The online platform developed by Dr. Utz-Uwe Haus and Prof. Dr. Robert Weismantel from the Department of Mathematics of ETH Zurich in collaboration with Dr. Jonathan Lindquistand Prof. Dr. Burkhart Schraven from the Institute of Molecular and Clinical Immunology of the University of Magdeburg and the Helmholtz Center for Infection Research in Braunschweig allows researchers to click through the signaling network of the T cells: Users can switch on twelve receptors, including the T cell receptor, identify the signals on the surface of other cells, or bind messengers.

En la Modalidad A: Proyectos actualmente vivos o en marcha y aprobados por la Comisión de Formación e Innovación Educativa en sus convocatorias de Proyectos de Innovación Docente 2011-2012 y 2013-2014, el premio ha sido para el proyecto “InmunoMedia 3.0”. Sus autores son: Alfredo Corell Almuzara (Coordinador), José Ramón Regueiro González Barros, Rodrigo Blanco Salado, David Pérez Torres, Juan Carlos Aragón Vasco y Luis Alfonso Sanz Díez, y está adscrito al departamento de Pediatría e Inmunología, Obstetricia y Ginecología, Nutrición y Bromatología, Psiquiatría e Historia de la Ciencia de la Universidad de Valladolid.
El Jurado ha valorado la aportación del proyecto a los cambios propiciados por el desarrollo de las TICs y la creación del EEES (Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior), que implican que el profesor-tutor de las nuevas generaciones deba desempeñar nuevas funciones que incluyen el uso de las nuevas tecnologías tanto para diseñar Materiales Educativos Multimedia (MEM), como para supervisar el aprendizaje del alumnado. El proyecto destaca por el desarrollo y difusión del aprendizaje multimedia en el área de Inmunología (apuntes y píldoras de conocimiento) en lengua española, y por la necesidad de filtrar la gran cantidad de información existente, proponiendo sólo la válida y contrastada, y clasificándola y etiquetándola para su mejor uso.
El proyecto se articula en tres ejes: El primero contempla el desarrollo de Objetos de aprendizaje-MEM del área de Inmunología y extensibles a otros alumnos universitarios de Ciencias BioSanitarias en cualquier parte del mundo. El segundo, la colección, selección, filtro y propuestas de enlaces multimedia para la profundización del estudio. Y el tercero, la implicación de los estudiantes en la elaboración de un Diario de la Asignatura.

Differences in the cell morphology of macrophages in either pro-inflammatory (M1)-polarizing or pro-healing (M2)-polarizing conditions have been previously observed. As described in this study, M1-polarizing stimuli (LPS plus IFNγ) cause cells to flatten into a round, pancake-like shape, whereas M2-polarizing stimuli (IL-4 and IL-13) induce an elongated cell shape.

Conclusions We found no evidence to support a protective association between perinatal use of probiotics and doctor diagnosed asthma or childhood wheeze. Randomised controlled trials to date have not yielded sufficient evidence to recommend probiotics for the primary prevention of these disorders. Extended follow-up of existing trials, along with further clinical and basic research, are needed to accurately define the role of probiotics in the prevention of childhood asthma.

Cells that allow good bacteria to safely colonize the intestines of newborns may cause immune suppression, explaining why they are vulnerable to infection, researchers say.
Alfredo Corell's insight:

The researchers note that the process of CD71+ immune suppression is vital for the intestines to build up healthy bacterial colonization, and this is more important than the threat of neonatal infection.

However, they emphasize that further research is warranted in order to create new strategies for the protection of newborn infants against infection while still allowing the CD71+ cells to assist in developing healthy intestines.

Background

Systemic mastocytosis (SM) is a clonal mast cells disorder characterized by the proliferation, accumulation and activation of mast cells in extra-cutaneous tissues. The clinical picture is heterogeneous and may range from asymptomatic to potentially fatal anaphylactic reactions due to excessive mast cell mediator release.

Objective

The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence and trigger factors of anaphylactic reactions among adult SM patients. We also explored the clinical spectrum of mast cell mediator-related symptoms in SM patients.

Alfredo Corell's insight:

Anaphylaxis is more prevalent in SM patients, predominantly in atopic SM patients. Hymenoptera venom-induced or idiopathic anaphylaxis were the most frequent elicitors. Our findings implicate that all mastocytosis patients with anaphylaxis should undergo detailed allergological assessment before considering treatment and preventive measures.

Griffin and colleagues (July 11 issue)1 report a reduction in the incidence of pneumonia after the introduction of the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7). The authors address the concern regarding serotype replacement, whereby a vaccine-mediated reduction in the disease burden of Streptococcus pneumoniae PCV7 serotypes is offset by a proportional increase in nonvaccine serotypes. However, species replacement by other pathogens, particularlyStaphylococcus aureus, is equally troubling.2

There has been an increasing incidence of S. aureus infections in the United States since the widespread adoption of PCV7.3 According to Gause's law of competitive exclusion, bacteria compete for resources within the nasopharynx, which serves as a common nidus for infections. The S. pneumoniae pili interfere with S. aureus colonization4; however, PCV7 may disrupt this natural competitive advantage.2

The extended serotype coverage of newer pneumococcal vaccines may confer an incremental benefit in preventing pneumococcal pneumonia and invasive pneumococcal disease.5 However, this artificial-selection pressure risks shifting the disease burden toward other pathogens; this is an important point in consideration of the adoption and monitoring of future bacterial vaccines.

Epidemiological studies have shown that short or insufficient sleep is associated with increased risk for metabolic diseases and mortality. To elucidate mechanisms behind this connection, we aimed to identify genes and pathways affected by experimentally induced, partial sleep restriction and to verify their connection to insufficient sleep at population level. The experimental design simulated sleep restriction during a working week: sleep of healthy men (N = 9) was restricted to 4 h/night for five nights. The control subjects (N = 4) spent 8 h/night in bed. Leukocyte RNA expression was analyzed at baseline, after sleep restriction, and after recovery using whole genome microarrays complemented with pathway and transcription factor analysis. Expression levels of the ten most up-regulated and ten most down-regulated transcripts were correlated with subjective assessment of insufficient sleep in a population cohort (N = 472). Experimental sleep restriction altered the expression of 117 genes. Eight of the 25 most up-regulated transcripts were related to immune function. Accordingly, fifteen of the 25 most up-regulated Gene Ontology pathways were also related to immune function, including those for B cell activation, interleukin 8 production, and NF-κB signaling (P<0.005). Of the ten most up-regulated genes, expression of STX16 correlated negatively with self-reported insufficient sleep in a population sample, while three other genes showed tendency for positive correlation. Of the ten most down-regulated genes, TBX21 andLGR6 correlated negatively and TGFBR3 positively with insufficient sleep. Partial sleep restriction affects the regulation of signaling pathways related to the immune system. Some of these changes appear to be long-lasting and may at least partly explain how prolonged sleep restriction can contribute to inflammation-associated pathological states, such as cardiometabolic diseases.
