Goldings/Bernstein/Stewart | This Guy's in Love With You (Burt Bacharach) (live)

Larry Goldings has a unique style on the Hammond B3 organ, with which he could be heard alongside John Scofield, Maceo Parker and Norah Jones. ‘More ‘cool’ than ‘sweat’, but certainly not without feel’, is how Dutch daily NRC described his trio with guitarist Peter Bernstein and drummer Bill Stewart. All three play equally important parts in their brilliant melting pot of groove, melody and swing.

Gene Ammons - Little Girl Blue (Prestige Records/Official Audio)

Track taken from the Prestige album Nice An' Cool by Gene Ammons.

"A 1961 set of standards heavy on the ballads, Nice 'n Cool is prime Gene Ammons... Ammons' brilliantly soulful tenor saxophone really stretches out on the familiar melodies... Nice 'n Cool is first and foremost a mood album, with the unity of sound more important than the individual performances, but Ammons particularly shines." - All Music Guide

The Miles Davis Quintet - If I Were A Bell (Prestige Records/Official Audio)

Track taken from the Prestige album Relaxin' With The Miles Davis Quintet by The Miles Davis Quintet.

About the album:
Relaxin’ with the Miles Davis Quintet (plus its Prestige companions, Miles, Cookin’, Workin’, and Steamin’) is in every way a masterpiece, and elevated his quintet -- tenor saxophonist John Coltrane, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones -- as the gold standard of small groups. With its accent on bright tempos, from medium-bounce to crisply up, Relaxin’ remains one of Davis’s sunniest outings, a prime example of one of the outstanding ensembles of the 20th century reaching the summit of their artistry.

Stan Getz - My Old Flame (Prestige Records/Official Audio)

Track taken from the Prestige album Stan Getz Quartets by Stan Getz.

About the album:
These three sessions, cut within a period of ten months in 1949-50, established Stan Getz as a style-setter on the tenor saxophone and, principally on the strength of his ballad interpretations, as a popular jazz artist.

His time with the Woody Herman band in the late Forties had thrust Getz into the jazz public’s ear, particularly his solo on "Early Autumn," "Long Island Sound," based on "Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart," and "Mar-cia," his treatment of "When Your Lover Has Gone," reinforced his rise to prominence.

This is Getz at the height of his "cool" period, predating the West Coast movement by a couple of years. The superb solos and sensitive accompaniment by pianist Al Haig are added attractions.

Wayne Escoffery Quartet | Infant Eyes (Wayne Shorter) (live)

Recorded live at BIMHUIS, Amsterdam (May 28th, 2023)

Grammy-winning saxophonist Wayne Escoffery is one of the most gifted saxophonists in American jazz. A musician with respect for the jazz tradition, but one who looks beyond the smoky jazz clubs of the past. For example, his album The Humble Warrior included an interpretation of a choir piece by composer Benjamin Britten, alongside original compositions. This spring sees the release of the new album Like Minds by The Wayne Escoffery Quartet, which includes collaborations with likeminded jazz giants such as trumpeter Tom Harrell and singer Gregory Porter.

Sonny Rollins - You Don't Know What Love Is (Prestige Records/Official Audio)

Track taken from the Prestige album Saxophone Colossus by Sonny Rollins.

About the album:
Sonny Rollins’s Saxophone Colossus, consistently included on lists of the greatest jazz albums, showcases virtually every brilliant aspect of his complex musical personality. Rollins fronted a foursome including Tommy Flanagan, the consummate accompanist and an always-engaging piano soloist, Doug Watkins, one the supreme time-players of his day, and drummer Max Roach, whose radar-eared work was nothing short of miraculous. Though by the mid-1950s he was considered the up-and-coming young tenor man, Rollins (b. 1930) hit his stride as never before, forging such epochal performances as his signature calypso “St. Thomas” (in its debut recording), the sardonically witty “Moritat” (aka “Mack the Knife”), and especially the original minor-key blues opus “Blue 7,” wherein Rollins’s “thematic improvisation” came to the fore. As Ira Gitler concludes in his updated liner notes: [Saxophone Colossus is] “a statue of great stature, built to last.”
