could break out, and oil goes down, and yields go down, and gold goes up, or the dollar goes down and gold goes up, or the opposite, the yields go up and the dollar goes up and gold goes down. We're just stuck in this back and forth, almost a tug of war, and at this point it's hard to determine which way things are heading.”“But what is clear is the Fed is looking for any excuse to not do anything at the next meeting,” Cieszynski said. “We'll see what happens with inflation next week, but other than that, I expect things to be pretty quiet.”Cieszynski said the market is reflecting the current situation and the more probable outcomes quite well right now. “Unless we see something significant kind of change, I think we're just treading water for the moment.”He pointed out that there are several important elections happening around the world, not just the U.S. midterms, and gold could move on the results.“The inflection point might be closer to the US elections, or after the US elections,” he said. “And there's other elections. There's a whole bunch of elections in various places happening over the next month or so.”“The administration seems to want to kick everything till after the midterms, and then let's see what happens with the midterms,” he added. “Does that increase or decrease confidence? Nobody really knows at this point.”“After the dust settles, we’ll see some of the results of all these various elections, and we can get a better sense of where the world is heading politically.”Alex Kuptsikevich, senior market analyst at FxPro, sees gold prices trending higher next week.“Gold rose by almost 3% in the second half of the week, which may well have marked a turning point,” he said. “The precious metal attracted buyers as the price entered the June–July support zone. This is well above the lower boundary of that range at $4,000, a level towards which we had expected the price to fall. Buyers were also supported by increased risk appetite on Thursday, which not only allowed the market to recoup the week’s losses but also pushed it into positive territory, closer to $4,200.”“Gold has plenty of room to rise over the next couple of weeks, with no technical barriers until the $4,300-4,350 range,” Kuptsikevich said. “However, this does not promise an easy ride, as market debt problems are rarely resolved quickly or on their own. We are almost certain that the European debt crisis will escalate, which could put pressure on gold, as it has been doing since the end of August. Furthermore, the dollar has probably merely taken a breather after four weeks of gains, but has not yet peaked. We therefore expect some further relief for gold next week, but significant challenges lie ahead in the longer term. Often, following elections, the dollar strengthens as political risks recede.”Michael Moor, founder of Moor Analytics, expects gold prices to post further gains next week.“HIGHER, unless we fail below the formation mentioned below,” he wrote. “In a Higher time frame: I cautioned on 8/16/18 the break above $1,183.0 warned of renewed strength. We have seen $4,443.1. These are OFF HOLD. We held exhaustion with a 56268 high and rolled over $1,651.1. This is ON HOLD. On a medium timeframe basis: The trade below 52554 projected this down $740 (+)—we attained $1,300.0. The trade below 52036 brought in $1,248.2 of pressure. The trade below 51606 brought in $1,205.2 of pressure. These are ON HOLD. We held exhaustion with a 49177 high after a pullback and rolled over $962.3. The break below 48185 projected this down $185 (+)—we attained $863.1. The trade below 47923 projected this down $205 (+)—we attained $836.9. These are ON HOLD. We held macro exhaustion with a 39554 low and bounced $799.6—if we continue in a bona fide bullish correction, the minimum target is 49636. This is OFF HOLD.”“On a lower timeframe basis: We held exhaustion with a 40190 low and bounced $736.0,” Moor said. “This is OFF HOLD. The break below 46369 brought in $545.7 of pressure. The break below 45886 projected this down $205 (+)—we attained $497.4. The trade below 44227 projected this down $65 min, $500 (+) max—we attained $331.5. The break below 43582 has brought in $267 of pressure. The break below 43043 brought in $213.1 of pressure, the break below 42820 brought in $190.8 of pressure, and the break back below 41949 brought in $103.7 of pressure; but I will no longer mention these. We held exhaustion at 41003 with a 40912 low and bounced $142.5. The trade above 41647 (-7.8 tics per/hour projects this upward $90 minimum, $175 (+) maximum—we have attained $69.0. The trade above 41784 (-7 tics per/hour) projects this upward similarly—we have attained $55.3. If we break back below either decently, look for decent pressure. A maintained gap higher will leave a minor bullish reversal.”At the time of writing, spot gold last traded at $4,194.64 per ounce for a gain of 1.28% on the week and 1.47% on the day.See live precious metals prices for gold, silver, platinum and palladium — in USD, CAD and 12 more currencies.

