Coursera makes first foray into K-12 education with online courses for teachers

Coursera makes first foray into K-12 education with online courses for teachers | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it
Online learning startup Coursera is partnering with several schools of education, as well as other institutions and museums, to bring professional development courses to K-12 teachers online.
Beth Dichter's insight:

Coursera plans to bring MOOC courses to K-12 teachers. The will be partnering with "several schools of education and other institutions and museums, including schools of education at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Virginia, the American Museum of Natural History and the Museum of Modern Art, to bring free professional development courses to teachers via the web."

Coursera is designed with a peer-grading approach.This would allow teachers to receive feedback from other teachers. The courses will be free but there will also be a Signature Track Option that would allow teachers to pay a small fee which will allow them to receive a certificate.The goal is for this to be recognized as continuing education credit.
There is additional information in the post.

These are great courses and I am excited to see what else they will add.  Awesome opportunities for teachers.

If you are looking for a list of locations to locate open course materials check out this post. After discussing Massive Online Open Course (as in MOOC) they post turns to Top Universities and Program - sharing some of the leading platforms today as well as partnerships with other universities and colleges.

It then goes on to share sources for open content:

* Libraries and Archives

* Databases and Search Engines

* Podcasts and Lectures

* Subscription Services

Chances are you may find a link or two (or more) to some open course materials you have not seen in the past.

Unfortunately (and not addressed in this post) a number of sites have posted that Flat World Knowledge will not be offering free textbooks beginning in January 2013. They were one of the first sites to offer open education resources. It appears that venture capital has come into play and may be a reason for this shift.

Online Classes Invite Students to Join the Ivy League, Kind Of

Online Classes Invite Students to Join the Ivy League, Kind Of | Eclectic Technology | Scoop.it

"Earlier this month, education bigwigs Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology entered what New York Times Reporter Tamar Lewin referred to as an “academic Battle of the Titans,” after announcing their newest partnership, edX, which allows people all over the world to take free online courses offered by both universities."
This article looks at two issues "What is the value?" and “A Moral Obligation" referring to the article that was published in the New York Times 'Room for Debate" that discussed this issue. One quote from the article:
"It is a moral obligation to educate the billions of people in this world who are intellectually starved through no fault of their own."
Will this partnership change the way we view higher education? Will taking online courses provide the same education that one would receive attending in person?
