Embrace the IT circular economy to support a sustainable device lifecycle

Embrace the IT circular economy to support a sustainable device lifecycle | Sustainable Procurement & CSR News - ICT Industry | Scoop.it
Despite the common belief that data center operations and the cloud generate information technology’s most significant environmental impacts, the embodied carbon of endpoint devices accounts for nearly half of overall IT greenhouse gas emissions in most enterprises.

As digital business accelerates, the use of corporate endpoints and peripherals continues to grow exponentially. Consequently, managing the environmental sustainability of end-user equipment is becoming a core responsibility and priority for IT leaders.

Yet many of them don’t realize that the decisions they make at every step of the device life cycle have a significant impact on IT sustainability. In addition to supporting corporate environmental, social and governance goals, strategic sustainability decisions can also provide benefits such as cost savings, modernization and infrastructure resilience.

The key to harnessing such benefits is to use the circular economy as a guiding framework for device sustainability. Here are the steps that IT leaders can take to rationalize, retain and restructure the use of devices continually, from procurement though disposal, in a way that equally serves the planet, engages employees and supports the business.

Huawei to sell large capacity battery for renewable energy in Japan

Huawei to sell large capacity battery for renewable energy in Japan | Sustainable Procurement & CSR News - ICT Industry | Scoop.it
With the growing demand for renewable energy, large-scale battery storage will be needed to conserve the power for a stable supply. According to NikkeiAsia, Huawei will start selling the large-scale battery system for renewable energy storage in Japan in March 2022.

As per the information, Japan is moving away from fossil fuels and shifting to renewable energy. The nation aims to have renewables account for 36% to 38% of energy generation by 2030. The lack of additional capacity in its power grid makes facilities for temporary storage that much more important.

However, Huawei is already a supplier of the small household battery system in Japan. Now, the Chinese tech maker will purchase small battery packs from CATL and bundle them into shipping container-sized units that can each store 2,000 kilowatt-hours of energy — roughly 200 times as much as a standard home battery.

Also, the container capacity can be adjusted based on the buyer’s needs. To be mentioned, Huawei is stepping its feet in the renewable power storage system sector, which is also already occupied by Tesla. Since last year, Tesla has been selling its own large battery system in Japan.

Sustainable IT: An environmental and social approach to business tech

Sustainable IT: An environmental and social approach to business tech | Sustainable Procurement & CSR News - ICT Industry | Scoop.it
Sustainable or green IT is not new. In fact, it has been a topic of discussion among IT leaders for decades. But the concept of sustainability in general, which the United Nations defines as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs,” is something people and organizations are prioritizing more than ever — and for good reason.

Concerns about the environment and climate change are front and center among world leaders, environmental advocacy groups, and society at large. Corporate executives and boards want their organizations to do their part — or at least be perceived as doing their part — to help.

The push for better environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives has taken a high priority at many organizations, and this encompasses more efficient uses of technology.

A circular economy could end waste – at the cost of our privacy

A circular economy could end waste – at the cost of our privacy | Sustainable Procurement & CSR News - ICT Industry | Scoop.it
To make this process profitable, the manufacturers of complex items such as vehicles are likely to use advanced internet-based data systems that can track components and products throughout their life cycles, from source to final use. That means that the companies best suited to helping introduce a circular economic model are the big tech firms that already use similar online data technology, such as Microsoft, Amazon and Google.

And that will inevitably create concerns about the implications on data privacy and security. Further sacrificing our privacy might be the price we have to pay to achieve a waste-free economic model. Or to put it another way, data protection may ultimately become a barrier to a circular economy.

High-Tech Trash: Creating Greener Cities with Smarter Waste Management

High-Tech Trash: Creating Greener Cities with Smarter Waste Management | Sustainable Procurement & CSR News - ICT Industry | Scoop.it

This year will be a watershed moment for the smart cities movement, as technology companies will be forced to demonstrate return on investment (ROI) on an accelerated time horizon. Those products and services that are low cost, leverage existing city assets, and focus relentlessly on process improvement for city systems will be the big winners in 2019. This can only be achieved if the public works and sustainability departments of a city are on the same page. Technology can bring these two departments of city government together, ensuring that they are oriented towards delivering more effective service and more sustainable outcomes.

EcoVadis's insight:

There’s no escape – new regulations and consumer demands are increasingly putting pressure on businesses to be more transparent about how they are addressing environmental, social and ethical concerns. As a result, more and more companies include sustainability clauses in contracts with their trading partners.
