Get into the Flow in your Classrooom

Get into the Flow in your Classrooom | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
There is an experience that happens in many of my classes... Students get so enthralled in what they are doing that time disappears and learning transpires. I often wondered how this happened and h...
Beth Dichter's insight:

What does it take to have 'flow' in your classroom, to have students so involved in the task that they do not want to leave? Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi gave a TEDtalk about flow and Mia MacMeekin has taken the key concepts and shared thism in this visual.

Learn about flow by reviewing this infographic, which provides six concepts to that will help you get into the flow as well as definitions for some of these concepts and 8 major components of enjoyment (which is one of the concepts). Learn more about flow by listening to the TEDtalk.

Universal Design for Learning and the Myth of Average

Universal Design for Learning and the Myth of Average | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"I don't know about you, but I love TED talks. (TED = Technology, Entertainment, Design.) Although I have known about and preached Universal Design for Learning (UDL) since I began this blog, I could have never explain it as well as Todd Rose did in his TED Talk, "The Myth of Average". Thank you, Todd, for providing this concept so beautifully. (This is 18 minutes, but worth every one!)"

Beth Dichter's insight:

This post discusses Universal Design for Learning (UDL), a tool that is helpful to know about since the Common Core requires that we need to ""provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them." In addition it provides access to a TEDTalk by Todd Rose, where he discusses "The Myth of Average", a talk that will make you re-think how you view your students (and ask yourself "What is average when it comes to my students?").

In addition Glenda Hampton Anderson provides an excellent overview of UDL, perfect for someone new to these concepts or as a review. Many links are included which provide access to some of the best sites for materials on Universal Design for Learning.

Our #alcpqp group is loving TED talks. Here is one about Universal Design that will help us all get acquainted!

Top 5 TEDxTeen Talks

Top 5 TEDxTeen Talks | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Not every teenager sits around, texting endlessly and at all the wrong times, causing their parents to worry about a possible addiction to technology. Some of them give TED talks in their spare time.

How will we talk about feminism? What does it mean to "fail," and why shouldn't we fail better? What is love? Why isn't America investing in young black men? And are the people who create change the silent supporters rather than the vocal leaders? In this curated selection of TEDxTeen Talks, the adolescent version of the adult TED Talks, five teens discuss these ideas and how they collide with their own stories."

Is the Educational Revolution About Videos: Ted-Ed and Khan Academy?

Is the Educational Revolution About Videos: Ted-Ed and Khan Academy? | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Khan Academy and the new Ted-Ed website are being touted to create an educational revolution. What I am concerned about is the underlying pedagogy of Ted-Ed and Khan Academy. I love listening to a good talk and talking about it afterwards, but does it change my thoughts and/or behavior? Typically not. Grant Wiggins’ recent post, 'Everything you know about curriculum may be wrong. Really' discusses this point:

The point of learning is not just to know things but to be a different person – more mature, more wise, more self-disciplined, more effective, and more productive in the broadest sense."

So one question to consider, are the videos the core of instruction, or are teachers (live and in person) the core? Gernstein provides many resources in this article and raises many interesting points as this question is explored.

The Flipped Classroom Model: A Full Picture

The Flipped Classroom Model: A Full Picture | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

This post explores the flipped classroom providing a wide range of resources - links to many articles, videos, and images (including a SlideShare)that helps to gain a better understanding of a flipped classroom. Gerstein's summary states: "The Flipped Classroom offers a great use of technology - especially if it gets lecture out of the classrooms and into the hands and control of the learners. As it is being discussed, it is part of a larger picture of teaching and learning. The Flipped Classroom videos have a place in the models and cycles of learning proposed by educational psychologists and instructional designers. Providing educators with a full framework of how the Flipped Classroom can be used in their educational settings will increase its validity for educators and their administrators."

The Fischbowl: Don't Fear Failure

The Fischbowl: Don't Fear Failure | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"One of the problems I think we have in schools is that we train students to fear failure, to avoid it at all costs. Now, to be clear, I'm not suggesting you go out and fail all your classes. But I am suggesting that you should take some risks in your learning. That instead of avoiding things that are hard (because you might fail), you challenge yourself to step up and take on things that are difficult."

This also includes a TEDtalk by Myshkin Ingawale. The site states "The important point to realize is that he built this device - and it failed. So then he built it 32 more times until it worked."
