PEMBROKE TOWNSHIP, Ill. — While the national dialogue continues on racism and representation, there is a renewed push to help Black farmers flourish.

There are more than 70,000 farms in Illinois, but USDA DATA shows less than 200 principal operators are Black.

“We can’t have equity without the land,” Fred Carter, co-founder and executive director of the Black Oaks Center, said.

In 2009, Carter and his wife Dr. Jifunza Wright-Carter left their Beverly bungalow in Chicago and moved their family to Pembroke Township to carve out a low-carbon existence on 40 acres of land.

“Black farming is in what I call the intensive care unit,” Wright-Carter, co-founder and president of Black Oaks Center, said. “It’s in the process of being resuscitated.”

Five billion dollars in debt relief and support for socially disadvantaged farmers was included in President Joe Biden’s Covid-19 economic relief package.

In Illinois, a study on farm ownership disparities will be completed by the end of the year. Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton’s team will be looking at those results as they work on a two-year strategic plan to address equity in agriculture.

Ex-Trump aide Stephen Miller's legal group sues Biden administration, alleging racism against white farmers

Ex-Trump aide Stephen Miller's legal group sues Biden administration, alleging racism against white farmers | Diverse Books and Media | Scoop.it

Miller, the architect of the Trump administration's hard-line immigration policies, cited Martin Luther King Jr. in a statement announcing the suit.

Former Trump aide Stephen Miller's legal group sued the Biden administration, alleging a program to help socially disadvantaged farmers is discriminatory

Valsadie's insight:

"We hold fast to the immortal words of Martin Luther King Jr. that Americans 'should not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character,'” Miller, the architect of former President Donald Trump's anti-immigration and child separation policies, said in a statement Wednesday announcing the legal action.

NOTE - The ACTUAL quote from Martin Luther King:

"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today."

https://www.npr.org/2010/01/18/122701268/i-have-a-dream-speech-in-its-entirety

. . .

The Post, citing USDA data, reported that only 45,000 of the country's 3.4 million farmers are Black, down from 1 million a century ago.

A study by the nonprofit activist organization Environmental Working Group earlier this year found that of the $9.2 billion in bailout money set aside for farmers through October of last year by the USDA, almost 97 percent went to white farmers. It also showed that white farmers were paid roughly four times more than Black farmers. The numbers for the $28 billion in aid payments to farmers during Trump's trade war with China were even starker, with 99 percent of the money going to white farmers, according to the group.

In 1936, MacNolia Cox, a 13-year-old girl from Akron, Ohio, made it to the final round of the National Spelling Bee.

She was the first Black student to get that far, but she was forced to sit in the back of the train that took her to Washington, she and her mother were not allowed to eat with the other spellers or their parents, and they had to take the stairs, instead of an elevator, to get to a pre-contest banquet, Mabel Norris, a reporter who wrote about MacNolia’s trip to the bee, recalled in a 1971 article she wrote in The Akron Beacon Journal.

Sha'Carri Richardson powers to women's 100m win at 2021 USATF Golden Games | NBC Sports
https://www.youtube.com/nbcsports
Valsadie's insight:
JULY 6 2021:  Here's a timeline of how Sha'Carri Richardson's campaign for the 2021 Summer Olympics ended

It is now official. Sha'Carri Richardson will not travel to Tokyo for the 2021 Summer Olympics.

Richardson's name was missing from the 130-person roster USA Track and Field released on Tuesday. This ended any chance Richardson, 21, had of racing in Tokyo after she tested positive for marijuana at the U.S. trials. Her 30-day suspension would have ended before the start of the relays on Aug. 5, which allowed the possibility she could be part of the team.

That, now, won't be happening.

In a statement, referring to Richardson stating that she smoked marijuana to cope with the death of her birth mother, USATF said it was "incredibly sympathetic toward Sha'Carri Richardson's extenuating circumstances" and "fully agrees" that international rules regarding marijuana should be reevaluated.
