With Covid-19 serving as a significant impediment to growth, most of the companies on the Business Journal’s list of LGBT-Owned Businesses in Massachusetts saw major disruptions, from shutdowns and furloughs to the lack of in-person interaction that hurt so many other companies.

The Gill Foundation — one of the nation’s leading funders of efforts to secure full equality for LGBTQ people — today announced it will match contributions up to $25,000 to protect NYC’s historic Julius’ Bar, which is under threat of closure due to the economic impact of COVID-19. The support is earmarked to support rent and utility costs. The foundation previously made a $20,000 contribution to Julius’ Bar in 2020.

Heineken joined Workplace Pride a few years ago. In 2019 the Employee Resource Group (ERG) HOP was created: Heineken Open & Proud, the LGBT+ network. By 2021, over 1,000 employees are associated with HOP, both from within the LGBT community as well as Allies.

When the country shut down nearly a year ago due to COVID-19, LGBT-owned businesses joined others in closing their doors. In response, the Massachusetts LGBT Chamber of Commerce continues its support for those businesses as they have since 2017.

So far, they’ve interviewed a wide range of groups, from Rude Boy Cookies to a local hair salon, an LGBT advocacy group, and a health care professional. “We were going into lockdown and saying, ‘How can we help our fellow businesses?’ Everybody needs a voice out there and talk about what’s happening,” said Pamm Meyers, one of the podcast hosts.
