What a Luxury Rehab Should Actually Include, and What the Word Is Often Hiding
The word "luxury" has been attached to so many treatment centers it has stopped meaning anything. A rehab can be luxurious and still be a 30-day program built around a group circle and a prescription pad. Here is what the word should actually mean, and the six things a genuine luxury rehab has to include before the ocean view counts for anything.
Most people who try to stop Xanax on their own describe the same thing. They cut the dose, felt worse than before they ever started, and decided they needed it more than ever. What they felt was withdrawal. This guide walks through the fifteen symptoms on the FDA label, grouped by what they mean: the ten most people feel, the three that unsettle people most, and the two that are emergencies. It also covers why a short-acting drug like Xanax is harder to come off, how long symptoms last, and why the pace of coming off matters more than the decision itself.
Why most benzo tapers fail, and why we built a twelve-week protocol instead of a taper. No seizures here in fifteen years. — Johnny Tabaie, founder, Holistic Sanctuary How We Taper Xanax Here I will describe how a Xanax taper runs here and then say where the claim stops. Programs here for benzodiazepine dependence are built around four to twelve weeks in residence, and up to sixteen when a taper needs it, one guest to one clinical team, with a medical professional managing the taper and licensed nurses present twenty-four hours a day. The taper follows the same principle as the guideline, gradual and individualized, but it is adjusted day by day rather than month by month, because the medical team is here and so are you, and the question of whether to substitute a longer-acting drug is decided by that medical team against your history rather than by a forum. That is the practical difference between a Xanax taper that fails at home in the first week and one that is designed around four to twelve weeks in residence, and up to sixteen when a taper needs it: not a different pharmacology, but a medical professional who can smooth the interdose troughs the day they appear, a nervous system that is not being asked to recalibrate on top of a job and a commute, and a body that is supported the entire time. That support is the Brain Repair IV protocol, a proprietary intravenous protocol our founder developed for exactly this work as one component of the Pouyan Method, running side by side with red light therapy, infrared sauna, NAD, daily massage, reiki and morning yoga, whose evidence is set out honestly on the timeline page. Every guest is screened before anything is administered: bloodwork, blood pressure, an EKG, a stress test and an echocardiogram reviewed by our medical director. Every guest sleeps in a private oceanfront suite and eats organic food with no seed oils and no processed food. Read Next
Where to Get Ibogaine Treatment: Licensed and Safe Experience Suppose you are searching for where to get Ibogaine treatment. In that case, it is crucial to understand that Ibogaine is a powerful and highly effective natural medicine, but it is not a quick-fix or overnight miracle. While it shows incredible promise for healing addiction, trauma, and treatment-resistant depression, Ibogaine can also be dangerous if improperly administered. Holistic Sanctuary is proud to offer a fully licensed, medically supervised Ibogaine program at our luxury healing center in Mexico for clients from around the world, including the United States. If you’re starting from the beginning, our plain-language guide to what ibogaine actually is covers the basics first.
What Is Ayahuasca? Understanding the Sacred Medicine Ayahuasca is one of the most powerful healing medicines known to humanity. A sacred plant medicine brew made from the Banisteriopsis caapi vine and Psychotria viridis leaves, ayahuasca has been used for thousands of years by indigenous Amazonian cultures for healing, spiritual development, and connection to higher consciousness. The word "ayahuasca" translates from Quechua as "vine of the soul" — and that name captures something essential about what this medicine does. For a complete primer on origins, chemistry, and clinical evidence, read our full guide: What Is Ayahuasca?

