Google and edX to collaborate on an open-source learning platform and research, among other things EdX, the online-learning partnership founded by MIT and Harvard University, today announced its partnership with Google to, among other things, jointly develop the edX open-source learning platform, Open edX, expanding the platform’s selection of learning tools and worldwide availability. As part of the collaboration with Google, edX plans to build out and operate MOOC.org, a new website that will help educational institutions, businesses and teachers build and host online courses for a global audience. The site — slated to go live next year — will be powered by Open edX and built on Google infrastructure. “We envision that the site will become an ideal way to develop and refine novel online learning experiences,” says Anant Agarwal, president of edX and a professor of electrical engineering and computer science at MIT. “Faculty, for example, new to online learning could get their feet wet, and learners who may not want to take a full course could also just get a taste. Moreover, we will be able to learn how to improve our platform by having more individuals build and use content.”

Even though many of us don't have technology-rich classrooms, the rapidly evolving education landscape increasingly requires us to incorporate technology to customize student learning. Blended learning, with its mix of technology and traditional face-to-face instruction, is a great approach.

Higher education institutions must upgrade their approaches to business management to keep up with the demands of today’s students, who behave more and more like customers.
why [has] technology, to date, had very little impact on improved learning outcomes? This could be because we continue to use technology to reinforce 19th century teaching practice to meet out-dated assessment models. Most of the world’s curriculum and assessment systems are based around fact recall rather than actually demonstrating that you have learned something and can deploy it within a problem-solving situation.

The world’s most innovative companies enjoy a premium on their share price. Holding onto it depends on the flexibility of top-level management to encourage new ideas across the organisation. When you run the world’s leading customer-relationship software firm, you need to think ahead to stay ahead. Salesforce.com Inc.’s Founder and CEO Marc Benioff is proof of this philosophy: it’s this thinking that’s allowed his company to reign number one on our list of the World’s Most Innovative Companies for three consecutive years, with no signs of slowing down. Enlightened corporate leaders like Benioff know the importance of building a company’s creative capabilities beyond themselves. They look far into the future by looking very deeply into the present. They think about real needs, real issues and the problems facing real people. And, as Benioff emphatically put it during a conversation with us, “we’ll take innovation any way you can give it to us.”

The majority of the most expensive programs were based in the Midwest and South. Costs at these schools would likely be even higher for out-of-state students. Like many programs at public schools, online programs can charge different tuition rates for students depending on where they live. Pennsylvania State University—World Campus, the only East Coast-based school on the list, was also the highest ranked among the most expensive schools. The school placed 16th in the U.S. News list of the Best Online Bachelor's Programs. In 2012-2013, Pennsylvania State University—World Campus charged $60,480 for its

Pianist Jonathan Biss expected an audience of 1,000 students for an online course he is teaching this semester on Beethoven’s sonatas. By the time the course went live this morning, 32,000 people from across the world had signed up for the five-week class. The class is a collaboration between Biss’s employer, Philadelphia-based Curtis Institute of Music, and Coursera, the California-based provider of Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs). The number of students enrolled so far is more than seven times the total number of students who have attended Curtis since the music conservatory opened in 1924. While it’s hardly the biggest MOOC ever, this is Beethoven, not banking.

edX and other MOOC providers expand offerings, assess effectiveness, and move toward course credit. HarvardXreported that combined enrollments in all 17 University courses offered through the edX venture with MIT exceeded 500,000 as of mid August, with“Introduction to Computer Programming” (160,000 registrants) and “Justice”(70,000) leading. The Extension School is experimenting by offering its enrolled students the edX versions of three courses for credit. Others can of course register for the edX courses on a noncredit basis. And Harvard College students enrolled in the equivalent campus courses can use the online materials and exercises as virtual“textbooks” and as supplemental learning aids. Even as HarvardX has moved into its new quarters at 125 Mount Auburn Street and continued to augment its staff (adding a chief videographer and a program assistant, and continuing to hire student video assistants and a research programmer), edX has rented much larger offices in Cambridge’s Kendall Square, totaling 30,000 square feet, according to news reports; theCrimson reported that total staffing was expected to be 90 to 100 employees and consultants by the time of the move in January.

