Beth Dichter's insight:

Here is one great visuals and two word lists for vocabulary. The image above is a word wheel that looks at emotions, helping students hone in on other words that may more accurately describe a character.

There is also a Vivid Verb List and one that looks at moods.

Lisa Norris's curator insight, November 4, 2014 9:54 AM

I would have my upper ES grade students add this to their writer's notebook!  Excellent resource to help with continuous vocab growth!

Drora Arussy's curator insight, November 4, 2014 10:44 AM

Such a great simple visual tool. Should be in everyone's bookmark, on your physical wall hanging up, or whatever other means you use. It helps you start thinking a bit about what words you can use and how to use them.

Janet McQueen's curator insight, November 4, 2014 5:38 PM

Great tools for expanding ELLs vocabulary especially useful when writing.

Spell Up: Voice Powered Game - Think Personal Spelling Bee

Spell Up is a new voice-powered game that can help hone your spelling skills. Just speak to play! chrome.com/spellup
Beth Dichter's insight:

Spell Up is a new Chrome experiment, a game designed for Chrome that allows you to use your voice to spell words, letter by letter. But be prepared, as you spell words you build a tower, and the higher the tower the more difficult the word. One mistake and your tower falls. If you have Chrome check out this free game. Here is a new way for students to practice their spelling and have fun.

This will also work on your Android and a version is available for the iPad and iPhone but you must type the words. To go directly to Spell Up https://spellup.withgoogle.com/

Technically Speaking - The New & the Outdated (Infographic) | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Beth Dichter's insight:

As technology moves along words that were once part of the lexicon may become endangered as new technology takes over. How many students know what a floppy disk is or have 'dialed' a phone? This infographic has looked at vocabulary and places words in the following categories:

* Endangered words

* Words with updated meanings

* Social media and messaging

* Tech terminology of the future

Check out the poster and see if you agree or disagree with the choices. What would your students think? Are there words they would add or delete? This could become a fun activity and perhaps you could create your own infographic.

My Middle Schoolers Actually LOVE Our Unit Overview Sheets! | transformED | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

Quoting from the post:

I mean, when was the last time you stumbled across a middle schooler who LOVED -- all caps on purpose -- ANY handout that had to do with school?

But it's true: My students -- who I surveyed last week in an attempt to gather some feedback about the unit overview sheets that my learning team developed together -- really dig the tool that we're using to give them opportunities to reflect on what they're learning.

Beth Dichter's insight:

Bill Ferriter suggests a different way to share objectives with students through the use of an Overview Sheet. What is an Overview Sheet. Ferriter states it is a  "one-page handout that includes a list of every objective that students need to master written in student-friendly language.  The handout also includes unit vocabulary and a few essential questions designed to spark thinking and start conversations."

An example of one is provided in the post (which you may download and you see part of in the image) as is a download where he shares students thoughts on self assessments. This may be something you would like to try with your students.

Sue Ann's curator insight, May 29, 2013 4:13 PM

I loved the Unit Overview sheets, and how students rate their mastery of the objectives.

LeeAnn LaSota's curator insight, July 20, 2014 9:06 PM

This may not be tech, but it fits perfectly for the new interactive text books!

Best Websites for Teaching & Learning 2014

Best Websites for Teaching & Learning 2014 | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"The 2014 Best Websites for Teaching & Learning foster the qualities of innovation, creativity, active participation, and collaboration. They are free, Web-based sites that are user friendly and encourage a community of learners to explore and discover."

Beth Dichter's insight:

Yesterday I posted the top choices from the American Association of School LIbrarians (AASL) on the best apps for 2014. Today they listed the top websites in the following categories:

* Media Sharing

* Digital Stories

* Manage & Organize

* Social Networking & Communication

* Content Resources

* Curriculum Collaboration

As you review the websites you will find one or more standards that are addressed by the websites.

Although I know many of the websites, there are some that are new to me that I look forward to exploring. Below are several that I have used and really like, or are ones I have checked out and will be using in the future.

Are you looking for new tools and want ideas on how to use them as well as examples and links to learn more about the tool. Check out Remix-t, a site from the University of Notre Dame, that is chock full of great ideas and resources. Although this site is geared to college teachers the resources and examples will provide you with great ideas and you will be able to modify them for your classroom. You will find in under Content Resources.

Mixed Ink is a new site to me. It allows you to create a group of students who will write together. They may comment and evaluate the submissions and each students' writing will show up in a different color. This looks like  a great site, esp. for schools that are not using Google apps.

There are many more that I will be exploring. Do you have a favorite website? Share them in the comment section and let us know why it is a favorite of yours.

21 Digital Tools to Build Vocabulary (Infographic)

21 Digital Tools to Build Vocabulary (Infographic) | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
I previously published 21 Digital Tools to Build Vocabulary which has been widely read and quite popular with educators.
Beth Dichter's insight:

This infographic provides 21 digital tools that help build vocabulary. It is split into the following sections:

* Reference Tools

* Word Clouds
* Games and Reviews

* Word Walls and More

Why use digital tools?  Here are a few reasons (and there are many more). They allow students to hear spoken words; often words are acccompanied with images, providing a deeper understanding; students may play and manipulate words; and create virtual word walls. We are told to personalize instruction today and digital tools help us do that. Teaching vocabulary is critical and these tools will provide you with resources for a range of students. For more information on the tools you might look at the original post located at http://www.learningunlimitedllc.com/2013/02/20-digital-tools-for-vocabulary/

The Early-Literacy Shift: New Words, New Media, New Friends

The Early-Literacy Shift: New Words, New Media, New Friends | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Literacy is changing. It really is. Even in my grade one classroom as the students begin to learn their letters and sounds, as they start to put those letters and sounds together into words, and as they take their first hesitant steps to read and write —literacy is changing.

The change in our classroom was subtle at first. When my students began writing the word we with two i’s, I smiled and talked about the more traditional spelling of the word. When students came to school with a clear understanding of what it meant to get to the next level or to have several lives, I took notice of the new vocabulary they had."

Beth Dichter's insight:

Putting young students together with technology creates a win-win situation in this classroom. Learn how one teacher has her students writing in blogs to share their work, using twitter, learning vocabulary (such as pingback) and much more. This post is complete with a video where students provide definitions of words and share how they use technology in their classroom.

21 Literacy Resources For The Digital Teacher

21 Literacy Resources For The Digital Teacher | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Beth Dichter's insight:

The digital tools listed in this post are focused on vocabulary instruction, a key concern given the Common Core State Standards. Vocabulary comes into play when we look at reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students need to have a broad vocabulary, and we can support this through both direct and indirect instruction. This post provides links to online tools in the areas of:

* Reference Tools

* Word Clouds

* Games and Reviews
* Word Walls and Virtual Field Trips

The post states:

Digital tools allows students to:

* hear pronunciations;

* read words in a variety of authentic examples;

* view photos and images related to words;

* reinforce word learning through interactive games;

* play with and manipulate language;

* discover rhyming words; and

* collaborate with classmates to create virtual words walls.

Consider checking out this post and providing time for students to explore some of these tools in and outside the classroom.

Vocabulary Instructional Strategies: Marzano's 6-Step Process

Vocabulary Instructional Strategies: Marzano's 6-Step Process | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Effective vocabulary instruction is a key foundation to helping students acquire a wide and diverse vocabulary. Students need both direct and indirect instruction in vocabulary and word meanings as well as multiple exposures to words. It is through multiple exposures and repetition that students begin to understand the nuances of words and how to use them when speaking and writing."