What Makes a Luxury Rehab Center Truly Different? Most facilities that call themselves a "luxury rehab" simply offer nicer bedrooms while running the same outdated programs that have been failing people for decades — group therapy circles, 12-step ideology, and medication management. That is not luxury. That is a comfortable cage with the same broken key. At Sanctuary Tulum, luxury rehab means something radically different. It means a fully private oceanfront estate where you are the sole focus of an entire medical and therapeutic team. It means zero group sessions, zero medications, and zero cookie-cutter treatment plans. Every hour of every day is designed around your specific neurochemistry, trauma history, and healing goals. Since 2011, we have operated as a licensed medical facility in Tulum under a federal health license — combining ibogaine therapy, medically supervised ayahuasca ceremonies, psilocybin-assisted therapy, and supervised 5-MeO-DMT ceremonies with regenerative medicine under one roof, all under on-site physician supervision. We serve clients from across the United States — California, Florida, New York, Texas, and beyond.
The most expensive rehabilitation programs in the world can run well into six figures for a stay of several weeks, while comparable-length programs elsewhere cost a fraction of that. The gap is large enough that it is reasonable to ask what, specifically, the additional cost buys — and whether it correlates with anything measurable. This is not a ranking of specific facilities by price, since price lists change and are rarely published transparently. It is a breakdown of the cost drivers themselves, so a family evaluating any program — expensive or not — can tell what they are actually paying for.
Ibogaine treatment centers are not all the same, and the difference is not comfort or price. It is whether the place can keep you alive if your heart rhythm changes during dosing. That sounds dramatic. It is the single most important thing to understand before choosing one. Where You Can Legally Get Ibogaine Treatment Ibogaine is Schedule I under United States federal law. No ibogaine treatment center can legally operate in the US, so American residents travel. Mexico permits treatment at licensed facilities under COFEPRIS oversight, and a smaller number of clinics operate legally in other jurisdictions. This is why every credible provider is outside the US, and why any US-based site implying local availability should be treated with suspicion.

What is ayahuasca? A brew of two Amazonian plants that produces a four-to-eight-hour visionary experience. Here is what it is, what a retreat and a ceremony involve, what the effects are, where it comes from and who it is not safe for.
https://flip.it/W_VJKj In brief: what is ayahuasca? What is ayahuasca? Ayahuasca is a traditional Amazonian plant medicine: a brew of the Banisteriopsis caapi vine and a DMT-containing leaf, usually Psychotria viridis. Taken in a ceremony under an experienced guide, it produces a four-to-eight-hour experience of vivid imagery, deep emotion and self-examination. Its effects, its risks and what a responsible retreat looks like are explained below.
Benzodiazepines in the elderly: falls (odds ratio 1.57), memory and the dementia question, the 2023 Beers Criteria, and how a safe taper is done.
Ativan withdrawal explained: the 12-hour half-life, 1 mg equals 10 mg diazepam, side effects, the dementia research, the ASAM taper rule, and how we treat it.

Lilly is buying a molecule. It cannot buy the weeks before and after, and those are what decide the outcome. Fifteen years of doing this one person at a time says the person still matters more than the patent.
The Wall Street Journal says Musk's circle is pouring cash into psychedelics and Lilly just paid $3.8 billion for a nasal spray. The founder of Holistic Sanctuary has been doing this work, safely, since 2007. The money is late.
Most people who arrive for a benzodiazepine detox have already tried three or four times. There is a reason the fourth attempt hurts more than the first, and it changes how the taper has to be run.
Acute benzo withdrawal is measured in weeks; for a meaningful minority it stretches into months. Here is the real timeline, drug by drug, and what changes the length.
"Rapid benzo detox" is the most searched and most dangerous phrase in this field. A plain comparison of what a taper does, what a rapid detox does, and what the research says about each.
Xanax, Klonopin, Ativan and Valium are among the hardest drugs in medicine to come off, and stopping abruptly can cause seizures. Here is what a real benzodiazepine detox involves, week by week, and why a list of instructions is not a taper.
