Modern slavery also permeates the global supply chains of Australian businesses supplying goods to the Australian market from overseas. Major retailers, including Rip Curl, Woolworths, Coles and Aldi, have all been implicated in recent scandals involving exploitation in their supply chains. No company wants the curse of slavery in their products, yet too often that is the reality.

Apple cracks down further on cobalt supplier in Congo as child labor persists

Apple cracks down further on cobalt supplier in Congo as child labor persists | Sustainable Procurement & CSR News - ICT Industry | Scoop.it

Last year, Apple pledged to clean up its cobalt supply chain, but the technology giant said it wanted to avoid hurting the Congolese miners by cutting them off. Mining provides vital income for hundreds of thousands of people in what is one of the world's poorest countries.
Now, Apple says it has stopped — for now — buying cobalt from artisanal mines.

EcoVadis's insight:

Apple said it continues to improve conditions for workers and stop child labour - how are you fighting this issue?

Arielle Smith's curator insight, March 10, 2017 6:08 PM
Apple has temporarily halted purchasing cobalt mined in the Congo because of allegations with child labour and the issues surrounding it. This is a smart move on Apple’s decisions and one that was obviously not taken lightly as in the article it does state that they’ve slowly pulled out of this market as to not hurt the worker’s economically by cutting them off ‘cold turkey’. While these incomes are needed for the worker’s Apple’s resistance to purchase from them until things have changed or to find another supplier shows true dedication to this issue. They have stated that when the artisanal mines are up to their standards they will be willing to take them on as suppliers again.

Apple’s initiative to act while still considering the financial needs of the mine workers sets an example to companies as more sweat shops factories come to light in the media. Their promise to not use factories with unsafe working conditions and underage workers is a completely different reaction then the CEO of Nike’s reaction their own labour practices coming to light. Hopefully companies facing these issues will be able to view these 2 cases and invest the money into fixing their practices now to prevent these issues from having a negative effect in the media then wait to try and fix them after they’ve caused damage to the company’s brand reputation.

While labour issues in third world countries are a common problem and not an issue that’s gotten a lot of needed media attention (except in media cases where company’s were exploited) the fact that one of the largest profit grossing company’s in the world has decided to take action against this issue, could be the start of a new movement of new age socially responsible countries sourcing their materials from factories that practice safe labour laws while injecting a more sustainable income into these environments. This could create a socially prosperous new world where countries like Nike that supported an unlivable wage in third world countries but a rich environment in their own US building became exiled from the consumer’s world. This again comes back to the documentary The True Cost, examining the fast fashion industry and the treacherous conditions these people are forced to work in as the cost for producing gets driven into the ground by competing third world countries who can’t afford not to have this labour job even though it could be the death of them. Apple’s plan of action truly shows the best way for American companies to fix the issues they have caused.
Nick West's curator insight, March 27, 2017 9:36 PM
Once again large corporations are being caught but apple is attempting to make a positive change and stop the child labor issue
