"Planning for Earth Day 2014 is well underway around the world. Bring environmental issues to your classroom with resources from PBS LearningMedia. Highlights include an animated video from Loop Scoop using orange juice consumption to teach about biodegradation, a lesson tracking waste in neighborhoods from America Revealed, and a QUEST video transporting viewers to the beginning of the environmental movement."

If you are looking for some great resources to help your students learn more about the environment this list of 22 interactive lessons may be right up your alley. The lesson plans are for students as young as Kindergarten up through Grade 12. All are from PBS and all come with materials to use in conjunction with the interactive activities. PBS does require that you create a user name after you access two items but you may also create and save items in a favorite files for future use.

PBS provides many resources that help students learn the design process, and this post provides a short description. There are projects for students in grades K-1 up through high school and beyond. Below are names of a few of the projects.

* Designing a Wheelchair for Rugby - use to launch a design project in your classroom

* Scientist Profile: Inventor - have your student meet a teen scientist and see what he invented...and have them design their own invention

* A House for Teddy Bear - Watch young users use problem solving skills and trial and error as they create a house...and try it in your classroom.

Although most teachers have access to computers in their classes, only one in five say they have the right level of technology, according to a recent PBS national survey of teachers grades pre-K-12.

Limited budgets were cited as the biggest barrier to accessing technology, according to 63 percent of teachers.

Did you know that PBS has a portal for students? It provides resources for art, math, science, social studies, language arts, health, and NOVA Labs.

You will need to create a teacher account (click on this link to get to that page: http://www.pbslearningmedia.org/

You will need to click on LogIn (upper right hand corner) and will be given the option of creating a new account.

There are several tools offered to help make life easier for teachers. You will find a Lesson Plan Builder, a Quiz Creator and StoryBoard tools.

You can then create accounts for your students. The site will give them access to your material as well as additional resources. You will find over 700 resources in Spanish.

PBS provides access to many great programs. This site may be useful for projects or specific units.

If you are looking for websites that provides video resources in the area of social studies check out this post. Richard Byrne provides a list of ten websites, stating "As a Social Studies teacher, I have used all but one of these sources in my classroom at least once and most of them I've used multiple times."

The list includes:

* Hip Hop Videos - "a series of short, upbeat lectures on topics in US History and World History."

* PBS Video - high quality documentaries.

* History for Music Lovers "is a great place to find music videos about dozens of topics in World History."

Has a list of 10 resource sites for students and teachers that include educational videos, interactive displays, documents, and documentaries related to social studies and the best part this is all free.  This allows teachers, students, and parents to use these resources to get a better understanding about social studies.

Watch Us Surprise You: Join us this Spring (February 27 to March 30, 2012) for the first ever PBS Online Film Festival. For five weeks we'll premiere four short films from our producing partners.
This week film festival hosts Patrick Epino and Stephen Dypiangco introduce four real stories; meet one of the last seltzer bottlers, a record collector, rooftop dwellers and an Iraq war veteran (Feb. 27). Week 2 (March 5) is a compelling collection of shorts, filmmakers tackle coming-of-age stories from the perspective of teens who are dealing with bullies, navigating their sexual and ethnic identities, and learning what it means to be a man. The following weeks will focus on Girl Power, Who We Are?, and Offbeat.