Americans are spending more time online, and while total time spent on the Internet via PC dropped 10% to 73% in 2012, more and more of us are making up the difference on our phones, tablets, and even our televisions

Teachers work an average of 50 hours per week, including 12 hours per week on activities they don’t get paid for, like grading papers and advising student clubs. By educating the next generation, teachers are shaping tomorrow’s politicians, business leaders, artists, scientists and doctors.

There’s a lot of quick, cheap testing that can be done to gather information about what will work and what won’t. A new product to come out of one of the Identifying New Business Models MBA module at INSEAD was Knixwear - sweat resistant, absorbent and odour reducing underwear for women, which shows how fundamental and low-cost testing can be. Variants of the idea were explored using data about women post-pregnancy and by surveying the student population. The product was tested on campus using simple simulations such as moistening the prototype and asking students to wear it and judge its comfort level. Another involved getting people to hold the test fabric on their hand and test how dry it felt and for how long.

Every year thousands of low-income students in the U.S. “under-match” in college admission, landing at colleges that are not the strongest academic fit for them. Every year thousands of low-income students in the U.S. “under-match” in college admission, landing at colleges that are not the strongest academic fit for them. Most of these students never even apply to the best colleges they could be admitted to because they have no idea what their college options really are. The stakes could not be higher: Over his or her lifetime, a U.S. college graduate earns nearly $3 million more than someone who has not graduated from college. Students who attend selective colleges are much more likely to graduate. And, because selective colleges tend to offer more substantial scholarship packages, their net cost to students is often lower, and students are able to graduate with less debt.

Catholic colleges and universities don't want to be left behind as other institutions embrace online education, but they want to do it with Catholic values. Many Catholic universities and colleges are planning to begin offering online education programs to take a full advantage of new educational technologies, according to Joan Frawley Desmond of National Catholic Register. Catholic colleges and universities don’t want to be left behind as other institutions advance — and grab market share in an expanding pool of students.

Higher education in the United States is at a tipping point with approximately one in three colleges and universities spending more than they can afford The Law of More needs to be overturned. Universities simply cannot afford to increase costs in nonstrategic areas and take on more debt, if they want to survive. It is imperative that universities become much more focused on creating value from their core. That will require having a clear strategy, streamlined operations, a strong financial foundation, trust and accountability, and a willingness to invest only in innovations that truly create value for the institution. Higher education in the United States is at a tipping point. In its time of need, the leaders of our colleges and universities have a tremendous opportunity to reshape and reinvent an industry that is directly linked to our economic prosperity and the hopes and dreams of millions.

More than 150 colleges and universities got failing scores on an annual test of their financial stability by the U.S. Department of Education in results, released this year, that date from 2011. Several have closed, including Saint Paul’s College in Virginia, Lon Morris College in Texas, Atlantic Union College in Massachusetts, Chester College in New Hampshire, and for-profit Chancellor University in Ohio. A few are in bankruptcy. This trend has been little noticed outside of higher education. And inside higher education, some critics contend, colleges are not reacting to it quickly enough. “Change is needed, and it’s needed now,” the Bain report said. “Still, at the majority of institutions, the pace of change is slower than it needs to be. Plenty of hurdles exist, including the belief that things will return to the way they were. Note: They won’t.”

mLearning has, slowly but surely, been creating a niche for itself in corporate training and learning. Even a decade ago mLearning was being created and utilized for learning – though sparingly. But in the past few years it has emerged as a sustainable learning platform. In addition to providing uninterrupted access, mLearning also provides a more learner-centric approach where the learner can assess his or her own needs and learn accordingly. With emerging technologies, mobile learning development is also becoming streamlined and budget-friendly. But before you take the leap of faith, there are still some points to be pondered. Here are some frequently asked questions to help you make your decision.
