This paper is chock full of complex systems insights for health care. For example:
- In workgroup competition, the
objective is to be a top performer according to carefully designed metrics that measure both cost and quality.
- The interplay between multiple causes of a single
condition, or multiple aspects of its treatment, makes it difficult for the separated specialists to address such complex problems.
- The current design
of the US healthcare system involves the use of “gatekeepers” who serve to route individuals to the care they need. Evidence suggests that this task has become the rate limiting step.

We’re more fooled by noise than ever before, and it’s because of a nasty phenomenon called “big data”. Big data may mean more information, but it also means more false information.
An important article by Nassim Taleb. Some highlights:
Big data may mean more information, but it also means more false information.Researchers are antifragile at the expense of others: they get the "upside" and truth gets the "downside"In large data sets, large deviations are attributable to noise rather than signal|

The online education startup Udacity has announced a new data science degree track program that will allow anyone with basic computer science skills to get an education in data science by the companies that helped pioneer the field.
Started by my coauthor on _Learning to Learn_, Sebastian Thrun, Udacity is wonderful. Great to hear about their focus on data science.

With the help of volunteer data scientists, the rights organization is analyzing 30 years of records.
The program, which volunteers built over the course of a weekend, combed through Amnesty’s 30-year log of “urgent action” calls, or incidents the organization predicts could result in greater human rights violations without intervention.
Who wants to help me add decisions to this data?

Burned once by groupthink, Kennedy came up with a process to root it out.
JFK was a decision making expert.
"
Each participant should function as a “skeptical generalist,” focusing on the problem as a whole rather than approaching it from his or her department’s standpoint. To stimulate freewheeling discussions, the group should use informal settings, with no formal agenda and protocol, so as to avoid the status-laden meetings in the White House. The team should be broken into sub-groups that would work on alternatives and then reconvene. The team should sometimes meet without Kennedy present, so as to avoid people simply following his views."

Cynicism slowing down decision making process: RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan
Economic Times
"With no upside to making decisions, it is no wonder that decision making has slowed.
"Referring to five pillars of the financial sector policy of the central bank, Rajan said in the next few weeks measures will be announced to incentivise banks for early detection of bad loans and better resolution and fair recovery of non-performing assets. "

Predictive analytics uses the past as a proxy for the future. Our tendency to do this is baked in to our thinking. Yet if the environment changes, it's no longer true, and we can suffer "stuck" thinking that isn't adaptive nor responsive to the environment.