The psychedelic movement has gone mainstream. The safeguards have not caught up, and the people paying for that gap are the ones who can least afford it. A generation of people who have been failed by conventional treatment is now looking for something that works. That is understandable. What has grown up around them is an industry of seven-day "ceremonies," overnight cures and beautifully marketed retreats that answer to no medical board, no licensing body and no one at all when something goes wrong. What the news has already reported The review sites carry the good stories. The dark side arrives only when a newsroom picks it up. In 2012, eighteen-year-old Kyle Nolan died at an ayahuasca lodge in Peru. The shaman buried his body and told his family he had wandered off. It took a police investigation to find him (CNN). In 2024, Rolling Stone published the story of a man who traveled abroad for ibogaine to end his opioid addiction and did not come home (Rolling Stone). In August 2024, a dentist in Durban, South Africa, was convicted of culpable homicide after a Canadian patient died during an unlicensed ibogaine detox at his clinic (TimesLIVE). A dentist. Administering a cardiac-active alkaloid. In August 2026, Costa Rica's retreat industry came under fresh scrutiny after another tourist death (Tico Times). These are the cases that reached a reporter. The ones that did not are the ones to worry about. Why it is going to get worse Three things are colliding. Demand is exploding as the research headlines arrive. The medicines themselves are unforgiving: ibogaine slows the heart and prolongs the QT interval; ayahuasca contains an MAO inhibitor that interacts with SSRIs, tramadol, lithium and stimulants. And the barrier to entry for a "retreat" is a website and a rented villa. Opportunistic people who are good at marketing have joined the movement, and the medicine cannot tell the difference. The most common failure is the simplest. A retreat emails a diet sheet and a list of medications to stop before arrival. The client, who by definition is struggling, cannot follow it alone. Nobody checks. Nobody tests. The ceremony happens anyway. That is how a person ends up tied to a tree in the jungle, or worse, and it is entirely preventable. Preparation is not a PDF. It is weeks of supervised work, with blood work and an EKG at the end of it, before anyone is handed a cup. A full list of the documented ways ayahuasca has killed people, and what prevents each one, is here: Ayahuasca deaths, side effects, and how to avoid them. What is coming from the regulated side Regulation in the United States is coming, sooner than later, and it is worth being clear-eyed about what it will and will not do. Esketamine, a synthetic dissociative anesthetic, has been approved since 2019. The FDA rejected MDMA-assisted therapy in 2024 over trial-integrity concerns. Psilocybin is in late-stage trials. Approval will bring standardized synthetic compounds and clinic protocols. It will not bring anyone to sit with you for twelve weeks, and it will not put a nurse in the room at a jungle ceremony. Expecting a regulator to protect you there is like expecting the building inspector to also be your bodyguard. They enforce a code. They do not look after you. What "safe" has to include Nature-derived medicine, done properly, is going to change how the world treats addiction, trauma and PTSD. It will only get the chance if the people offering it hold a standard. That standard is not complicated: in-house screening (blood pressure, blood work, EKG, and for ibogaine a stress test and echocardiogram), medication tapers under supervision rather than a list, a medical team present with nursing around the clock, programs of weeks rather than days, and someone willing to say no to a person who is not a candidate. The questions to ask any ibogaine treatment center before sending a deposit are the same questions a journalist would ask afterward. And one position, stated plainly: if a clinic has a death, it should stop operating until there is a full public accounting of what happened and what changed. That responsibility sits with the owner who hired the people in the room. A note from fifteen years of doing this Holistic Sanctuary takes no pleasure in any of this. It has operated since 2011 on the model above: more than 5,000 medically supervised ceremonies and treatments by its own internal record, programs of four to twelve weeks, preparation first and medicine last, and no guest death in fifteen years on that same record. Founder Johnny Tabaie has more than 30,000 hours of hands-on experience with psychedelic medicine and the holistic protocols that bring people off medications first, by his own estimate, and a supervised system for benzodiazepines refined over many years. No cure claims. Is there a cure for everyone? No. Can this help everyone? No. Is everyone a good candidate? Absolutely not, and the screening exists to say so. The thinking behind the model is at The Two-Decade Head Start. Figures are reported from Holistic Sanctuary's own records and are not independently verified clinical data. Nothing here is medical advice. Never stop a medication without qualified medical guidance.
