Mastodon, the free and open-source decentralized social networking platform, has patched four vulnerabilities, one of them critical that allows hackers to create arbitrary files on the server using specially crafted media files.
Mastodon has about 8.8 million users spread across 13,000 separate servers (instances) hosted by volunteers to support distinct yet inter-connected (federated) communities.
All the four issues fixed were discovered by independent auditors at Cure53, a company that provides penetration testing for online services. The auditors inspected Mastodon's code at Mozilla's request. Learn more / En savoir plus / Mehr erfahren: https://www.scoop.it/t/social-media-and-its-influence/?&tag=Mastodon

Folks are spending less time on Twitter since Elon Musk bought the social media site last year, but there’s still plenty of demand for similar platforms like Mastodon and Bluesky. To that point, Meta has long been rumored to be building its own platform to rival Twitter. After months of speculation, there’s finally some details to go along with the rumors, according to digital media marketing expert Lia Haberman.

Don’t look now, Elon Musk, but Twitter founder Jack Dorsey is about to launch a public test version of a new social media app.
The app, Bluesky, is gearing up for a test run just after Musk plunked down $44 billion to buy Twitter. It already has a waiting list of users waiting to try out the app’s beta version.
It’s not yet clear what Bluesky will eventually look like or how it will function, but it has been noted as a rival to Twitter. Learn more */ En savoir plus / Mehr erfahren: https://www.scoop.it/topic/social-media-and-its-influence

Ever since Star Wars first showed space wizards talking to holograms, calling someone and chatting with their 3D simulacrum has become a staple of science fiction. But based on a patent application published in January, it sure looks like FacebookMeta is trying to make 3D conversations a reality right now — even if not quite the way George Lucas envisioned it.
With the disclaimer that many patents never end up becoming an actual product, the patent does hint at how Meta envisions the future of communication.
What’s the patent about? Meta, then Facebook, filed a Patent Application in 2020 titled 3D Conversations in an Artificial Reality Environment. Specifically, the application outlines a pipeline for capturing and transmitting 3D representations of callers, “allowing conversation participants to appear as if face-to-face.” Learn more / En savoir plus / Mehr erfahren: https://www.scoop.it/topic/21st-century-innovative-technologies-and-developments/?&tag=Hologram

Twitter has begun testing the first of its proposed suite of new privacy tools: the ability to remove a follower without blocking them. The remove follower feature is currently being tested on the web and seems to canonize the “soft block” concept as an official Twitter tool.
According to the tweet announcing the test, you can remove followers from the follower list on your profile page. You just click the three-dot menu next to a follower’s name, click “Remove follower,” and your tweets will no longer automatically show up in their timeline. Twitter users are turning to the long-established federated community system known as Mastodon as the Musk era brings chaos to the 'bird site' social network. But how can you best secure a Mastodon account?
As even more employees leave Twitter following Elon Musk's 48 hours to quit ultimatum, and previously banned accounts return, the social network could be facing it's most perilous weeks since going into private ownership. For many Twitter users, the escape route to another network is coming via Mastodon. The Twitter infosec community is already establishing a healthy Mastodon presence, but many non-infosec users are asking how secure the federated community network is.
Is Mastodon a secure social network? Learn more / En savoir plus / Mehr erfahren: https://www.scoop.it/topic/social-media-and-its-influence/?&tag=Mastodon https://www.scoop.it/topic/securite-pc-et-internet/?&tag=Mastodon

Twitter has confirmed a recent data breach was caused by a now-patched zero-day vulnerability used to link email addresses and phone numbers to users' accounts, allowing a threat actor to compile a list of 5.4 million user account profiles.
Last month, BleepingComputer spoke to a threat actor who said that they were able to create a list of 5.4 million Twitter account profiles using a vulnerability on the social media site.
This vulnerability allowed anyone to submit an email address or phone number, verify if it was associated with a Twitter account, and retrieve the associated account ID. The threat actor then used this ID to scrape the public information for the account. Ari Meilich was an early pioneer in the metaverse by building Decentraland, along with Esteban Ordano and their team, the first decentralized virtual reality space in 2017. Through a $24 million initial coin offering, the proceeds went toward creating a unique virtual reality experience. The project enabled users to build a wide array of interactive experiences, ranging from playing video games to building cities and attending live events.
Meilich could have been a Mark Zuckerberg and owned Decentraland. Instead, he took a brave and innovative approach. The ownership was more akin to a Kibbutz or commune, in which the collective society can own a piece. People may purchase empty land parcels within the Decentraland environment using MANA, the accepted cryptocurrency used for payments. Instead of going into the pockets of the owner of the site, the money is placed into the community’s account. As it's grown and people acquire land, there are peer-to-peer transactions, such as the recent purchase of space on Decentraland by Andrew Kiguel, CEO of Tokens.com for $2.5 million. As of January 2022, MANA is valued at around $2.96 with a market cap of over $5 billion.
