Analyzing Australia's wildfires in ArcGIS Online

Analyzing Australia's wildfires in ArcGIS Online. I highly encourage you to include some of these easily implementable yet powerful data sets and tools in your instruction. This uses Sentinel-2, MODIS, population density, ecoregions, and other data inside ArcGIS Online. And... praying for calm winds and some rain there.
Geography Teachers' Association of Victoria Inc. (GTAV)'s insight:
This is a brilliant use of Spatial Technologies - really worth using and certainly you should know about this.

'Disturbing and dramatic': Ecosystems may never recover from bushfires | GTAV AC:G Y10 - Environmental change and management | Scoop.it
Some ecosystems across Australia's eastern seaboard will never recover from the damage wrought by this season's bushfires, with several animal and plant species now feared critically endangered or extinct.
Geography Teachers' Association of Victoria Inc. (GTAV)'s insight:
Most of the post from the bush fires are curated in Hazards (Unit 1)  - please find them there. You will also find quite a lot on climate change under Current Events.

Urban Heat Islands Mean Warming Will Be Worse in Cities

Urban Heat Islands Mean Warming Will Be Worse in Cities | GTAV AC:G Y10 - Environmental change and management | Scoop.it

If you take a trip from rural Virginia into Washington, D.C., you may notice a change in atmosphere—literally. Scientists say the “urban heat island” effect, which can raise temperatures in cities by several degrees compared with their surroundings, could be a risk to human health as growing urban populations exacerbate the heating effects of climate change.

Geography Teachers' Association of Victoria Inc. (GTAV)'s insight:
The Heat Island effect means, as cities expand, they contribute to warming, mainly through the thermal mass of concrete.  How can this be countered? Madrid is painting areas white and mass planting of trees to create urban forests is also being attempted.

Discussions about climate change often skirt around the issue of population growth, but it is the main driver of rising carbon dioxide levels and many other environmental changes on a planetary scale.
Geography Teachers' Association of Victoria Inc. (GTAV)'s insight:
Connection the growth in population to the myriad other environmental changes - worth working through this with students. Very useful to connect the dots in Year 10.
