What’s at the top of the learning and teaching agenda in the UK? | Jisc Inform / Issue 38, Winter 2013 | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Students are more satisfied than ever according to the National Student Survey results, which revealed that 85% were happy with the teaching on their courses. And on the other side of the desk, institutions are working hard to raise standards and meet student expectations. Last year, Jisc and our partners began to take a more holistic approach to supporting learning and teaching in universities with bespoke consultation and workshops, as well as a leadership development course for leading in technology-enhanced change. The early results are encouraging: the University of Gloucestershire said their involvement in the project “will produce a long-term legacy in changed culture and behaviour.”

Digital Literacy: socio-technical futures and arts higher education | Digital Present

Digital Literacy: socio-technical futures and arts higher education | Digital Present | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Today, the UK’s higher education (HE) system is operating at a time of significant socio-economic and political flux, and rapid technological change. To add to this complex weave, and affecting arts departments and institutions throughout the country, the value of arts education has been under intense scrutiny at all levels. Hence, our current learning landscape is one that is unsettled, and as such, requires us to devote time to study, reflect and debate educational futures and values. Engagement with, or enabling of, multiple forms of digital literacy is a critical undertaking if those involved with arts and design HE are to have a meaningful, sustained and influential engagement with emerging socio-technical developments.

Sugata Mitra has opened the doors of the world’s first School in the Cloud.

Located inside George Stephenson High School in Killingworth, England, this one-room learning lab is a space where students can embark on their own learning adventures, exploring whatever questions most intrigue them. Students even designed the interior of the space — which has colorful beanbags scattered throughout and (very appropriately) fluffy clouds painted on the walls.

ICDE » ICDE and partners launch Global Online Higher Education Report initiative

ICDE » ICDE and partners launch Global Online Higher Education Report initiative | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Have you ever looked for good research data on the global impact of distance or online learning and discovered that this just doesn't exist?

CDE has partnered with UNESCO, the European Commission, the International Association of Universities, the Sloan Consortium, StudyPortals and Babson Survey Research Group to begin work on this formidable task.

[snip]

The global landscape of post-secondary education is in a period of dramatic change. A significant driver for this has been a dramatic rise in the use of technology and the extension of the traditional campus to more learners.

Although there is clear evidence of the growth of online learning, the global data remains anecdotal or limited in scope. There has been no formal effort or process to define online learning in the global context.

[snip]

The Global Online Higher Education Report (GlobalOHER) initiative is designed to address this deficiency by conducting a global survey and issuing a report that will provide:

Information on enrolments and programmes offered onlineInformation on the role of MOOCs around the worldInformation on the adoption of Open Education Resources, OERPerspectives on the importance of online learning in institutional strategiesThe challenges institutions face in delivering high quality programs and servicesA framework of the policy issues that institutions believe need to be addressed

Libraries: championing digital information on campus

Libraries: championing digital information on campus | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Alison Mackenzie explains how a new project is looking at the role university libraries play in developing digital literacy

The Society of College, National and University Libraries (SCONUL) is working on a project to review the roles academic libraries are playing in developing the digital literacies within their own institutions, and across the information profession. Academic librarians have a long tradition of championing the effective use of information. The SCONUL project is designed to reveal how libraries and librarians are shaping their services to maximise the opportunities and benefits of working in a digital environment.

Why evidence-based teaching methods are a bad idea.

At a time when society finds it hard to provide compelling answers to the problems that people face, the realm of science is being plundered in search of moral authority. The exhaustion of the old taken-for-granted ideals, values and ideologies has led to a search for new ways for validating views and opinions. Instead of trying to give meaning to the problems we face through reflection and debate, governments now embrace science as the unique source of truth....

These calls, outlined by the science writer Ben Goldacre in a paper called Building Evidence into Education, are supported by the UK’s Department of Education.
