6 Reading Comprehension Problems and What to do About Them

6 Reading Comprehension Problems and What to do About Them | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"High school history has a tremendous obstacle to learning — getting students enthusiastic about reading difficult texts. When I teach World History to my 9th graders, I have come up with a list of 6 common challenges I face when trying teach reading comprehension. Here’s a glimpse into how I meet these 6 challenges and help my students win!"

Beth Dichter's insight:

Vicki Davis shares her insights in working with students on informational text, specifically in history (but applicable to other subjects).

The infographic located in this posts looks at six challenges that students may face, and provides insights that you may use to meet them with your students.They six challenges are listed below, with additional detail found in the post.

1. Did the student read the text?

2. Did the student comprehend the text?

3. Where does the student struggle?

4. How can you give meaningful feedback to the students?

5. How can you get meaningful data to help your whole class?

6. How do I align this with standards?

Then Davis raises an important question: "So now, how do we meet these challenges and teach nonfiction text, put questions in the text, improve the questions, personalize learning AND align with standards?"

She provides the answer by introducing a website that is new to me, Actively Learn. Davis provides a great review of the site and shares what she sees and pros and cons. There is a freemium version and a paid version, so you may choose to try it out and see how it works.

A look at how PBS LearningMedia's "vast selection of rich digital media resources provides a great opportunity for blended learning that can engage students with compelling content, and directly align curriclum to the new standars."

This post looks at the four central components in the Common Core State Standards (English Language Arts and Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects) and suggests examples of media found in the PBS Learning Media materials that may be used to address the standards. Specifically it addresses the following:

* Emphasisis on informational text

* The focus on argument

* The push for media literacy

* Encouraging online collaboration and exchange of ideas

Many great suggestions are provided within each of the areas listed above.

National Geographic Young Explorer (Student Magazine)

National Geographic Young Explorer (Student Magazine) | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Beth Dichter's insight:

If you work with younger students and you have access to digital devices that access the Internet head over to National Geographic Young Explorer. You will find issues from October 2009 through April 2014. The great thing about these magazines is that the student may have the text read to them, and each word is highlighted as it is read. The site also states that it continues to add new magazines during the school year, so more should be coming soon.

Along with the Listen and Read feature, there are two Teacher Guides for each issue that you may print out. One guide is for Kindergarten and the other is for first grade. The guides include lesson plans, discussion questions, ready-to-copy worksheets and more." There is also a projectable issue available that you may use to present the information to your class as a whole.

This is a great resource to introduce students to science and to informational text (as required by Common Core). For teachers of young students who may not have a science background this website will provide you with a wealth of resources. Have fun sharing this with students and their families.
