Education 3.0: Altering Round Peg in Round Hole Education

Education 3.0: Altering Round Peg in Round Hole Education | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"What follows is my Ignite talk for ISTE 2013.  It was rejected by the selection committee.  As I already conceptualized the talk and think it is such an important topic, I am disseminating my text and slides via my blog and Slideshare.  First, Education 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 are described.  Later, I discuss the consequences of Education 1.0 vs Education 3.0 on learners (and educators!) especially those that do not fit the mold of Education 1.0."

Beth Dichter's insight:

Thanks go to Jackie Gerstein for sharing this presentation so we may learn more about the shift from Education 1.0 to Education 2.0 to Education 3.0. The slides are available on her blog as well as a link to Slideshare. Additional links to information are available as you read through the text in the post.

The website will allow students to (quoting from the Rocket21 website):

* Connect with experts from a wide range of professions

If you work with tweens this site is worth checking out. There are links applicable to members (as in students), educators and parents. If a child is under 13 the parent must confirm their registration.

Is Social Media Making Us Socially Awkward (Infographic)

Is Social Media Making Us Socially Awkward (Infographic) | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Some of us are on a mission to see how many friends we can acquire on Facebook or followers we can grab on Twitter. You can't help but wonder: Are we so busy making new friends and spending time with them online that we are failing to nurture real-world friendships the old fashioned way? Is how we socialize online eroding our real-life relationships? Or maybe just changing them?"

Grom Social: Why An 11-Year-Old Built His Own Social Network

Grom Social: Why An 11-Year-Old Built His Own Social Network | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
This 11-year-old could not find a good enough Facebook alternative so he decided to build his own social network, Grom Social.
Beth Dichter's insight:

This is a pretty amazing site, created by an 11 year old as a safe social site for children. This post from provides a great overview, but perhaps the word of the founder says it the best...

"I have been building my site since Nov. 2011. I spend lots of time drawing new graphics, researching new games, fun facts, cool kids books, cool videos, nutrition tips and highlighting the best young up and coming athletes. It is coming along well.  Kids seem to like my site, especially the Grom Helpers and the games. I am excited to watch it grow. I am proud of my efforts in making my idea a reality." Beyond The LMS – Lore The Next-Gen Social Network For Education

Beyond The LMS – Lore The Next-Gen Social Network For Education | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

There are so many Learning Management Systems available, and Lore in one of them. Originally known as Coursekit, it has been redesigned and is getting great reviews.

The website states: "With best-in-class teaching and discussion tools, Lore turns your class into an online community. By signing up, you’re joining the largest network of instructors and students in the world. Learn more."

Alberto Rivera's curator insight, June 5, 2022 4:14 AM
In times when content has become a commodity the thing that sets one platform or service apart from the other is the ability to build context around the content. In the case of Lore, this context is community. This community starts with the instructor and the students of a particular course but does not end there. Like on Facebook students have the ability to talk to and interact with each other outside of their course or school.
