Why building nature-centric housing involves a mindset shift

Why building nature-centric housing involves a mindset shift | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it
How do you build 1.5 million new homes in five years without destroying nature? Housing is unaffordable for most people, so the UK government plans to build as many homes as possible, as soon as possible. Assuming this brings house prices down (which isn’t a given), how can it be done without harming wildlife and worsening climate change?

‘A perfect symbiosis’: planting vines and other ways hot cities are creating cool spaces | Climate crisis | The Guardian | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it

As Spain takes a breath after yet another brutal summer heatwave, with temperatures above 40C in many parts of the country, the residents of the sherry-making town of Jerez de la Frontera have come up with a novel way to keep the streets cool.
Green canopies of grapevines festoon the town, reducing street-level temperatures by as much as 8C. “We’re planting vines in the old city because we hope that in two or three years we’ll be able to brag that this has put an end to stifling temperatures,” said Jesús Rodríguez, president of Los Emparrados, a group of residents who aim to beautify and green the city’s streets.

Deadly heatwaves are the new reality – we need to transform the UK’s cities and towns to survive them | Hannah Martin | The Guardian | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it
In the UK, we are unprepared at every level for the extreme weather caused by climate breakdown. Whether it’s unbearably hot buildings in the summer, our damp and cold homes (some of the leakiest in Europe) filled with mould in the winter, our unprotected towns built on flood plains, or our unfit-for-purpose train tracks that get shut down at the slightest weather warning, the climate crisis is already wreaking havoc on public and private infrastructure – and it’s only getting worse.

Global cities grapple with how to cool ‘urban heat islands’ | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it
On the streets of Paris, thousands of trees are being planted, the city’s distinctive grey zinc rooftops are getting a makeover and workers are installing drinking fountains that release a cooling mist.

The changes are all part of the French capital’s “fight against heatwaves”, says First Deputy Mayor Patrick Bloche. “Heat, increasingly, is a problem for Paris.”

Living Cities: Keeping cities powered in extreme heat – | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it

The beginning of July marked the planet’s hottest week in recorded history, with the average global temperature reaching 17.01 degrees Celsius for the first time.
That kind of extreme heat can create major problems for cities: As urban populations switch on air conditioners and fans to keep cool, power grids can struggle to cope with the massive spikes in demand.
This week we take a closer look at that challenge and how cities are coping with it.

Berlin's city government will adopt a draft law proposed by a citizen initiative to plant hundreds of thousands of trees in the German capital by 2040. According to public broadcaster rbb, the city government run by the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD), shelved plans to introduce its own bill for more green spaces and instead backed the draft from the citizen initiative “Baumentscheid” (tree referendum). The coalition parties said they could “not identify any need for major changes” to the citizen initiative’s draft, which will therefore be adopted “unchanged in its core parts”.

In recent decades, the most intense heatwaves in Estonia’s recorded history have all occurred: 2010, 2014, 2018, 2021 and 2022. While the last three summers brought shorter heatwaves to Estonia, record-breaking heat has been observed elsewhere in Europe. This year, for example, polar areas in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia exceeded 30˚C on an unprecedented number of days, while Portugal and Spain recorded over 46 °C in June.

‘Why would you take away a parking place?’: the city where anyone can build an urban oasis | Europe | The Guardian

‘Why would you take away a parking place?’: the city where anyone can build an urban oasis | Europe | The Guardian | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it

In a quiet corner of Vienna’s well-to-do 18th district, Jana is explaining how her assembly of wooden decking and planters is bringing a bit of greenery to the area. “There’s not a single tree on this whole street – it’s just parking spaces on both sides.”

This is a grätzloase, or neighbourhood oasis – a miniature park tucked into the side of the road. With the blessing of the city hall, more than 100 of them have sprung up across Vienna. The scheme has been growing since 2015, and its proponents say it’s struck a rare balance for urban projects: cheap, community-driven and appreciated by local people.

Urban rewilding: the subtle art of not doing a f*ck

Urban rewilding: the subtle art of not doing a f*ck | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it
For centuries, humans have tried to tame nature. The result: neatly trimmed parks, orderly gardens, and manicured green spaces. But a shift is underway. Across the world, a new approach to landscape design is gaining ground — one that places nature in control. This emerging design ethos champions wildness, inviting ecosystems to flourish on their own terms. Are we entering the age of rewilding?

A new study on Sweden’s largest sustainable urban development project finds that individual Nature-based solutions (NbS) have minimal impact on local climate, emphasizing the need for large-scale, interconnected green infrastructure for substantial cooling.
The research, carried out in Stockholm Royal Seaport, utilized a network of wireless sensor stations to monitor real-time temperature variations across different types of NbS: forest parks, green courtyards, rain gardens, green roofs, and lawns.

Parks and gardens hold key to cooling overheated cities | Cities | The Guardian | Energy Transition in Europe | www.energy-cities.eu | Scoop.it

Parks, trees, green roofs and gardens are what scientists call nature-based solutions to cooling overheated cities. Then there are the technical solutions, solar panels, heat pumps and other ways of cutting fossil fuel use. But even all these combined are not enough to reach the goal of net zero carbon emissions.