US treasuries sell-off complicates gold mine financing picture

US treasuries sell-off complicates gold mine financing picture | La revue de presse CDT | Scoop.it
The recent run on US Treasuries has brought into focus the question of the long-term status of the US dollar as the anchor of the global financial system, given that country's growing fiscal instability.

For the gold mining sector, the emerging situation may be the trigger for a reconsideration of the dollar's presently unchallenged status as the fulcrum of project finance.

Central banks add 39 net tonnes of gold in August with China, Uzbekistan and Poland leading purchases – World Gold Council | Kitco News

Central banks add 39 net tonnes of gold in August with China, Uzbekistan and Poland leading purchases – World Gold Council | Kitco News | La revue de presse CDT | Scoop.it
(Kitco News) – Central banks maintained the strong monthly pace of gold allocation to their reserves in August, with the Chinese, Uzbek and Polish central banks leading all sovereign buyers, while other banks repatriated or transferred their sovereign bullion to new vaults, according to Marissa Salim, Senior Research Lead, APAC at the World Gold Council (WGC).“Global central banks remain on pace with gold accumulation this August, with reported net buying totalling 39t,” Salim wrote in the WGC’s latest update. “Large, consistent buyers of gold in 2026 showed continued activity in the month, with China taking the lead, followed by Uzbekistan and Poland.”Salim said central banks have reported total purchases of 170 tonnes year-to-date in 2026.“Putting August’s total in broader context, analysis of reported central-bank gold purchases between 2016 and 2025 suggest modest seasonal variation, although differences across years remain substantial,” she noted. “Heightened economic or geopolitical uncertainty may play a role, but further analysis is needed to identify any strong and persistent underlying drivers.”And the composition of banks that were buying in August was as significant as the impressive total tonnage, Salim said, as “demand was again led by familiar participants pursuing multi-year accumulation programmes.”“This suggests that central bank activity continues to reflect longer-term reserve objectives, while monthly fluctuations are more likely to capture differences in implementation, market conditions and country-specific liquidity requirements.”The most significant central bank gold transactions in August and through 2026 included the National Bank of Poland, with 8 tonnes purchased in August. “Poland still tops the scoreboard when it comes to y-t-d gold purchases, buying 98t so far this year but we do see China catching up,” she wrote, noting that Poland now has 648 tonnes of gold in its reserves, bringing its 700-tonne target within reach in the coming months.“In its 22nd consecutive month of buying, the People’s Bank of China added 20t to its gold reserves in August,” Salim said. “China has reported adding 80t to its gold reserves y-t-d, second only to Poland. China’s official gold reserves now stand at 9% of total reserves, or around 2,387t.”The Central Bank of Uzbekistan also bought 8 tonnes in August, bringing its 2026 gold purchases close to 50 tonnes, with the country’s gold now totaling 439 tonnes and representing 90% of total reserves.“The National Bank of Kazakhstan bought 7t in August, with its y-t-d gold purchases close to 36t,” she wrote. “Kazakhstan’s gold now stands at 79% of total reserves, or about 377t.”The Czech National Bank has also been a consistent buyer of gold, maintaining a 42-month streak of monthly purchases, and added another 2 tonnes of gold in August. “The central bank has bought 14t y-t-d, bringing its gold holdings to 7% of its total reserves, or 86t,” Salim said. And after three consecutive months of net sales, the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey bought 3 tonnes of gold in August. “Y-t-d, Turkey reported net sales of 82t, with the majority of its sales happening in Q1 2026,” she noted. “Other central banks in the market this month include Bolivia and Ghana, having bought ~1t each respectively.”On the selling side, the Central Bank of Russia continued its net liquidations in August, selling off another 6 tonnes of gold. “Russia has sold 56t of gold y-t-d, with its total gold holdings now at 2,271t,” Salim said. And the Central Bank of Jordan also reported sales in August, selling 3 tonnes of bullion during the month. “Y-t-d, Jordan has bought 2t so far this year, lifting its gold holdings to 75t, approximately 37% of its total reserves.”Salim also noted some large recent repatriations and transfers of sovereign gold between jurisdictions.“On September 2nd, the De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) announced the transfer of 86t of gold from New York and Ottawa to London with the aim of improving the liquidity and tradability of its gold reserves,” she wrote. “In 2025, the Banque de France also conducted a similar operation in updating the tradability of their gold holdings.”See live precious metals prices for gold, silver, platinum and palladium — in USD, CAD and 12 more currencies.
