In a conversation on LinkedIn, one person asked, "What are the characteristics of an effective teacher?" I read quite a few excellent remarks that describe what such a teacher does to be effective. I couldn't help thinking about some of my best teachers.

27 Characteristics Of Authentic Assessment

27 Characteristics Of Authentic Assessment

Almost 25 years ago, I wrote a widely-read and discussed paper that was entitled: “A True Test: Toward More Authentic and Equitable Assessment” that was published in the Phi Delta Kappan. I believe the phrase was my coining, made when I worked with Ted Sizer at the Coalition of Essential Schools, as a way of describing “true” tests as opposed to merely academic and unrealistic school tests. I first used the phrase in print in an article for Educational Leadership entitled “Teaching to the (Authentic) Test” in the April 1989 issue.

Daniel Rimmereid's curator insight, March 25, 2014 8:57 PM

This article offers great insight into what authentic assessment is. It was very helpful in telling me precisely what authentic assessment is and how it can be used in the classroom. The author’s main point is that many people and educators have ruined the meaning of authentic assessment so he wants to clear the air and be very direct with his definition of authentic assessment. It will certainly try to implement authentic assessment into my classroom and teaching. Authentic assessment is much needed in our “standardized testing world.” If a teacher uses authentic assessment right they can help their students more fully and deeply understand the material they are being assessed on as well as grow in many “real world” skills. Authentic assessment provides a way in which students can take ownership of what they have learned and how they can apply it.

9 Characteristics Of The Shift To Learning With Tablets

9 Characteristics Of The Shift To Learning With Tablets

This post is sponsored by Samsung in Education. They asked us to write anything we felt was relevant to mobile learning or learning through tablets. We focused on the shift in instructional planning to accommodate laptops in the classroom.

So many modern trends in learning are based on technology.

Game-based learning, mobile learning, the flipped classroom, blended learning, and more all depend on technology at the core of how they work. But these shifts bring with them other more important trends that challenge the cognitive demand on students, and the requisite instructional design and lesson planning on the part of teachers. Chief among them is the potential for the personalization of learning.

You can’t just add tablets to old learning models and expect success. If anything, this overly-simplified can seem to discredit the performance of learning technology, making future thinking and buy-in even more challenging. Designing instruction around tablets requires some slight shifts in how you view when, why, and how learning happens.

9 Characteristics Of 21st Century Learning

The label of “21st Century learning” is vague, and is an idea that we here at TeachThought like to take a swing at as often as possible, including:

–weighing the magic of technology with its incredible cost and complexity

–underscoring the potential for well thought-out instructional design

–considering the considerable potential of social media platforms against its apparent divergence from academic learning

Some educators seek out the ideal of a 21st century learning environment constantly, while others prefer that we lose the phrase altogether, insisting that learning hasn’t changed, and good learning looks the same whether it’s the 12th or 21st century.

Recent technological advances have affected many areas of our lives: the way we communicate, collaborate, learn, and, of course, teach. 10 characteristics of authentic learning | Learning with 'e's

I argued yesterday that authentic learning is a vital part of education in the 21st Century. The need to create learning opportunities that are grounded in reality, and form a concrete basis for real world transferable knowledge and skills has never been more important. We also need authentic assessment for learning. Too often in school classrooms around the world the delivery of content is abstract, disconnected and decontextualised. Students are then regularly tested on their recall of what they have 'learnt' and graded as successes or failures. But exactly what is their success or failure? And what does this process of assessment teach students about the school system? Part of the problem is that content is delivered, with little opportunity for students to make personal sense of that content. Another problem is that students are then expected to replicate that 'knowledge' in a form that is recognisable as the original. Students are therefore learning exactly what is already known, rather than exploring new knowledge and gaining fresh insight on the world.

6 Top Facts About Adult Learning Theory Every Educator Should Know

6 Top Facts About Adult Learning Theory Every Educator Should Know | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

There are many great educators and they all have one thing in common. It is not that they are the best among the best in their own field. Instead, they are the ones who know best how to facilitate learning. Teachers may be experts in their respective niche, but if they do not possess the facility to assist students in the learning process, it does not matter how much they know or how skilled they are.
