When Google chief financial officer Patrick Pichette said the tech giant might bring 10 gigabits per second internet connections to American homes, it seemed like science fiction. That’s about 1,000 times faster than today’s home connections. But for NASA, it’s downright slow.

On February 14, 1923, two months before Opening Day at the new Yankee Stadium, a Daily News reporter named Marshall Hunt shuttled Babe Ruth up to the Bronx to view the ballpark under construction. Curious to see if the Bambino was ready for the coming season, Hunt offered to toss a few balls to the snow-covered spot that would become home plate. Ruth removed his fur-lined coat, picked up a bat and proceeded to hit home runs. "Sorry you ain't pitching for the Browns," the Babe laughed, hat-tipping the Yanks' formidable St. Louis rivals. Next month, one of the balls the Sultan of Swat knocked out of the park for Hunt will be sold in an auction commemorating the 100th anniversary of Ruth's Major League debut. Collected by a stadium construction worker--who had Ruth sign and date it--the ball has been locked in a Florida collector's vault for more than five decades. Auctioneer Ken Goldin, owner of Goldin Auctions, expects it to sell for a minimum of $500,000. Article by Jonathon Keats in ForbesLife.
