Literably Is An Excellent Reading Site — If Used With Caution | Larry Ferlazzo’s Websites of the Day…

Literably Is An Excellent Reading Site — If Used With Caution | Larry Ferlazzo’s Websites of the Day… | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

Literably "allows students to read a text and have it automatically assessed for accuracy and words-per-minute speed. Plus, and this is what was most surprising to me, it also provides a fairly accurate indentification of student errors — in other words, what word they said instead of the word in the text. You’re able to provide the student or parent a link to the recording. And it’s free."

Beth Dichter's insight:

Thanks for Larry Ferlazzo for sharing this website that allows teachers to choose reading and levels for students to read and saves their reading so you can come back and access it via a dashboard. You will need to register and set-up your student list.

Ferlazzo also discusses the cons of this. There is value in having one-on-one time with students when they read so you determine if they are "racing through words" or having other issues that may not be apparent through a recording.

None the less this may be a great tool for some of your students. Students do have the option of re-recording.

If you’ve got a story to tell, there’s never been a better time to find ways in which to enrich your work with digital storytelling.
Beth Dichter's insight:

After starting with a brief history of storytelling this post provides great resources as it explores digital storytelling in primary and secondary education, for higher education, for business and creative professionals, and storytelling for a new generation.

In the section for primary and secondary education you will find links to great resources at the University of Houston which has a site dedicated to "educational uses of digital storytelling" as well as a site from the National Writing Project that provides many resources.

A number of resources are also available in the section on higher education as well as as the section for business and creative professionals, which also suggests several Web 2.0 tools you might use to tell your story.

Creativity In The Digital Classroom-Over 40 Resources-Are They in Your School?

Creativity In The Digital Classroom-Over 40 Resources-Are They in Your School? | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"I believe that creativity is necessary in today’s classroom. In fact, creativity is one of the important 4 C’s (Critical Thinking, Collaboration, Communication, Creativity) that make up part of the foundation of a 21st century education. The remaining foundation is of course another C (Significant Content). I believe that when you put all of these C’s together you get two more C’s which make up the 'Common Core'."

Beth Dichter's insight:

This post is the first in series and discusses free resources that may be stored on a local computer or a network. The list includes Scratch, Sketc-Up, Gimp, 3 free office suites, Alice, a variety of tools that will help you make movies and more. Most are described in some  detail and there are links to additional resources to help you learn the tool.

Additional posts will discuss Web 2.0 apps that may be used on the Internet (and across platforms), web apps and sites that promote literacy and student publication and web sites that promote student creativity.

Favorite Tech Tools For Social Studies Classes (most are interdisciplinary) | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
How can educators decide which tech to use in the classroom? There are specialists who can help with that.
Beth Dichter's insight:

Finding great tools for your subject area is often time consuming. This post provides links and descriptions of 30 tools. Most are free (but not all). Although geared to social studies most tools would be useful to all teachers and learners. Below is a list of five tools, including several that were new to me.

* Draggo, a free tool that helps you organize websites and is shareable.

* Explee, an easy online video maker. This tool provides a free trial and then requires payment. There is an education plan available..

* Flipsnack allows you to create an online flipbook. You can create a book up to 15 pages in length for free.

* CK-12 Flexbooks allows you to create your own online textbook, or modify ones that exist.

* Kahoot allows you to create interactive quizzes that have a game show quality.

There are many more great tools in this post. Take a few minutes to peruse it and you may find one or two tools to add to your toolbox next year.

So Many Fun Ways To Use Blabberize In The Classroom

So Many Fun Ways To Use Blabberize In The Classroom | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Give any Image a Talking Mouth and Make it an Engaging Learning Opportunity! There are quite a few web 2.0 tools that provide easy and exciting ways to integrate technology in the classroom. One of them is Blabberize, a free online tool that allows you to quickly create talking images, providing some great opportunities to foster student engagement and collaboration."

Beth Dichter's insight:

Have you used Blabberize in your classroom? It is a free tool that allows you to upload an image and then create a talking picture. This post provides may suggestions on how to use it across disciplines as well as a video playlist that will showcase many examples of student work.

Below are a few ideas.

* Research a historical figure and use Blabberize to have them talk about their lives.

* Find a favorite quote from a fictional character and have the character say the quote (and explain it if necessary).

* Think about science and how you could use a talking image to explain an experiment, a change of phase, etc.

* Research an animal and have the animal talk about their habitat, what they eat, etc.

There are many ideas in this post and I suspect you can come up with more. Students need to able to create their own image (or find one that copyright free) and upload the image. It would be best if they wrote out what the image would say and practice it prior to recording using a computer.

The post also discusses how students could collaborate on projects, and notes that if you cannot record with a computer you can record using a phone. Find more information as well as  a link to a video tutorial in the post.

25 Teaching Tools To Organize, Innovate, & Manage Your Classroom

25 Teaching Tools To Organize, Innovate, & Manage Your Classroom | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Over the years, many of us have personally experienced the growth of technology in today’s classrooms. Instead of taking notes, students are now occupied by surfing the Internet, scrolling through Facebook, and messaging their friends on their smart phones, tablets, and laptops. Instead of focusing on the instruction, teachers are constantly required to interrupt class in order to remind those students again and again, that class time is for learning, not texting. However, as today’s students are using more technological devices, it is imperative that teachers have access to the resources to keep pace with the growing tech culture."
