India’s Travel Retail Boom: A Silent Giant Awakens.
Did you know India is now among the top five global aviation markets, with over 450 million passengers annually—and growing rapidly?
India isn’t just a booming consumer economy—it’s a rising powerhouse in travel retail. With millions of affluent flyers, expanding international routes, and a young, aspirational demographic, travel retail in India is no longer just about souvenirs and tobacco. It’s about luxury, prestige, and experience.
India’s economic resilience, strong domestic demand, and rising disposable incomes have made airport retail one of the fastest-growing retail segments in the country. From global fashion houses to fine liquor brands and niche fragrances—everyone wants a slice of the Indian traveller’s wallet.
Here are the major Indian travel retail hotspots you should know: 1. Delhi Duty Free – Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) 2. Mumbai Duty Free – Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) 3. Bengaluru Duty Free – Kempegowda International Airport (BLR) 4. Hyderabad Duty Free Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (HYD) 5. Chennai Duty Free – Chennai International Airport (MAA) 6. Cochin Duty Free – Cochin International Airport (COK) 7. Kolkata Duty Free – Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) 8. Goa Duty Free – Manohar International Airport (GOX) 9. Ahmedabad Duty Free – Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (AMD) 10. Trivandrum Duty Free – Trivandrum International Airport (TRV) 11. Kannur Duty Free - Kannur International Airport (CNN)
With global brands localising assortments and investing in visibility, India’s travel retail landscape is becoming as premium and dynamic as Singapore, Dubai, or Heathrow.
If you’re a brand or a global buyer still overlooking India, it’s time to rethink.
Let’s connect if you’re interested in the pulse of Indian travel retail!

Despite India’s staggering domestic tourism volume and growing global influence, outbound travel penetration remains low with less than 9% of the population holding a passport or traveling overseas. The potential however, is immense. States like Punjab and Kerala lead in passport density, primarily driven by aspirations for immigration, overseas education, and employment in destinations like Canada and the Gulf.
As infrastructure, income, and exposure continue to rise across Tier 2 and 3 cities, India's next wave of outbound travelers is already in motion and they are younger, digitally native, and culturally confident.
Interesting Stats on the country's outbound tourism potential:
1) Dubai continues to be India's largest outbound international destination.
2) 99% of Indian tourists travel domestically. India sees over 2 billion domestic trips annually, showing untapped outbound potential as rising income, passports, and aspirations expand.
3) India ranks among the Top 10 global outbound spenders. According to UNWTO, India is consistently climbing global spend charts, projected to enter the Top 5 by 2030, driven by luxury, weddings, and experiential travel.
4) From 26 million outbound travelers in 2019 to a forecast of 50M+ by 2030, India is one of the fastest-growing outbound markets in absolute numbers.
5) Rising Middle Class means rising mobility. Over 400 million Indians are expected to join the middle class by 2030. Most of them digitally savvy, globally curious and travel-hungry.
6) 65% of India’s population is under 35. With the largest Gen Z & millennial cohort globally, India's outbound story is youth-led, experience-focused and social-media amplified.
7) With 850M+ smartphone users and digital-first booking habits, Indian travelers are not just numerous but easy to reach, engage and convert via digital platforms.

📊 How Indians Invest Their Hard-Earned Money 💸
Ever wondered where India’s savings go?
A recent breakdown of asset class preferences among Indian investors reveals a clear trend:
🏠 Real Estate – 51.3% India’s love for physical assets remains unmatched. Even today, more than half our investments are locked in real estate. Best returns and asset class.
🥇 Gold – 15.2% Tradition over trend! From weddings to wealth storage, gold remains our timeless favourite.
🏦 Bank Deposits – 13.3% Despite low returns, many still find safety in FDs & savings accounts. But is your money really growing?
📈 Equity – 5.8% The most under-penetrated asset class. Despite India’s booming stock market, only a fraction trusts equities. A missed opportunity? 💹
💼 Insurance, PPF & Pension – 11.4% combined Stability > Growth. These are great for long-term security but aren’t ideal for wealth acceleration.
💵 Cash – 3% Still being stashed under mattresses and safes!
⸻
🔍 My Take: India is at a tipping point. With growing financial literacy and digital access, there’s a massive shift coming in how the next generation invests.
💥 It’s time to: Rethink how we allocate capital 📊 Educate around modern asset classes
📚Balance tradition with returns 📉📈
🧠 Let’s help India move from safe to smart investing.
