Meet the woman from Le Marche who deals truffles to NYC's top restos

Meet the woman from Le Marche who deals truffles to NYC's top restos | Good Things From Italy - Le Cose Buone d'Italia | Scoop.it

Sparvoli, 37, isn’t selling anything illegal. She’s selling truffles — specifically black Italian summer truffles and black winter truffles from Australia (a burgeoning growing region for the fungi given its opposite seasons) — to Pierre Schutz, the executive chef at the Mark Restaurant by Jean-Georges.
Francesca Sparvoli wheels around an insulated bag filled with about $6,000 worth of black truffles. She sells the pricey fungi to top chefs around the city and is on call 24/7.
Two years ago, Sparvoli, a native of the Marche region of Italy and a former journalist, moved to New York City with her then-boyfriend, now-husband, businessman Marco Bassi, to break into the NYC truffle trade. She and Bassi had always wanted to move to the city after visiting several times to run marathons, and the truffle business is in her blood — her family has been dealing truffles for three generations, and Marche is a major region for the fancy fungi.

Le Marche off the beaten path | A place once sacred, now haunting

Le Marche off the beaten path | A place once sacred, now haunting | Good Things From Italy - Le Cose Buone d'Italia | Scoop.it

The former monastery near Massa Fermana called the Convento di San Francesco was originally founded in 1215 by St Francis, who personally chose its position on an isolated hill separate from but in sight of the small town of Massa Fermana. The monastery was closed in the 1890s, for reasons I was not able to discover, and the property passed to the village. During the last war, I was told, the buildings were used to house refugees from the fighting and the church continued to be used until the 1950s. The property is now empty and boarded up, but if you enter (which you shouldn’t) it has that remarkable sense of distressed beauty common to so many abandoned buildings. There is a peculiar sadness to seeing such a beautiful building, one of whose key purposes was to represent continuity of shared beliefs and values falling into decay. The building itself seems determined to transmit memories of what it was and who was there. [...]

This group of caves [Frasassi Caves] is one of the most famous in the country. Located in the central region of Marche, the caves were reportedly first discovered in 1948, though most sources state that 1971 is when they began to be explored. Today the caves are open to the public for daily visits, and they are estimated to be around 190 million years old.

Ancona: First hybrid ISA Yachts 140 superyacht Silver Wind is launched

Ancona: First hybrid ISA Yachts 140 superyacht Silver Wind is launched | Good Things From Italy - Le Cose Buone d'Italia | Scoop.it

Italy’s ISA Yachts has launched its first hybrid-powered ISA 140, now christened Silver Wind.
ISA’s 43.63 tri-deck, planing-hull, composite-built motor yacht was ordered in June 2013. Her bold and sporty exterior styling come from Andrea Vallicelli while interior design is by design team Nuvolari Leonard. Silver Wind accommodates 10 guests in five staterooms. Notable outdoor living spaces include her spacious sun deck and spacious beach area and swim platform.
The new ISA 140 features a hybrid propulsion developed by Siemens and ISA. This allows her to top out at 32 knots and cruise 26 under traditional propulsion, powered by twin diesel engines driving Rolls-Royce Kamewa waterjets through reduction gearboxes, while also being able to run at low speeds of eight knots with the main engines switched off. In addition to reducing engine and generator hours, thus postponing maintenance needs, this hybrid setup also reduces fuel consumption, gas emissions and noise levels.
Superyacht Silver Wind is scheduled for a July 2014 delivery. She is for sale through Worth Avenue Yachts asking €21 million.

Macerata | Discovering Le Marche with Professional Guides | Good Things From Italy - Le Cose Buone d'Italia | Scoop.it

Macerata was rebuilt in the Medieval Ages (12th Century) on the top of the hill between the Potenza and Chienti rivers, after the desctruction of the Roman downstream city called Helvia Recina. You can see the ruins of Helvia Recina in the archeological area called Villa Potenza.
Piazza della Libertà, built in the Reinassance, is the main square of Macerata. It hosts the Theatre Lauro Rossi, the Town Hall, the University and the Loggetta dei Mercanti, that is to say a graceful two-tier arcades loggia. The Loggetta was commissioned by the cardinal Alessandro Farnese when he was in Macerata at the beginning of the 16th Century (later Farnese became Pope Paul III).

Verdicchio di Matelica 2013 Poggio alle Rondini

Verdicchio di Matelica 2013 Poggio alle Rondini | Good Things From Italy - Le Cose Buone d'Italia | Scoop.it

Founded in 1971, the cooperative who make this wine are today the largest producer of Verdicchio in Matelica, a small commune in Italy's Marche region. Located inland of Jesi, its more famous neighbour, Matelica lies at higher altitudes yet experiences a warmer climate.
A pale lemon colour, suggesting lightness and youth. The nose offers hints of acacia honey against a backdrop of citrus fruit. Dry and crisp, with a persistent finish.
Try this with the lightly spiced fish and seafood of the Adriatic coast.
