Stop The Diabetic Binge

Stop The Diabetic Binge | Daily realities of diabetic patients | Scoop.it
Trying to stop a diabetic binge is like trying to keep your hand on a hot stove—it’s very difficult and against your natural instinct. Our body’s natural instinct is to withdraw the hand when we feel the heat; your body’s natural instinct when your blood sugar is low is to eat. Therefore, if your blood sugars remain low even after you eat the brain gets hijacked. As discussed in my previous blog “The Diabetic Binge.”

Kirsten was failing school, on the verge of being held back, not checking her blood sugar or taking her insulin consistently, and contemplating suicide. Kristen had Oppositional Defiant Disorder, a psychological condition marked by extreme unwillingness to follow rules or listen to authority figures.

Managing Attention Disorders and Diabetes? | Daily realities of diabetic patients | Scoop.it
It’s five past nine, and you’re late for work again. Clearing a space among piles of accumulating paper, you begin gathering the things you’ll need for the day: briefcase, keys, lunch...you check the clock. Time to check your blood sugar. You haven’t checked your blood sugar, and you’ve left your Humalog pen on the kitchen counter.

▶ The emotional impact of diabetes - short drama piece

This was the first piece we did to get everyone used to filming. As one of our girls said, 'It looks like we are on Hollyoaks!' It is a drama piece about the impact of the diabetes diagnosis. This was made during a week long series of workshops where the teenagers worked on their own and with a professional film maker to explore and share all aspects of their condition and self management. They were all very impressive in their grasp of what is a very complex illness to manage and I too learn a lot. Deb Snow organiser, Type 1 18 years
