For many professors, student assessment is one of the most labor-intensive components of teaching a class. Items must be prepared, rubrics created, and instructions written. The work continues as the tests are scored, papers read, and comments shared. Performing authentic and meaningful student assessment takes time. Consequently, some professors construct relatively few assessments for their courses.

I was recently team-teaching and my colleague was speaking to our students about how they should use the Module Learning Outcomes and Pass Descriptors to inform their work and used the phrase “allowing you to experience success”. There was a slight buzz of conversation in the room and I overheard a few students muttering ‘I didn’t know they could do that’ and (bearing in mind these are trainee teachers) ‘have you ever done that with your learners?’.

Are you thinking about designing an online assessment for a Flipped classroom? This article examines four steps I undertook when teaching a first year undergraduate accounting course. First, consider whether the tool you are thinking about is the right tool for what you want to assess. Second, does this online assessment align with the rest of the course curriculum. Third, think about what strategies you can use to engage students with the online assessment.

Performance-based assessments share the key characteristic of accurately measuring one or more specific course standards. They are also complex, authentic, process/product-oriented, open-ended, and time-bound.

An APA group has condensed the scientific literature into an easy-to-use resource for PreK–12 teachers. Psychological science has much to contribute to enhancing teaching and learning in the everyday classroom by providing key insights on: * Effective instruction. * Classroom environments that promote learning. * Appropriate use of assessment — including data, tests, measurement and research methods that inform practice. We present here the most important principles from psychology — the Top 20 — that would be of greatest use in the context of pre-K to 12 classroom teaching and learning. We encourage consideration and practice of the Top 20 throughout all teacher preparation programs to ensure a solid foundation of psychological knowledge in pre-K to 12 instruction
When we make learning visible, teachers and students are better able to assess their impact. These six strategies will get you started.

I’m really excited to see that educators are clear about the use of formative and summative assessment. We’re using formative assessment to gauge the effectiveness of our teaching and to know what our students know and have yet to learn. We’re using summative assessment to evaluate student progress toward course goals and report grades.

Assessments are no longer simply tests that students fret about or neglect to study for. As you may well know, today’s environment of heightened accountability for educators has made assessments stressful for not only students, but for teachers as well. Not to worry, though. Assessments can actually be powerful (and even fun!) tools to evaluate how well your students are mastering the material you’re covering in class and how well you’re doing covering said material.

Reflecting takes many forms in the classroom, and it is an integral and indispensable part of education. Great teachers reflect on their daily practice and tweak their units, interactions, and attitudes, both at the end of a class and in the midst of their work. In the same way, students need to reflect on their actions and their work in order to build their classroom community and increase their own knowledge and skills. If you want to integrate reflection into your teaching practice, here are seven tips that you can start implementing in your classroom now

Classroom Assessment Techniques, or CATs, are simple ways to evaluate students’ understanding of key concepts before they get to the weekly, unit, or other summative-type assessment (Angelo & Cross, 1993). CATs were first made popular in the face-to-face teaching environment by Angelo and Cross as a way to allow teachers to better understand what their students were learning and how improvements might be made in real time during the course of instruction. But the same principle can apply to online teaching as well.

To do that, we believe it’s imperative to build best-practice processes of assessment across an entire institution that enable: 1) faculty to have the support and tools needed to more effectively communicate feedback on performance to students; 2) students to have the support and tools needed to more deeply engage in a reflective learning process; and 3) administrators to better collect and measure data on teaching and learning with the purpose of using that data to improve student learning.

This is a follow-up to my earlier post on HEFCE's Quality Assessment consultation. This post elaborates the reasons why using student outcomes data to assess educational quality is unacceptable, in the form of an open letter that all academic colleagues are invited to sign. To do so, just add your name, title and institutional affiliation…

I can’t measure learning, only the symbolic artifacts of learning. That’s not so strange. We measure civic responsibility by how many people vote, but we can’t measure how “good” those votes are, the extent to which they are backed by intelligent thought or research into the issues. We can only measure outcomes.
