Disinformation and 'fake news': Final Report Contents
Conclusions and recommendations  Regulation and the role, definition and legal liability of tech companies

 

1.Social media companies cannot hide behind the claim of being merely a ‘platform’ and maintain that they have no responsibility themselves in regulating the content of their sites. We repeat the recommendation from our Interim Report that a new category of tech company is formulated, which tightens tech companies’ liabilities, and which is not necessarily either a ‘platform’ or a ‘publisher’. This approach would see the tech companies assume legal liability for content identified as harmful after it has been posted by users. We ask the Government to consider this new category of tech company in its forthcoming White Paper. (Paragraph 14)

I am pleased to report that ALA OITP Digital Literacy Task Force (of which I [Bobbi Newman] was a member, it has disbanded) released the final Conclusions and Recommendations

 

I have highlighted some sections I believe are the most important specifically sections related to

libraries as powerful partners in their communities, working with others on digital literacy issues and demonstrating the attractiveness of libraries as partners in their communities  the importance of a culture of learning, exploration, and curiosity for library staff.continuing education for library staff and support for this by directors, local, state, and national organizations.sharing resources, collaboration,the value of good research, not just to libraries, but to those who want to support libraries, and those who should
