Researchers design new inks for 3D-printable wearable bioelectronics: Potential uses include printing electronic tattoos for medical tracking applications

Flexible electronics have enabled the design of sensors, actuators, microfluidics and electronics on flexible, conformal and/or stretchable sublayers for wearable, implantable or ingestible applications. However, these devices have very different mechanical and biological properties when compared to human tissue and thus cannot be integrated with the human body.

3D Printing of Living Responsive Materials and Devices

3D printing has been intensively explored to fabricate customized structures of responsive materials including hydrogels, liquid-crystal elastomers, shape-memory polymers, and aqueous droplets. Herein, a new method and material system capable of 3D-printing hydrogel inks with programed bacterial cells as responsive components into large-scale (3 cm), high-resolution (30 μm) living materials, where the cells can communicate and process signals in a programmable manner, are reported. The design of 3D-printed living materials is guided by quantitative models that account for the responses of programed cells in printed microstructures of hydrogels. Novel living devices are further demonstrated, enabled by 3D printing of programed cells, including logic gates, spatiotemporally responsive patterning, and wearable devices.

What is Microneedling? What to Know About Collagen Induction Therapy

“Microneedling is used to treat a variety of skin conditions that cause depressions in the skin such as acne scarring, surgical scars, other scars, burns, enlarged pores, wrinkles (rhytides), and stretch marks (striae). (The procedure is less effective on deep, narrow ‘ice-pick’ acne scars than on broader ones.) Because microneedling does not deliver heat to the skin like lasers do, people who have melasma (dark patches of skin) and hyperpigmentation (dark spots on the skin) can undergo microneedling without the risk of worsening pigmentation problems. (Darker skin is susceptible to pigmentation changes as a post-inflammatory response.)”

Nanoparticle-Enabled Transdermal Drug Delivery Systems for Enhanced Dose Control and Tissue Targeting

Topically applied nanoparticles can penetrate the skin in one of three different ways: (1) through the appendageal route, (2) through the intracellular route, or (3) through the intercellular route. The appendageal route involves nanoparticles entering hair follicles, sweat glands, or skin furrows for either penetration to the dermis or retention for increased drug release. The intracellular route involves a direct path through the cell membrane of multiple layers of the epidermis. The intercellular route involves a more tortuous path between epidermal cells. The pathway taken likely depends on the nanoparticle size, charge, morphology, and material.

Photoacoustic microscopy of vascular adaptation and tissue oxygen metabolism during cutaneous wound healing

Cutaneous wounds affect millions of people every year. Vascularization and blood oxygen delivery are critical bottlenecks in wound healing, and understanding the spatiotemporal dynamics of these processes may lead to more effective therapeutic strategies to accelerate wound healing. In this work, we applied multi-parametric photoacoustic microscopy (PAM) to study vascular adaptation and the associated changes in blood oxygen delivery and tissue oxygen metabolism throughout the hemostasis, inflammatory, proliferation, and early remodeling phases of wound healing in mice with skin puncture wounds.
